MN constantly freezing and lagging, and unresponsive links.

This has been an issue for a few weeks now in a bearable way, but it’s getting a bit worse lately.
Sometimes it appears to be adverts slowly loading and once they’ve appeared the site works again, but sometimes it’s stopping completely and nothing on the screen works at all and I have to swipe safari away and begin again. This isn’t happening on any other website.

I’m in the mobile version on safari. I’ve cleared cookies. I’ve turned my phone off and on again.

@MattTech My theory is it is a Tui ad. The one with the kid in goggles. I’m sick of seeing that kids face freezing my phone.

Amazon music ad for me. It's driving me nuts - MN been OK for a few days, but starting last night it's lagging again and that Amazon ad takes up my full screen, which takes a few attempts to scroll past it.

Come on MN - you used to be so on the ball with stuff like this

SnarkSideOfLife · 29/01/2025 15:49

Screenshot of it freezing a while ago, not sure what use this is? You can see only half the screen on the left is loaded.

I thought I was going mad. It’s bloody infuriating

Hobnobswantshernameback · 30/01/2025 07:12

Mumsnet totally unusable on my iPhone which is a good thing as am wasting far less time on here.
Maybe when their clicks and ad revenue start dropping HQ might actually be arsed to do something but I won't hold my breath.

KillingMoon · 30/01/2025 07:44

Same issue here on an IPad using Safari. Been happening for a few months. Also freezes the browser completely.

it works on private browsing…not ideal but it doesn’t freeze. I just have to log in every time. Maybe it’s time to break my addiction.

PandoraSox · 30/01/2025 11:47

It is happening again for me today after being OK for a while.

MarleyAndMarleyWoohooohooohooohoooo · 01/02/2025 19:27

Today has been ok for me. No freezing at all.

I can’t load big threads at all

OX986 · 01/02/2025 20:18

It’s been awful for me today. I think it’s the advert at the very top of the screen on a iPhone. Once that loads, or fails to load which is equally as common, I can scroll again.

SnarkSideOfLife · 02/02/2025 08:18

Really bad this morning

MN constantly freezing and lagging, and unresponsive links.
SnarkSideOfLife · 02/02/2025 08:19

For me it seems the advert on the bottom right often doesn’t load when the whole screen freezes. Whether that’s a cause or a symptom I have no idea.

SnarkSideOfLife · 02/02/2025 10:56

On my iPad it’s much worse on safari. Chrome works better. My iPhone is also better.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/02/2025 07:51

I've been having loads of problems with mumsnet freezing chrome on my phone. I have to restart chrome. Had assumed it was a reflection on the phone rather than mumsnet.

I've also had redirects towards dodgy sites while using my laptop. Norton blocked those sites.

SnarkSideOfLife · 04/02/2025 20:37

Website is 100% unresponsive and unusable on my iPad on safari for last few days now. It’s ok on chrome. So say if I open a page then the first couple of threads in active conversations will load, but below that and to the right it’s completely white. As per my photo the other day. I can’t click on anything, I can’t press the back button. I literally cant use Mumsnet.

I hate chrome on the iPad, am obviously using it but it’s a pain having to switch constantly from one browsers to another and I suspect some people would just think your website is down and give up.

safari on an iPad is not an obscure option. Are other ipad users having the same issue? Other websites all fine on safari

@MattTech was this screenshot any use or not seeing as the adverts don’t load so I guess not very helpful in pinpointing the advert.

VoyagerOfTheTeenYears · 09/02/2025 07:59

Having been using Mumsnet less and less over the last couple of weeks I have tried private browsing and it is working well. But I think Mumsnet must be losing people because of this problem.

NoSoupForU · 10/02/2025 12:54

I don't know how they can say it's not an ads issue when using an ad blocker literally eliminates it. They also shouldn't be advising people to remove the ad blocker as nobody using one has the problem.

Spoke too soon!
It’s not the worst it’s been, but it’s still freezing with no option but to swipe away safari completely.

They have actually said it’s an ads issue though, on the “constantly crashing and freezing” thread.

It’s apparently caused by a rogue cookie/cookies that have been delivered to some users phones or computers via the ads- they’ve acknowledged this and are apparently working on rectifying it.

Codlingmoths · 10/02/2025 20:28

It’s terrible

Haven’t you heard @NoSoupForU ? They are going to ban ad blockers altogether as those who use them are “piggybacking” and that is not fair to other users. Soon it will impossible to access Mumsnet with an ad blocker, and instead you will need to subscribe in order to view the site without ads.

See the post in Site Stuff from last week called “Introducing Pay or Consent”.

A cynic might say that if they allow the ads to keep causing so many issues, this might encourage people to subscribe…

They don't even bother being discrete with it either 😂
