You might notice things are looking a bit different today. We’ve given Mumsnet a colour refresh, based on feedback from you in our surveys (thank you!).

We’ve also moved a couple of things around to reduce clutter and make things easier to find:

  • Watch now sits under the OP post
  • Report has moved into the meatball menu (the three dots on posts)

As ever, we’d love to hear what you think, so please share your feedback below.

came back in the light of day, had to change my brightness back to the usual it keep it at, then turn Dark Reader BACK ON just to browse on here.

@LizzyMumsnet it is TOO BRIGHT.

Can we please have some explanations on this change.. and put it back, its awful, not user friendly, not accessibility friendly, and certain not sensory friendly.

Helleofabore · 19/09/2025 09:38

I mentioned the deleted / withdrawn posts yesterday afternoon on this thread but so far no one from MNHQ has replied about why this has been done.

It is a concern that you don’t know if it is you who has been deleted or who else. And it then also removes context.

NebulousSadTimes · 19/09/2025 09:39

@LizzyMumsnet This may have already been asked and answered, I'm not going to subject myself to reading the whole thread, but why, exactly, have MNHQ done this?

MycatLarry · 19/09/2025 09:45

I dislike the colour changes intensely. The blue is far too bright and garish, I have to turn my phone brightness down just to browse the site, then turn it up when I leave, it's crazy. The OP's colour and my posts colour are too pale to see clearly.

So what are your thoughts on all these negative posts?

If it’s not changed back I don’t think I’ll bother with MN anymore, I’m not willing to give myself eye-ache over it. 😕

Also, the anonymity for posters who break Talk Guidelines is really concerning. Wtf? And wasn't mentioned in the "here are the updates" opening post.

I agree with others that I want to know if a poster has been deleted on a thread already. I don’t want to engage with someone who is obviously stirring up issues.
Who exactly did you survey? Can we see what options / questions were put to them?

Agree with @LindorDoubleChoc and @ChazsBrilliantAttitude

@LizzyMumsnet MN seems to be infantilising users yet again.
Bit of Big Brother creeping in.
Can't pick colours, can't see posters who break guidelines, can't see whose threads deleted on an anonymous site.
Big unwanted banner highlighting OP-which could be potentially problematic
MN seems to be controlling so much.

This "survey" which I assume was taken in MN canteen at lunch is completely at odds with what the users want but there is never any direct reply to concerns of the users.

I think you need to go back to why MN was so popular in the early days instead of these changes-which I assume are necessary for the contractors to get paid.

You have really missed the mark here. So much dissatisfaction...

@JustineMumsnet can you give some sense of your / MN’s response to the concerns raised about these changes?

The colour is one, but the Original Poster and My Post in such bright colour is more worrisome as well as removing the posters users name from deleted posts.

Some explanation of the thought processes if not some dialogue at the very least would be appreciated.

It actually makes me feel a bit sick after a while. It is the brightness of the blue, I think.

Seeline · 19/09/2025 09:53

I took part in a survey a while back.
I think it just asked whether we knew we could use colours to highlight OP and our own posts, whether we used them and did we like the colours.

There were definitely no questions relating to new colours or any examples.

Kreepture · 19/09/2025 09:53

Also, 2 responses on this whole thread is absolutely unacceptable.
@LizzyMumsnet

HoppingPavlova · 19/09/2025 09:56

It’s horrendous. You need to provide free sunglasses to anyone signed up. Were people wearing sunnies when the new look was tested, as how could this not be noticed before it was pushed out?

Helleofabore · 19/09/2025 09:56

And @LizzyMumsnet that swipe to next page feature is far too sensitive again. It is back to being too sensitive so that you cannot highlight a part of a post to quote rather than only using the quote function.

Please can we remove this swipe feature altogether. Or only have it in the area of the original post if that is how people use it. Currently, it is making replying to posts difficult.

Same. I hate this. It wasn’t broken, why “fix” it?

I agree. It's dire. Why make a change for the worse. It makes no sense.

No33 · 19/09/2025 10:02

It's awful and an accessibility nightmare.

But ableism is rampant on here, so I'm not surprised Mumsnet don't care.

TheDandyLion · 19/09/2025 10:18

As dark mode doesn't work, I've added a dark reader extension to my browser to tone down the brightness of MN light mode.

Happyapplesanspears · 19/09/2025 10:27

It looks tacky.

FGSWhatNow · 19/09/2025 10:28

CriticalCondition · 18/09/2025 19:21

The pink is vile. It has a fish paste/blancmange vibe. Genuinely disgusting.

And what's the point of the huge 'Original Poster' and 'My Posts' (sic) button-like banners? They're ugly, obtrusive, annoying and, as posts are identifiable by colour, utterly pointless. Stupid visual litter.

Like millions of other posters I scroll through MN on the train or on the sofa with family at home. I don't want anyone who glances at my phone to be able to see instantly what I've said because my posts have got a sodding great banner all over them.

What on earth were you thinking?

This is an excellent point - the banners are too prominent and a total giveaway that you've posted on a thread if someone happens to be looking over your shoulder.

DrBlackbird · 19/09/2025 10:34

NebulousSadTimes · 19/09/2025 09:39

@LizzyMumsnet This may have already been asked and answered, I'm not going to subject myself to reading the whole thread, but why, exactly, have MNHQ done this?

A ‘refresh’ apparently. I’m thinking of when Royal Mail momentarily became Consignia wasting several million in the process or when Coca-Cola changed the formula of Coke. The salutary lesson of the latter example is beautifully summed up by:

The Coca-Cola Company spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out where it had made a mistake, ultimately concluding that it had underestimated the public reaction of the portion of the customer base that would be alienated by the switch.

MN take note that Coke sales went up considerably after the company realised its error and switched back to the original formula.

NebulousSadTimes · 19/09/2025 10:44

I balk at the phrase 'lessons will be learned' but I've got my fingers crossed in this instance.

BunnyLake · 19/09/2025 10:47

Mantari · 19/09/2025 09:49

It’s all horrible and pointless. If they don’t change it back or improve it I’m not going to come on here anymore as sore eyes aren’t worth it. (Not just for the sore eyes but for distain of the users).

Kreepture · 19/09/2025 10:49

Wonder how long they're going to leave us without a comment. pushing 2hours since start of business

Yamyamabroad · 19/09/2025 10:52

Do you know what? This might be the change that helps me to kick my Mumsnet habit. I've started on the active list a couple of times in the last 24 hours and stopped half way down as I cant be bothered with scrolling back down to where I was and the colours make me peer too much. I'm treating this as a positive change to get some of my life back.

NebulousSadTimes · 19/09/2025 10:55

I'm having similar thoughts @Yamyamabroad .

Me too. I’ve been spending far too long on MN recently. Time to regain a life!

Edited to add, I’m wondering if more international voices have begun to post as the reason for the slew of interesting conspiracies recently being raised in threads. It’s an open forum, they’re allowed, but the reason I loved MN was the quintessentially British nature of the well informed expert women’s voices. Ah well.
