I've added a picture, though I don't know if it will be allowed. Ann Summers adverts have been popping up mid thread for a few days, mostly pictures of women in thongs and stockings from behind though also a model with crosses over her nips in some sheer thing. It's so embarrassing if I'm browsing MN in the queue for Pilates or at a coffee shop and someone looks over my shoulder and sees these tacky, porny images.

I thought ads were targeted but I have never visited the Ann Summers site in my life and never would - it's all nasty polyester, I feel itchy just seeing the adverts. I'm surprised ads featuring naked bums are ok on Mumsnet - it's really putting me off scrolling! Shouldn't they be blocked?

Why is it so important for some posters to try to belittle other posters for objecting to these Ann summers adverts?

Calling people prudes or making out that there's something deeply wrong with people who don't want to see bare buttocks and skimpy underwear designed to titillate is not going to achieve anything. It won't make those people think they suddenly do want to see those ads or that they are fools to object to them. I do wonder whether these strenuous posters are men because of the level to which they seem determined that others should have to view these pictures of half naked women in adverts for a sex shop.

I echo others' comments that it's impossible to remove the ads. One popped up again last night, no arrow but some lines which I pressed, it sent me to a website where all I could do was say whether I wanted personalised ads or not, no option to remove. If ads like this are shown then at least give the option to remove.

If anyone is belittling anyone it's not the posters who are asking what the fuss is all about

One of the anti ann summers posters accused another poster of having a shameful sex life! Just because they don't agree on the matter of MN hosting these ads.

Why is that ok?

I'm not the one that needs another word though am I...I'm perfectly happy with the Collins version.

Anyway as goback says maybe it's not fair to expect you too much from you.

Well I certainly can't reply to that incoherent gobbleygook.

I am that poster. It wouldn't be ok if I'd started it but you and your chum started throwing out insults, and are so determined to insist everyone should see these ads I can only assume such vehemence comes from your own inadeqaucies.

Oh and drop the whinging about "shaming" that's exactly what you and that other poster are trying to do to anyone who disagrees with you.

Really? You don't think those posters are trying to belittle people who find the ads offensive?
These are some of the comments from the pro Ann Summers ad brigade describing posters who object to the ads. No one could say these comments weren't trying to belittle:

Prudes

Having unhealthy sexual relationships

If they don't like the ads they should talk to a therapist

Sexually repressed

Have issues

Jealous middle-aged women who can no longer get away with wearing lingerie

All that simply because they object to seeing pictures of a woman's bare buttocks and a topless french maid outfit on threads about dementia, sexual abuse and children in Gaza.

Hi all - thanks for your comments. This ad is appearing via programmatic advertising, which means it's not directly placed by us but arrives through an open auction system. Advertisers bid in real time to show ads based on things like page content, general browsing behaviour, and what the algorithm thinks you might be interested in - it doesn't necessarily mean you or anyone around you has been Googling something similar. Ann Summers is a permitted advertiser on Mumsnet, but we appreciate that some of the imagery may not appeal to everyone.

If you'd prefer not to see ads like this, you can click the small "X" or "AdChoices" icon (usually at the top corner of the ad) and follow the options to provide feedback or manage your ad preferences. This helps refine what types of ads are shown to you based on your interests. You can also manage this for everything you may see on Google: https://myadcenter.google.com/kids?sasb=true&ref=ad-settings

Thanks again for the feedback.

As PP have pointed out, this advert (alone, of all the ads I've seen on MN today) doesn't have the x/ad choices button.

Why not?

BeckyAMumsnet · 31/07/2025 11:47

Hi there, not all ads are required to have an ‘X’ to close them. Some types are designed to stay on the screen for a short time, which is allowed under standard advertising rules.

We’ve blocked a number of the ads that were flagged, but if you spot any others you think we should see, please do let us know and we’ll review them.

NewAgeNewMe · 31/07/2025 20:24

Thank you

TheHillsIsLonely · 31/07/2025 20:52

Flashing Ann Summers is back tonight. I thought they had been blocked.

Buxusmortus · 31/07/2025 21:50

@BeckyAMumsnet

I have just seen the bare buttocks and stockings Ann Summers advert on a thread about death and again there was no way of getting rid of it.

I would like to know which ones you blocked if that one is still allowed on the site.

Fizzer5 · 01/08/2025 13:27

It is a bit embarrassing to get these when you are using a library. A man using in similar place would be thrown out as a sex fiend.
Not seen any today.

I do not believe anyone tolerant, balanced and professional would evict a library user over a harmless underwear advert on a website, or even for that matter an involuntary porn pop-up, unless they proceeded to have one off the wrist.

Huh?

Are you seriously saying that if a man logged into Mumsnet at a library, he'd be thrown out because of an Ann Summers advert?

Really?

The AS ads haven't been blocked at all, in fact they have got worse. They are back tonight, this time including vibrators.

Seeing ads like this should be a choice for women, not something forced upon us.

This isn't acceptable. Listen to your users.

Ah craptastic, I didn't see that one, It would have reminded me to go shopping

Gobacktotheworld · 02/08/2025 21:53

Kill the wabbit.

Fizzer5 · 03/08/2025 15:55

No Ann Summers today but some clothes from Shein. Some are a bit tarty. It would be fun to have some of those as a 'fun set'. Live a double life.

Gobacktotheworld · 03/08/2025 17:55

Just got an ad for a mankini on Facebook.

Managed not to get too mesmerised by it to scroll on.

Looploop · 03/08/2025 19:21

I wouldn’t belittle the people who are upset. There may be settings where it is embarrassing - imagine it popping up in your office over three screens! But also I didn’t find the pictures very explicit myself.

TheHillsIsLonely · 09/08/2025 21:20

@BeckyAMumsnet @HebeMumsnet The ads are back tonight, multiple flashing images, more explicit and you can't get rid of them unless you leave the page. They then reappear again on other pages.

HebeMumsnet · 11/08/2025 10:30

Thank you, @TheHillsIsLonely . We'll review them again today.

Gobacktotheworld · 11/08/2025 10:42

They're easy to scroll past.

murasaki · 11/08/2025 11:47

I seem to only see them mostly on the feminism boards. Particularly a gold thing that looks more designed for a man, namely Alan Partridge. Totally inappropriate.

FuckedOffWithTheLotOfThem · 11/08/2025 21:23

@BeckyAMumsnet @HebeMumsnet I've just cone onto Site Stuff to post about these ads and seen this thread. The ads are offensive. I do not want to see some woman's arse trussed up in underwear that looks like gaffer tape, sex toys or peep-hole bras. To make it worse, there was no "x" to click on to make the bloody things disappear. I thought mumsnet was supposed to be a beacon of feminism, not a gateway to soft porn.

PipMumsnet · 12/08/2025 13:26

Hello and thank you for your patience with this - you will no longer see these ads.

Gobacktotheworld · 12/08/2025 13:46

Thank goodness. I would have had to spend a fucking fortune in smelling salts otherwise.
