I can only see lots of posts with an option to load more.

On safari, iPhone 6, customised settings are set to 25 per page.

Am jealous of those with their pages back 😭

Brefugee · 06/03/2025 18:38

thank you - have my pages back now!

UnimaginableWindBird · 06/03/2025 19:09

If there's an option to opt out and get my pages back, please include me.

AdmittowearingCrocs · 06/03/2025 19:13

Thank you for restoring my pages 😀

One of the ideas behind it is that it'll lead to fewer people posting irrelevant crap

What a lovely way to speak about your users, without whom there would be no MN.

Cycleorrun · 06/03/2025 19:30

Yay! I've got my number buttons back! Thank you Mumsnet.

i wonder how they work that out though? i can imagine much more irrelevant crap along the "cancel the cheque" and "rtft" lines.

JadeSeahorse · 06/03/2025 20:38

So pleased to have found this thread as I seriously thought there was something wrong with my system.

Sorry but I loved being able to just click on a thread and then just hit the last page number to read the latest posts. Just can't get my head around what the "improvement" is supposed to be but admit to being a not very technical oldie.

The posts are loading really slowly too! ☹️.

Hate it! 😡

It's intended to make it easier for people to read the whole thread. Rather than having to click buttons to scroll through multiple pages, you just keep scrolling down the page. It's pretty common across the internet. Many many users have told us they like all posts to be on one page without having to scroll through pages. And yes, we've done lots of testing with lots of users.

What you're referring to as "pretty common across the Internet" is called 'endless scroll' and there are very valid criticisms of it, including those mentioned in the screen shot I took from Google search. I want to ask MN, in your desire to be more like other sites using this questionable model, have you unwittingly overlooked its negative aspects, or just decided to ignore them? At the very least, I feel strongly that you should allow your users to retain the option of the paged format.

baroqueandblue · 06/03/2025 22:23

Just to add, FYI, at the moment when I refresh this (horribly long!) page to go to my bookmarked post, it briefly lands on the bookmarked post before instantly bouncing back to the top of the thread. Not useful.

Flev · 06/03/2025 22:37

Can I have my pages back too please?

Sure, I can glance at the number of posts to know how long a thread is, but once I start reading in this horrible new format I have no sense of how far through I am and it feels really stressful - I don't know whether to give up or whether I'm nearly at the end. Normally I get to the end of a page and then decide whether to change to just reading OP updates, keep reading, skip forward or bail out - but you've removed these natural pauses. By all means offer this as an option - even make it the default option if you want - but why is removing our choice any sort of positive here? This thread has shown how different people interact differently with your site, and previously you let us do this - now we have a "one size fits some" approach. And it doesn't work for all.

Shitgift · 06/03/2025 22:40

Another in agreement it will drastically reduce my use of the site, it's unusable and any post that has more than 50 replies, I probably won't bother with. Also as other said it's particularly irksome on the telly addicts sub topic.

I've never sought out Site Stuff before but did to see if there was a thread about how annoying this change is.

Onlycoffee · 06/03/2025 22:41

This endless pageless scrolling is actual madness. I thought it was a glitch, not an actual feature.

Far too much scrolling to get to the reply box.

No actual way to know where you are in a thread or ability to get back to a post you might want to quote. Just endless scrolling.

Very disorientating.

You might want to read up on why Amazon added location, page numbers and timer to end of chapter/book.

baroqueandblue · 06/03/2025 22:47

I've just noticed this and my heart sank. You're taking lessons from Facebook. Facebook, ffs?!! I left that cesspit years ago because the way it's formatted messes with people's heads. MN was at least partly a refuge from that manipulative mess.

This is really saddening.

Shitgift · 06/03/2025 22:49

Reading through others responses it would be interesting to know the split of people who like the new forever scroll Vs pages broken down by media type. Then also the general user traffic broken down by media type.

I can see where for people using laptops or desktops it would be easier to read as one long scroll rather than clicking pages, but what is the percentage of site users using that media type Vs phones and tablets?

Will you be doing a poll for us guinea pigs? 😅

awlgy · 06/03/2025 22:55

Remove me from ‘test group ‘ please .

i mostly use MN on a laptop (what can i say, i hate typing on my phone - although it would probably make me more concise) and i hate it without the pages (as i said above: i have my pages back and the experience is improved exponentially)

Milodon · 07/03/2025 07:56

Another one who really does not like this! I like the pages to show me how long a thread is and how far I am through it, it also makes long threads more manageable to catch up on whereas a single page feels overwhelmingly long. What was wrong with having the page length options?

Hey - if you read the post of mine you've quoted here you'll see that I was using the language of the person I was quoting. Thanks.

ExtraDecluttering · 07/03/2025 08:04

The problem with the page length options was that if you chose to have them you then couldn’t search a whole thread without going into your settings and switching to show all posts and then having to switch back afterwards (you used to be able to toggle on a thread but that was taken away ages ago). Having all posts showing by default made threads too slow to load on data. I’m not in the test group but this sounds like an improvement to me. However I reserve the right to change my mind once I’ve tried it!

Hi @Onlycoffee - thanks for feedback - really useful. Just to say, you don't need to keep scrolling to get to the reply box - if you hit "add post" on any post, it'll take you straight to the reply box. Taking into account all your other feedback as well though, thanks for posting.

It might feel like an improvement to you, but many of us use MN in a different way, and searching through a whole thread rather than manageable chunks of 25 posts doesn’t work for a lot of us.

MN whatever you do I hope you allow us to retain the option to customise.

I don't wish to be in the test group for this, would you kindly remove me from it. I like pages - I set my limit of how many pages of responses to read before checking for OP updates. Thanks.

Frankley · 07/03/2025 08:32

Please bring back pages. It's awful and I'm finding it unusable.

ExtraDecluttering · 07/03/2025 08:38

Can you add me to the test group please, I'd like to try it
