MN constantly freezing and lagging, and unresponsive links.

This has been an issue for a few weeks now in a bearable way, but it’s getting a bit worse lately.
Sometimes it appears to be adverts slowly loading and once they’ve appeared the site works again, but sometimes it’s stopping completely and nothing on the screen works at all and I have to swipe safari away and begin again. This isn’t happening on any other website.

I’m in the mobile version on safari. I’ve cleared cookies. I’ve turned my phone off and on again.

Roughly a week to 10 days ago I started having problems with pop-ups from Mumsnet, Chrome browser & Windows PC

nonamehere · 21/01/2025 17:03

Same here - on Chrome, page goes blank, or scam virus ad appears. Both been going on for at least a week.

BeckyAMumsnet · 21/01/2025 17:05

Hi, everyone. Thanks for continuing to keep us updated. It would be very useful for us to see the issue happening in real-time. If anyone would be up for joining a call with one of our developers and sharing their screen as they browse MN, it would be a massive help. If that sounds like you, please either let us know on this thread or report this post. 🙌

AgreeableDragon · 21/01/2025 17:11

I get this too. I use Chrome, on a Samsung and on an ipad. It says the app is not responding. So frustrating!

Mrsbloggz · 21/01/2025 17:41

I've had to stop using MN on chrome on my desktop because I instantly get mccaffee pop ups or frozen white screen.
No other sites have this issue.

BigButtons · 21/01/2025 17:43

I have been having a mare with it. Pages are constantly freezing and reloading. It has been getting worse. I can’t load longer threads at all. Using safari with an iPhone.

blueshoes · 21/01/2025 17:48

Same here. Getting to the point of absurd. It was particularly bad on the thread below. At one point, my screen was freezing every 30 - 60 seconds, so I had to read as fast as I could before it froze.

May be because it is a fast-moving thread. I am on a laptop PC on chrome.

I get this too. Maybe for the last couple of months. Android phone, Chrome browser.

Do you really need one of us to screen share with your developers? I genuinely don't see how you can't replicate the issue at your end with just a few staff using the site in a browser?

I'd be happy to do a call with them but given some days the issue seems to occur every few minutes and others it can be fine for an hour plus before I have an issue which I suspect is similar for many experiencing the issue I can imagine most myself included would find it difficult to commit to giving up an unspecified amount of time in the hope it happened when screen sharing.

I'm also going to be honest I'm not sure how your developers seeing the page freeze, close down and or reload would be any more useful than me explaining that's what happens? How would seeing the issue occur actually be helpful in fixing the problem?

Mrsbloggz · 21/01/2025 17:56

It's working fine for me on the Brave browser, which also blocks all the adverts so I'll be staying on Brave for MN😎

QueenOfHiraeth · 21/01/2025 18:29

Happening for me too. I'm using Chrome on a laptop.
I've had some, presumably fake, warnings about a virus asking me to click to enable something. I just click back to Active Threads or close site and reopen.
Now I go onto a thread, get a few posts in then get a white screen which does not respond to anything so I have to go back.
It's happening enough that it's making the site hard to use and enjoy. Please fix it!

Twynklebell · 21/01/2025 18:48

Same here - using firefox. Its now almost unusable - page loads, then after a minute or so goes to a blank screen or tries to load another site with a fake virus warning.

Bippertyboo2 · 21/01/2025 18:54

I'm having the same problem on two devices and only when using Mumsnet.

This. Quite a few of us have been here for years MN, and always a few problems which I remember being sorted quite quickly. Your responses were always fast as well. Not so much help lately.

On the plus side - and I bet I've jinxed it - mine has been slightly better today 🤞

Georgyporky · 21/01/2025 18:58

Firefox & Chrome both keep losing MN on my PC - no other site affected.
Fingers crossed, Android tablet seems OK, but I prefer to use the PC.

Twynklebell · 22/01/2025 07:47

This is one of the re-direction attempts I'm getting.

Twynklebell · 22/01/2025 07:49

Sorry.. forgot to attach image.. Doh!

Yes, same. I thought it had improved but yesterday was horrible. Lagging, app waiting, blank screen, phone freezing and after this so hard to operate.

Maybe pull the plug out @BeckyAMumsnet MHQ, switch everything off and back on again or call Russia?

WhenSallymetBarry · 22/01/2025 08:22

It's getting worse!

I'm on a desk top DELL PC and using Chrome.

Every few seconds the page closes and I get a white screen.

AIBot · 22/01/2025 09:10

Same. Is the site getting unusually heavy traffic? It’s barely useable. It will have taken a number of attempts to post this, if I manage to.

This is happening to me too. Has been going on for a couple of days (at least).

Nursemumma92 · 22/01/2025 09:16

Yes it's been going on for me for weeks but I thought it was my phone getting old and slow. Does only happen on MN though and nothing else. Glad I came across this thread!

Largestlegocollectionever · 22/01/2025 09:16

Yup happening to me too, so annoying!

Allergictoironing · 22/01/2025 10:56

@BeckyAMumsnet I have to ask - has someone been trying proper user testing? I mean, a standard set up with no ad blockers on, on a "normal" home type device with standard home security levels, not using the Mumsnet network (which I assume will have high levels of security etc.)?

I know that not everyone is having these issues, but enough people that means with enough of your techs & staff testing under typical user conditions you may well see the issue happening. As @TwentyTwentyFive says above, there isn't really anything to see when this happens just that suddenly the screen goes blank for no apparent reason. There's no time to see anything happening, and the timings of this is so erratic you couldn't really schedule when would be a good or bad time to try.

As an example of how erratic the timing can be, in general the issue seems worse at peak times. But this morning everything for me was fine until around 6:45 - 7am, then suddenly the screen started blanking. It took me about 4 goes to read a single long-ish comment on a thread. I moved on to another thread in the same forum, no issues. Then the next one, had a blank.

Then I wanted to post a comment - total of 10 lines in 4 paragraphs (on a PC). It took me around 5 goes to get the first single line paragraph written. Then I managed to write the rest of the post with no more blanking. Each time I had to use the browser back button and go back to the page I had been on when I started the post, it had saved where I was up to in writing the post.

Moved onto another thread (different forum) - amount of blanking became so painful I gave up.

However I've now typed this entire long post without a single issue!

Allergictoironing · 22/01/2025 10:58

Meant to say - Windows 10 PC running Chrome, with professional virus checker (WithSecure) running and Malwarebytes.
