A few updates to Mumsnet 🎨

You might notice things are looking a bit different today. We’ve given Mumsnet a colour refresh, based on feedback from you in our surveys (thank you!).

We’ve also moved a couple of things around to reduce clutter and make things easier to find:

  • Watch now sits under the OP post
  • Report has moved into the meatball menu (the three dots on posts)

As ever, we’d love to hear what you think, so please share your feedback below.

Please reverse this awful update. It’s too bright and everything is much more difficult to read overall.

I already use the accessibility features on my phone but it’s not enough with the new update.

SabrinaThwaite · 18/09/2025 22:23

I don’t need big banners telling me which posts are mine and which are OP’s - I had them highlighted in different colours which has worked just fine for years.

And now that it’s after 10pm and my phone settings have gone into nighttime mode, the colours are vile.

Thanks MN, for even more pointless changes to make the user experience worse.

Kreepture · 18/09/2025 22:25

To add to my earlier post your update have made it impossible to read your ad threads see screenshot

Well, at least that’s one positive

SolIy · 18/09/2025 22:26

Please god remove the Original Poster and Your Post buttons. They are unnecessary if you have highlighted posts, and they’re just ugly too.

PhilMitchellsleatherbomber · 18/09/2025 22:27

Helleofabore · 18/09/2025 17:17

It is not just the colours though. Posts that have been withdrawn or deleted no longer have the poster’s name on my phone view. So you don’t know if it is you deleted or someone else.

@LizzyMumsnet please put the usernames and time back on the posts that the team has deleted whether it is deleted or withdrawn. Thanks.

I was just coming on to say the same, it’s really confusing and annoying.

It’s very nice and was a lovely surprise.

🤣 Are you working for Mumsnet?

Agree - it’s a shit show of change for change’s sake.

I find it hard to believe that a survey of regular users came up with this as an any kind of improvement.

I have yet to see one of these 'regular users' own up to doing the mystery survey in question.

IMissTheSunshine · 18/09/2025 22:43

Colour is too bright. For sensory reasons (am autistic) I now find it hard to use the site

ifIwerenotanandroid · 18/09/2025 22:44

Could MN please provide a link to the survey, or just an image of the colour choices available on the survey? (Although it would be interesting to know what overall changes were considered & rejected.)

I searched for it via Advanced Search & found a survey about the app - are app colours going to change, or have they already?

They have already. They match the desktop.

Hiii...please can we have the laughing emoji back 😂? And possibly a hug one? 🫂
And when I've read a thread and want to go back to read the next one, the back button now takes me all the way to the beginning...?
Byyye!

Hi all,

Thanks so much to everyone who’s taken the time to share feedback on the recent updates, we’re working our way through your comments!

A couple of quick updates:

  • If you’d prefer a different look, you can customise colours under Settings > Talk settings. From there, you can choose how your own posts and threads by author are displayed.
  • We’ll also be adding the Watch button back to the bottom of the page shortly.

Wow. Dismissive comments from MNHQ.
I have visual impairment and also processing issues.
You clearly did not use any test scenarios for anyone falling in to my bracket whatsoever.
So no thought or care for accessibility at all.
I have had to turn down brightness from my usual settings simply to be able to look at the screen at all.
And the colours are now so insipid that they barely register a difference to my eyes. So I can no longer easily distinguish between the OP, my posts, or others, by colour - which due to processing issues (which the newly added titles do not help with) - was really an important feature for me to be able to use the site. So important in fact, and I didn’t realise how important until it was suddenly removed today.
The only benefit I can foresee is, as PPs have said, less time wasted on MN.

And no, this isn’t simply a change of styling that I’ll get used to, it’s now approaching unusable for me. I can’t believe that visual accessibility is completely irrelevant in 2025 tbh.

Regular users who were surveyed = MNHQ.

Design implementation = MNHQ offspring doing work experience.

I mean, seriously, who was clamouring for pale grey posts?

Who thought big badges stating the obvious was necessary for our muddled brains?

Oh hang on, I could be wrong, realised I am not on the app, but the mobile browser, sorry!

PhilMitchellsleatherbomber · 18/09/2025 22:51

@LizzyMumsnet please can you put the time and user names back on deleted and withdrawn posts, it’s important to know if it’s our own posts that have been deleted and also we need to know if we want to interact with posters whose posts break talk guidelines, posters who break talk guidelines shouldn’t be hidden.

SabrinaThwaite · 18/09/2025 22:52

Sometimes I like family members to read a thread - they don’t know my username or know that my posts show as a different colour so all good.

Not any more due to a BIG RED LABEL.

Thanks MN.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/09/2025 22:55

@LizzyMumsnet these are my screen brightness and eye comfort shield (blue light filter) settings, and it's still too bright. I cannot turn it down any further. The new, lighter brand blue and the glaring white background make it impossible for me to read more than a few pages before getting a headache and the start of a visual migraine.

Telling us to change the colours in settings is no help - that only gives a few (largely invisible) shading options for OP and own posts - not for the bulk of the screen which is what causes the main problem.

Dark mode is marginally better, but still sends me.crosseyed after a while - and doesn't have the colours for distinguishing posts. It does, however, have a completely unreadable pink for links.

I will be spending far, far less time.on here. And certainly won't be paying for Premium, which I was on the brink of doing. When I could spend 14 hours a day glued to tribunal discussions it would have been worth it to get rid of the ads. If I'm only able to dip in for 5 mins here and there it's not worth the cash.

[Edit to add] very strong agreement with the points made by PP about the My Posts flag. It and the Original Poster one are intrusive and ugly, and the former is also a real problem for privacy.

Presumably users could have changed the colour of their posts to be the same as everyone else's, so they wouldn't stand out at all? But there's no option to get rid of the useless 'my posts' button.

Kreepture · 18/09/2025 22:57

slightly odd question, but why does the box say 'my posts' and not just 'my post'
it doesn't DO anything, it isn't a clicky button, it doesn't open all my posts in the thread, it's just a label like i'm on the EA bug reporting forum where they feel the need to colour code and label every post depending on its fix level

Therefore, it doesn't need to be plural, just singular.

Now i will stop being a pedant.

ratinamustardhat · 18/09/2025 22:58

The redesign makes the site utterly unusable. It's way too bright and the colours are not compatible with accessibility rules. It's just awful. Please, please revert.

I think that someone on this topic today said that if you pay, you can see all your posts on a thread - but I might be wrong about that.

From memory (it was many years ago now), it was an option to choose colours for the OP’s posts and your own posts.

So I did.

Hence fucking enormous red labels pointing out the same things being utterly fucking redundant.
