This has been an issue for a few weeks now in a bearable way, but it’s getting a bit worse lately.
Sometimes it appears to be adverts slowly loading and once they’ve appeared the site works again, but sometimes it’s stopping completely and nothing on the screen works at all and I have to swipe safari away and begin again. This isn’t happening on any other website.

I’m in the mobile version on safari. I’ve cleared cookies. I’ve turned my phone off and on again.

Hello @MarleyAndMarleyWoohooohooohooohoooo we’re sorry you’re having these issues - it sounds very frustrating. We will look into this but in the meantime, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot:

Ensure your version of Safari is up-to-date.

Try Safari's private browsing mode. This bypasses certain cookies, cache, and extensions that may be interfering - let us know if the issue persists.

Also, can we check if you’re using any ad blockers - these can cause similar issues.

To help us investigate on our side, please let us know:
iOS version
Safari version
Type of phone (e.g., iPhone 12 Pro)
Specific page where the freezing occurs
Info about any ads loading when the issue occurs.

Thank you.

Hi there @MarleyAndMarleyWoohooohooohooohoooo . Sorry to hear you're still having problems with this on the new phone. Have you tried the suggestions from @BeckyAMumsnet above? Using private browsing and removing ad blockers has worked for most people with this issue. You could also try reducing your posts per page view in settings to 25, 50 or 100 posts per page rather than 1000.

Let us know how you get on with that and let us know if you still have no joy.

Hi everyone,

We're sorry that the site's not running smoothly for some of you. We're looking into what could be causing these issues, but in the meantime please try the suggestions in Hebe's post above, namely -

  • using private browsing
  • removing ad blockers
  • reducing your posts per page view in settings to 25, 50 or 100 posts per page rather than view all messages

Thanks for bearing with us. We'll be back with an update just as soon as we can.

HebeMumsnet · 20/01/2025 11:10

Thank you so much to everyone who has shared information about this problem with us here. It's really useful. We're continuing to work on it and will update as soon as there's any news. Thanks for your patience. Flowers

BeckyAMumsnet · 21/01/2025 17:05

Hi, everyone. Thanks for continuing to keep us updated. It would be very useful for us to see the issue happening in real-time. If anyone would be up for joining a call with one of our developers and sharing their screen as they browse MN, it would be a massive help. If that sounds like you, please either let us know on this thread or report this post. 🙌

Hi everyone. We're so sorry that some of you are still experiencing issues with the site. We've posted this message on the other thread but we're just repeating it here too. It would be very useful for us to see the issue happening in real-time. If anyone would be up for joining a call with one of our developers and sharing their screen as they browse MN, it would be a massive help.

If that sounds like you, please either let us know on this thread or report this post. Thank you.

Hi all...

I'm jumping in here to respond as there have been lots of questions about why we want to see this issue happening and why that is beneficial to us.

We have tonnes of people in-house using the site all day every day and, apart from very few occasions (two that have been reported), nobody is seeing this issue happen.

As asked earlier in the thread, this is both on the MNHQ network, home networks and also on typical home machines, mobiles and other devices and much higher-end machines that some of us use.

Seeing this happen in real time is beneficial to us because when it's happening we are able to ask you to do things in the browser which will give us much more insight about when this is happening and what is going on on the machine whilst it's occurring. We can check if there are any patterns, anything common among the user accounts that are experiencing it, or any commonality between the browsers and cookies that are present for the affected users.

And, being able to see it means that we are able to spot where in the request lifecycle (how we deliver the page to you) this happens.

As some of you have mentioned, the problems are intermittent. It can be fine for a few hours, or days, and then the problems return. This also makes it difficult to diagnose, but does give us some more information to work with.

There have been questions on here about the server load and whether the site is under unusually heavy traffic conditions. I can assure you that it isn't and that these problems aren't server related.

It's likely that there are one or multiple ads that are being displayed (or not if you're getting a blank page!) that are causing these issues. But without being able to inspect the page as the issue is occurring, we can't know for sure if that's the case or remove them.

There are some things to try if you're experiencing this issue:

  1. Clear your cookies and website data.
  2. Turn 'Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement' off if you're on an iOS device.
  3. Try the site in Incognito / Private browsing mode.

If you're experiencing the issue and Incognito / Private Browsing mode stops it from happening, that would also be really useful information for us to know.

If anyone who is experiencing this consistently is able to get on a call with me personally and show me what's going on I would really appreciate the opportunity to see this happening.

Thanks

Matt

@Lonelycrab When I said that there were only two reports, I meant internally from staff at MNHQ.

@ZimbleFox Apologies, I didn't mean directly in the browser. I meant on the machine in general. Things like looking at Activity Monitor if it's a Mac to see which processes are taking up CPU and RAM.

I think it's worth reiterating that nobody is denying that these problems are happening, or saying that this isn't something to do with what's happening on site. But these problems aren't happening for everyone and not consistently for the people who are being affected.

As I said in my previous post, this is likely related to some rogue ads that are causing problems. Ads are different for every user of the site which makes replicating this to get to the bottom of it much more difficult. This is why we need the help of the people experiencing it so that we can fix it for everyone.

If someone who is experiencing this consistently would be willing to get on a call with me to show me it happening I'd really appreciate the opportunity to get to the bottom of it.

Thanks

Matt
