I can only see lots of posts with an option to load more.

On safari, iPhone 6, customised settings are set to 25 per page.

that's interesting - do you mind me asking when you'd want to go the middle of a thread? And is it circumstances in which bookmark or save post wouldn't suffice? It's really helpful to understand this as we try and balance all the different needs...

I haven’t ever bookmarked before because never needed to but I could try it. For example I’m reading a thread on the tv board where people comment as they watch but I’m behind so I don’t want to see the end posts and see spoilers, I want to get to the middle. I would usually remember which page number I was on and easily get back to it

Hi @Togglebullets thanks. Makes total sense. There is a button which allows you to skip to the bottom of the thread but it's pretty hidden. If this was easier, would that solve your issue here?

One of the ideas behind it is that it'll lead to fewer people posting irrelevant crap as it makes it easier to read the entire thread...but the feedback is really helpful...

It really doesn’t make it easier to read the whole thread.

This is the reason I don’t use the app.

Incidentally, mine are still showing in 25 post pages. Is this just a trial for a few users?

that's a really useful insight thank you - if you wouldn't mind trying bookmarking a thread you're following like this and let me know if it does or doesn't do what you need that would be v helpful

yes it's a trial for a small number of users - as we try to work out what does and doesn't work. Many do find that it does make it easier to read the whole thread - do you mind me asking why you don't find it easier?

AlexandrinaH · 06/03/2025 14:38

For me, I like the pages option because I can go back to where I left it.

I don’t use bookmarking though.

I sometimes go back to threads and remember which page I was on, or which page I saw a certain post on (I know you can save a certain post etc,), I just like doing it the way I’ve always done it 😂

AlexandrinaH · 06/03/2025 14:40

If I ever use the app and I’m on a long thread, I feel like I can only go on it if I’ve got the time to read it all. I don’t have that issue using pages.

I know I could bookmark it, but sometimes I like to move between threads too which is easier with pages.

I can’t see why you can’t have both options available according to preference? Wouldn’t that solve it?

I know you didn’t ask me, but I’d like to explain what I usually do when I’m reading certain threads, as it’s impossible with this all posts all at once thing.

I tend to post on threads that I’m really interested in, and very often a poster will write something so eloquently and in a way that makes me think (sometimes it’s my own post that I feel proud of writing 😂), and I like to go back to reread and process it (I’m autistic, it can take a while to thoroughly process something), so for example I’m currently on a schools thread that’s very close to home (in a mental sense, not geographical!), and I find reading some different opinions several times, and in relation to replies (good or bad) and how the conversation goes, it helps me to develop a better understanding of the subject, of where other posters are coming from, and points me in certain directions to learn more about it.

I do this by knowing where certain posts are and going to the page number to find them again, as often as I need/want to.

I can’t do this now, and it’s frustrating, and it means my MN experience is now lacking. Not wanting to sound manipulative at all, but the change is really difficult to deal with, and not being able to go back to specific pages is really stressing me out!

It's intended to make it easier for people to read the whole thread. Rather than having to click buttons to scroll through multiple pages, you just keep scrolling down the page. It's pretty common across the internet. Many many users have told us they like all posts to be on one page without having to scroll through pages. And yes, we've done lots of testing with lots of users.

So we won't get our 25, 50 etc back? Final nail for me.

It is utterly unusable

EarsUpTailUp · 06/03/2025 14:49

As this is a small number of users can I opt out?

Can I also ask why you didn’t ask for opinions before trialing this? I can’t see any benefits at all to it.

I don’t like change but I’m pragmatic about it. There was a big change years ago that many threatened to leave over, but I was like, let it go, I can understand why this needs to happen (can’t even remember what it was, but there was mayhem!). This though, why? I don’t understand.

(And I’m posting about it repeatedly because I’m so stressed about it!)

Hi @Iwishiwasapolarbear so on every post there are 3 dots in the right hand corner. One of the options underneath this is an arrow which says "bottom" - this takes you to the bottom of the thread. Does that make it easier to do what you need to do? (I'm not saying this is the solution btw - the feedback is really useful)

No. I want to be able to navigate

Brefugee · 06/03/2025 14:50

See now I have to scroll like a demented thing to go back to the post I replied to. (Any chance of a button to do that?)

Brefugee · 06/03/2025 14:51

SueMumsnet · 06/03/2025 14:12

hi - this is good to know - so you can see the number of posts on a thread at the top of the page next to the thread title - does this not achieve what you're looking for?

Nope

PhasednotFazed · 06/03/2025 14:54

I really don’t like this! Impossible to orientate yourself in a thread, skip to the right bit (yes could bookmark but equally if it ain’t broke…) or skip to the end etc. I’d love it if it could be put back!

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 06/03/2025 14:56

SueMumsnet · 06/03/2025 14:20

Totally understand. And does the number of replies that's next to the thread title not do this?

No.

Here is the screen shot of what I see. I navigate to my pages through "threads I'm on"

One screenshot shows all my threads - and the one I'm running. No clue as to total just how many new posts.

Second thread shows where it goes when I click (to my point in the thread presumably) again no idea of how many posts.

Where do I see how many pits there are and when do I need to start a new thread (I used to post a new thread when it got to the last page!)

Option to see 25 posts per page has gone.

I hear you on the stressful - I'm going to look at whether/how we can remove people from the test group. It's also definitely an option that if this does get rolled out further that we can have a setting where you don't have it.

Please can you remove me from the test group? If you cannot, I just won’t use the site anymore as for me, it is no longer user friendly.

Thank you so much. Please let it be permanent! 🙏

Is this test why I can no longer see page number buttons on my android phone? It suddenly happened yesterday. It's awful if you are trying to follow a thread with lots of posts. There is no way to get orientated. It's still working properly on my tablet. If it all goes like my phone it will be ruined for me. It's impossible to keep picking up a long thread from where you left it. Overwhelming on a fast moving thread.
If that has to be the way forward for you, so be it. I should miss you. Thank you for providing such a great site up to now.

This is interesting because it's the opposite for me, I wouldn't have a clue what page they are on but I can always remember a keyword and very easily find it using my browser search IF I have it switched to all posts. Like you I do quite often want to do this. But I keep it to 50 post / page as default so it loads faster when I am on data instead of wifi and have long been frustrated about not boing able to find things because I have no idea what page they are on. I think I am possibly going to prefer the new way because for me it will be a lot easier to find specific posts (I haven't got it yet though).

I also don't think it will be a problem using number of posts to see how long a thread is as opposed to number of pages as that's what I tend to do anyway when looking at most active. But I do like them for knowing how far into a long thread I am when I am reading and I don't see how that would work in the new system, how will you know how far though you are?

The main thing I want to keep is that if you click on a title in TIO it takes you back to the next unread post. I find bookmarks very clunky to use and only use them on threads that I haven't posted on but want to keep reading.

Yes but apparently it makes it easier to read threads 😂.

Not for everyone, clearly.

Not for me I'm afraid. I'm another one who finds page numbers easy to navigate from. They also give you information on how quickly a thread is moving. This test method is just a clueless jumble for me. I'd lose patience in no time.
