You might notice things are looking a bit different today. We’ve given Mumsnet a colour refresh, based on feedback from you in our surveys (thank you!).

We’ve also moved a couple of things around to reduce clutter and make things easier to find:

  • Watch now sits under the OP post
  • Report has moved into the meatball menu (the three dots on posts)

As ever, we’d love to hear what you think, so please share your feedback below.

@LizzyMumsnet Can you notify those of us who can no longer use the current display if/when things are changed back so we can use again?

padronpepper · 19/09/2025 08:20

@LizzyMumsnet
We can no longer see the name of the poster whose posts you have deleted within a thread.

IsadoraQuagmire · 19/09/2025 08:25

@LizzyMumsnet I hope someone will actually pay attention to this thread. So many people, including me, are finding that the bright harsh blue is hurting their eyes and giving them a headache (I get migraines, and I'm experiencing this, also looking at the site now is making me nauseous) I've logged on again today to see if anything has changed and it's pretty much unbearable to look at, so I won't be back unless it's modified.

TheNinthLockUnlocked · 19/09/2025 08:26

The more I use this, the more cross I get. I do NOT need a big banner announcing ORIGINAL POSTER. and MY POST. I have been using MN quite capably since 2006, as have thousands of others.
We are not idiots.
This is dumbing down at its finest and it is a bit embarrassing!

Totally agree. I cannot even fathom what sort of fool needs their own posts highlighting in this childish and visually intrusive way! Everybody has had the option to set highlight colours for absolutely ages, so there's no helping those who chose not to!

And as for hiding the name and time on deleted posts, that is just so infuriating. I like to know who the cunts are, thanks. And also I like to know if I've been the cunt 😬 or will a deleted post of mine still say MY POSTS at the top in hot pink??

Spanador · 19/09/2025 08:28

I'm another one who hates it. I wear glasses and am finding it really hard to look at, it's giving me a headache and I've only been looking for 5 minutes. This along with the constant moving ads and glitches is making the site unusable

Lisyo · 19/09/2025 08:29

I actually like the new colour changes tbh, but I hate the MY POST giant font and as others have said that the username of the deleted post now disappears.

Madformaltesers · 19/09/2025 08:31

how were the participants for the survey about these changes chosen? @LizzyMumsnet and what was the results /percentages ratio etc

Considering the overwhelmingly negative response on this thread, I'm not actually sure this survey exists.

From what I can see, no one has claimed to have taken it, and surely some of the glaring issues would have been identified prior to rolling it out site wide.

Offthecorporateratrace · 19/09/2025 08:40

Between these hideous changes and the bloody annoying pop up ads which mean you can’t read anything it’s becoming unusable. I don’t know what they surveyed but they either didn’t ask the right things, didn’t ask enough people or interpreted the results shockingly badly.

Hoardasurass · 19/09/2025 08:47

Hobnobswantshernameback · 19/09/2025 06:23

Ahh yes
hiding the report button and removing the posters name from deleted posts
talk about making this place an even bigger trolls paradise
but hey so long as the clicks keep happening and the cash keeps coming.....

Thing is if they don't fix this update by reverting to the old colour scheme and brightness @mnhq aren't going to get the clicks. Instead they are alienating all their regular users and were ging to stop using this site. I for 1 will spend no more than a couple of minutes on this site daily to check if they've fixed it for tge next week and if not I'll be closing my account and I'm sure that I won't be the only one

Boiledbeetle · 19/09/2025 08:48

After last night's Mumsnet induced migraine, I have put on a pair of sunglasses and ensured the settings for everything are set to so dark I can hardly see what's on a page

Then I click on Mumsnet..

A few updates to Mumsnet 🎨
Farkinhell · 19/09/2025 08:50

I don't use the app - are these changes there too does anyone know? I'd rather not have it but if it means I can use Mumsnet without squinting I'll give it a go. Weirdly last night it was auto scrolling for a while (android) which was alarming!

GandTtwice · 19/09/2025 08:56

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 18/09/2025 15:38

The colours for the OP and me (blue and green) are too wish washy and not distinct. I sometimes want to scroll quickly until I get to the next post by OP and it’s too similar to the white that everyone else is.

I agree with this and came on this thread to see if anyone else was having this same issue. The background is too bright but the highlight colours too pale.
I can't see why they've changed something that wasn't a problem in the first place

The brighter blue and the brighter background reduce the contrast of the white text, and I'd have thought make the site less accessible to those with visual impairments.

That's not my issue - I just hate it - but seems bad from a technical perspective as well.

LindorDoubleChoc · 19/09/2025 09:14

Also, the anonymity for posters who break Talk Guidelines is really concerning. Wtf? And wasn't mentioned in the "here are the updates" opening post.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/09/2025 09:17

I agree with others that I want to know if a poster has been deleted on a thread already. I don’t want to engage with someone who is obviously stirring up issues.

Who exactly did you survey? Can we see what options / questions were put to them?

Ficklebricks · 19/09/2025 09:25

Even dark mode is burning my eyes, I have to turn my phone brightness down just for this website then when I navigate away to Reddit or the BBC I can't read the pages because my system settings are now too dark for the rest of the web!

If your dark mode is actually making people squint then you've done something wrong Mumsnet!

Agree with @LindorDoubleChoc and @ChazsBrilliantAttitude

@LizzyMumsnet MN seems to be infantilising users yet again.
Bit of Big Brother creeping in.
Can't pick colours, can't see posters who break guidelines, can't see whose threads deleted on an anonymous site.
Big unwanted banner highlighting OP-which could be potentially problematic
MN seems to be controlling so much.

This "survey" which I assume was taken in MN canteen at lunch is completely at odds with what the users want but there is never any direct reply to concerns of the users.

I think you need to go back to why MN was so popular in the early days instead of these changes-which I assume are necessary for the contractors to get paid.

You have really missed the mark here. So much dissatisfaction...

It's bloody awful

Are you saying that a vast majority of posters didn't like the old colours?

These are hideous.

And the colours showed who was posting, We don't need a label

padronpepper · 19/09/2025 09:34

It's just like the infinite scrolling 'test group' of a few months ago. Took ages to sort that out.

Agree. This will be a gift to posters who are, shall we say, not genuine.

Well, I really like it!!!

The nay-sayers just need to reframe it as Farrow & Ball "Borrowed Light" and "Pink Ground" ... and rejoice that the colours have an extraordinary response to screen settings 😁

Edited

Ah yes, Farrow and Ball, a triumph of marketing over quality. Well yes...

Once again, significant changes are made without considering the impact on users with disabilities/access software.

Being able to customise the highlight colours helps a number of visual impairments - that is now not available in dark mode and the range available in “normal” mode is not helpful for most visual impairments. The default “too bright” is also unhelpful.

I’d be interested to know how many users with a range of visual impairments were surveyed and the testing/design that was done to accommodate visual impairments.

LizzyMumsnet · 18/09/2025 16:30

Hi all,

Thanks so much to everyone who’s taken the time to share feedback on the recent updates, we’re working our way through your comments!

A couple of quick updates:

  • If you’d prefer a different look, you can customise colours under Settings > Talk settings. From there, you can choose how your own posts and threads by author are displayed.
  • We’ll also be adding the Watch button back to the bottom of the page shortly.

Who chose the colours?

And if anyone thinks this is magenta they need to get their eyes tested
