Constant intrusive videos

These are driving me mad. I understand you need to sell advertising space, but on every thread there is a highly intrusive video. Even when I close them down they reappear on the same thread! Surely once a user has closed the ad that should be it?

we want to make sure it doesn’t disrupt your experience more than necessary.

more that necessary? So that's your business aim is it? That's a very low bar.

Helleofabore · 27/08/2025 05:27

@BeckyAMumsnet

The videos still keep cycling though on the same page after closing them down.

isthismylifenow · 27/08/2025 05:45

Such a shame. I could just about tolerate the huge mid screen ads which completely block the screen, get annoyed and try again.
But adding this in, this is just too much now. The site is so frustrating to use. I get they earn a revenue from the ads, but surely to goodness they should be in the background rather than fill half a screen.

This is most definitely not the way to encourage people to sign up for premium. It is having the complete opposite effect.

Makehaysunshine · 27/08/2025 07:23

The thing is the vast majority of people don’t register what the ads are for. I don’t anyway. It’s just get rid of it as fast as you can or scroll on by. I can’t see how they are generating sales.

ChompandaGrazia · 27/08/2025 07:28

For me personally they are annoying because of the way they drop in and literally cover what I am reading or reading even typing. The fixed banner ads at the top I don’t mind. But these ones are so much more annoying because they suddenly appear.

ShowOfHands · 27/08/2025 08:08

Most of the time I can't see what the ad is for anyway. It's too squished up at the top of my screen and I am furiously jabbing at it trying to get it to go the feck away. As a form of advertising, it doesn't work and makes the site unusable.

And as others have said, they don't stay gone, they pop back up.

I used to pay for premium and have considered doing so again, but I did so in the first place because I cared a lot about MN and the role it played in women's lives. Right now, I just feel irritated by it's lack of usability.

And in the time it took to write this message, I've had to close FIVE pop up ads.

Lksjoan · 27/08/2025 08:51

They keep coming back, click it to go away and it drops down again.
Very disappointing response from MN.
Why are they so determined to find ways to make this site more shite?
I really can't be bothered to spend much time on mn now

jumpingthehighjump · 27/08/2025 09:04

jumpingthehighjump · 26/08/2025 17:48

Chrome laptop

It's totally stopped for me

I take that back!

No it hasn't!

But if I 'skip ad' or X it, that doesn't work because although that one goes, another one pops up.

Ratafia · 27/08/2025 09:22

MN pages can run very slowly at the best of times. Adding a video to the list of what has to be loaded just makes it even worse. I wish you would concentrate on fixing the basic loading problem which has been around for years.

MySadHappiness · 27/08/2025 10:31

Came for racism, stayed for the moving intrusive adverts

said no-one, ever

Thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to share feedback about the new video ads and our apologies for the delay in responding. We understand that they can feel intrusive, and we’re working with our ad partner so improvements can be made.

Once closed, the ad should not reappear on the same page. It may show again if you move to a new page, but if it appears without navigating away, please send a screen recording to [email protected] so we can investigate. We’re aware that the close button can be fiddly on some devices, and this is something we are monitoring.

While advertising is an important part of keeping Mumsnet free to use, we want to make sure it doesn’t disrupt your experience more than necessary. Your feedback is really helpful in helping us strike that balance.

they definitely don't stay away, close them, scroll a bit, they come back (on laptop, using Microsoft Edge)

LadyMars · 27/08/2025 10:46

Just scrolling through this last page with 11 posts on it 4 adverts have dropped down.

I’m fine with the adverts that don’t move. All the adverts that flash and move make me feel weird and sick. I don’t want to leave MN because it’s a bit of a lifeline, but I honestly feel at this point that the user experience is getting worse and worse. It used to be so much better!

Kreepture · 27/08/2025 10:47

i dont have a 'screen recording' but i did just film while scrolling on this page.

video pops in at 10:40, i closed it immediately. It came back again at 10:42, closed it, stopped the video. Came in again at 10:45 and 10:47.

It doesn't matter if i physically close it via the x, or let it run and it closes itself, it comes back every 2 minutes.

I don’t think the balance has been struck…

so this is with 3 items hidden?

the "hide" thing isn't working for me anymore. I think some websites are designed to stop it.

TheHillsIsLonely · 27/08/2025 13:53

@BTECBetty @BeckyAMumsnet The large flashing and explicit Ann Summers side ad is back now on a thread about baby bereavement. How inappropriate, insensitive and tacky is that. We were told that those ads were gone, but they are not and are still appearing in the worst places.

I’d already been hiding items as they appeared but then as I scrolled and the advert between the posts appeared, then the drop down video completely covered most of what was left of the screen I gave up!

BookShark · 27/08/2025 14:48

I've closed the video ad 3 times so far while reading updates to this thread. It's definitely not stopping!

Make that 4!

JudeyJudey · 27/08/2025 20:07

I don't think anyone is listening to us here.

Mumteedum · 28/08/2025 09:44

They definitely repeat more than once. I also find it hard work then the banner ad at the top is a video one anyway and then another pops up over it.

If you have sensory issues, this is very off-putting.

Same here. I’m on an iPhone and between the video up the top that seems to be immune to me pressing the x to shut it and the huge Tesco add in the middle that as I scroll down I inadvertently end up pressing on and keep being diverted to my Tesco app, I could scream! My whole page is 70% adds it feel with a bit of Mumsnet posts in between.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 28/08/2025 13:04

I’ve tried recording the screen but I can’t quite get it! It disappears then returns. Sometimes 4/5 times in succession on the same page!

Also I’m constantly clicking between pages on mn so the ad is designed to pop up every time you go to a different page?

TheHillsIsLonely · 28/08/2025 13:58

Mumsnet with all the ads now is like trying to quietly read or have a decent conversation whilst sitting right next to a lewd, annoying and flashing arcade game.

FGSWhatNow · 28/08/2025 16:13

@BeckyAMumsnet can you confirm that this is how the adverts should work? I have been reading MN on my tablet this afternoon and this flashing advert (screenshot attached) has randomly popped up several times. It covers the whole screen and the only way I can find to get rid of it is using the browser back arrow, which takes me out of the thread and back to whatever my previous screen was. There doesn't seem to be any way of cancelling the fecking annoying advert other than this.

Samsung tablet, desktop site via chrome browser...

Constant intrusive videos
Kreepture · 28/08/2025 16:18

Just to say, i did email MNHQ with my video of the video popping up every 2-3 mins despite being closed via the X.

They just said thanks and they'd continue to respond on the thread.
