Constant intrusive videos

These are driving me mad. I understand you need to sell advertising space, but on every thread there is a highly intrusive video. Even when I close them down they reappear on the same thread! Surely once a user has closed the ad that should be it?

Now I'm getting them popping up again as soon as they are closed, so annoying and distracting. I have no idea what the ads are as I don't look at them so it's pointless advertising

LadyMars · 28/08/2025 21:16

They’ve stepped up their pace and effect.
They’re constantly popping up one after the other. On some threads they’re popping up and I can’t scroll down the thread at all, it’s not frozen but won’t move more than an inch then drags back to the point where the advert popped up.

I’m so fed up of this. I use MN to destress after stressful days, and I’m going to have to step away now.

I don't think anyone is listening to us here.

They are listening. They just don’t care.

Makehaysunshine · 28/08/2025 21:25

Money talks.

Stowickthevast · 29/08/2025 07:31

Still coming here on chrome browser, android phone. I click skip and, and it just comes back after about 10 secs. Any update on how you can solve this @BeckyAMumsnet?

It's very triggering for migraines.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 29/08/2025 07:48

When I was going through only the ops posts by using next the video popped up everytime.

Chemenger · 29/08/2025 10:20

Surely nobody actually looks to see what these annoying videos are before they close them? Not effective advertising at all if nobody registers it.

Well, I certainly have no idea what the little girl rugby player dashing about in period dress is advertising, but if I see her any more I’m going to punch my screen.

Nope. Can't see. Can't work it out. Don't bother trying. One of them has a vespa in it and there's one with a person running around frenetically but could be advertising anything tbh.

I’ve literally just downloaded an ad blocker for the very same reason. It’s driving me mad!

Please could you tell me which ad blocker you have downloaded? I'm absolutely useless at stuff like this. TIA

@BTECBetty @BeckyAMumsnet The large flashing and explicit Ann Summers side ad is back now on a thread about baby bereavement. How inappropriate, insensitive and tacky is that. We were told that those ads were gone, but they are not and are still appearing in the worst places.

That’s awful. I’m so sorry you had that experience, @TheHillsIsLonely.

The claim that ‘Once closed, the ad should not reappear on the same page’ from MNHQ is sadly proving untrue based on the evidence of many users’ experiences, and some of them as you say are sited really inappropriately and unprofessionally. (I’ve been ‘lucky’ that for me it’s only been x4 appearances of a Pokemon advert and x3 of Borderlands on this one page in the space of a few minutes.)

I also don’t want to entrust MNHQ with my banking data, given the previous data breaches, but doing this via ‘Premium’ seems to be the only way to pay to turn off adverts at present.

It's free to use duck duck go as your browser or as a chrome plugin.

I think I’m going to have to, @NeverDropYourMooncup.

Like a lot of other posters have said, I don’t mind a few adverts as the price of using the site for free, but this is crazy.

I was just reading a post on the RF board and had to turn off that fecking Borderlands 4 advert twice by the time I was half way through it. And I’m a quick reader.

It just screams ‘cheap’, ‘shoddy’ and ‘shoestring’ website to me.

Oh here’s Borderlands 4 again, while I’m writing this. And again! I’m being stalked …

SidewaysOtter · 29/08/2025 12:51

If MN isn't going to do anything to fix the issue, perhaps we should start contacting the advertisers and ask whether they're happy for their ads to be driving women away from a site that's often an important form of support?

MySadHappiness · 29/08/2025 13:17

Well one thing I know is that I now loathe Borderlands 4. I’ve been shown it an additional dozen times since I last posted. I clicked off x11 times and let it run once. It doesn’t make any difference at all. It repeatedly appears even when I’m not scrolling.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 29/08/2025 13:49

Yes Ive tried that too. Just let it run and hope it’s got its fix. To no avail.

PipMumsnet · 29/08/2025 13:53

Hello and thanks for your patience.
We made a change yesterday which means that when you close the video player with the 'X' you should see fewer videos. However if you press "Skip" the videos will keep appearing so you must close with "X".
MNHQ

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 29/08/2025 14:06

Sometimes there’s no x

Where should it be?

im on latest iOS / iPhone on web not app

clotheslinefiasco · 29/08/2025 14:10

Hmmm

Closing with the x - still appearing on Every Single Page.

And it's still v irritating.

And no one is watching these pointless ads - just saying

GiveMeWordGames · 29/08/2025 14:56

Nah, thanks @PipMumsnet , I'll just always use duckduckgo to look at MN from now on and not see any ads at all rather than having to click stupid annoying video ads off.

Which is a shame for brands like Roman because I do acually shop with them and something would catch my eye and I'd click through. Not any more though, thanks to this other intrusive garbage in which I have zero interest. I might let Roman know actually. Massive advertising shittification fail on MN's part!

@PipMumsnet show me where the X is on either of these ads. Please notice how they are covering the entire screen between them (which I screenshoted while frozen as the video was stuttering and I couldn't scroll past).

Ignore the foreign language. I use a VPN for work and it throws up all sorts of ads. I am in the uk

PipMumsnet · 29/08/2025 15:06

Hi @clotheslinefiasco
Sorry this is proving to be so frustrating, could you by any chance take a screen recording when this happens next? And then please email it to us at [email protected] for my attention.
Pip

LoveMyLifeAlways · 29/08/2025 15:08

The above was in Google Chrome on an Android. I find the iPad is worse on mn. Fortunately I know how to avoid your ads 👍

I will never ever give man my card details because there have been too many hacks.

How much is it to subscribe?

A fiver a month.
It just makes it less stressful for me without having adverts, and I've been able to get in on some consumer testing too which have had some brilliant freebies.

I think that for a website that I browse several times a day probably, its worth the £1.25 a week to have it all clean and advert free.

Yes I must agree.
