Why aren’t you banning the far-right agitators?

Deleting their posts but allowing them to keep inciting racial hatred under the same accounts is making the site unusable. Why should we keep reporting them if you’re not going to do anything meaningful about it?

It wasn't about you attending the vigil

It was about the misinformation re the riots

I think all the rest of us have in common is not being white supremacists, we don’t all share a common ideology. We’re not all left wing. People can hear you and their disagreement with your analyses does not mean they are silencing you, they just don’t agree with you.

Yet my utterly inoffensive eyewitness account of being at the official vigil was deleted. So no.

You repeated misinformation that was circulating online. So it wasn't personal about your account.

Did you include information about the man with the knife? As pp said a few posts that mentioned that were deleted. But ask MNHQ, I am sure they will reinstate the post if appropriate.

What misinformation? I wasn't at the riot. I didn't post about it, I posted about the vigil. Have I been reported and deleted because people assumed I was at a bloody riot?

GoldMedallist · 01/08/2024 13:28

It must be upsetting to have an innocuous comment deleted unfairly, the moderation can be hit or miss here. Nobody gets it right all the time. I hope it hasn’t put you off, MN can be a great resource. It’s my favourite waste of time.

And here we go, like clockwork. A knee-jerk 'educate yourself' (ironic from certain posters) just to try to shut down any opposition. It's not going to work. I'm very educated, thank you. Educated enough to see how this makes enemies of your ideology, educated enough to understand that this pig-headed refusal to face up to the resulting massive problems is ceding the fight to those you say you're against. We will have to have this conversation now: if (general) you wish to withdraw from it and sit in a corner trying to convince yourself how you're so superior to all the racists with their dogwhistles only you can hear etc, it will still go on and probably be better.

I don't mean you are uneducated generally.
I mean you must have a limited understanding of racism if you haven't recognised it on the threads and am suggesting that spending some time reading about the experiences of people from different backgrounds could help you understand why so many people are finding it so offensive.

GoldMedallist · 01/08/2024 13:30

Reporting alone doesn’t inevitably lead to deletion, only if the reported material is deemed to break the Talk Guidelines,

I said I was shocked to find out later that a knifeman had been arrested just round the corner from us at the official vigil. OMG, people are so ignorant that they think I meant at the riot! And I was told to educate myself! The absolute irony. Anyway @mnhq sometimes reports are so wrong they aren't even funny. This is a mess.

Will all due respect, you accused me of spreading misinformation. There are certain people no one needs to take lessons from.

If you read the replies to your deleted post, it might give you a clue.

If you had just posted about the vigil there would have been no problem

Your post was deleted so we cannot repeat the it but you can ask MN to explain.
If it was wrong, they might reinstate it

I don't think people would have been reporting you because they thought you were a rioter. Best to email MNHQ to find out as using the @ function won't work.

I posted about the vigil. People seem to think I posted about the riot, I'm now assuming because they didn't know or care there was a vigil which isn't my fault. The replies based on this ignorance have no bearing on my post. Education is definitely needed.

GoldMedallist · 01/08/2024 13:38

@Alltheprettyseahorses I imagine anyone would feel aggrieved if they felt the moderators had been unfair to them. You can contact them directly. It’s not likely to be anything personal so try not to take it to heart.

Why should the tragic events of this week lead to a debate about race though? It's been pointed out over and over again that the assailant may be of Rwandan heritage but there are no indications that it was a terrorist offence and (for about the millionth time on here) was born in the UK. Therefore, what has his race got to do with anything? He is one individual who did a terrible thing.

My conclusion is that it is for the same reasons that a far Right mob rioted and attacked a mosque in Southport, hatred of black and brown people and in fact anyone who does not conform to a norm. All the pompous puffery about "important debates" aside, it is that.

cakeorwine · 01/08/2024 13:48

I don't trust many posts on here - especially when someone says that "something has happened involving *insert name of minority group here""

It might well have happened. It might not. But it's so so easy to post something that people want to believe because it caters to their beliefs and biases. It serves to reinforce beliefs and radicalise.

I also see a lot of posters who can't be seen on advanced search who post and run.

For some reason

As someone from a 'different background' myself, I've educated myself quite enough on this thread. Given the responses on the threads I've looked at and the absolute debacle on here with the ridiculous, irrational and downright wrong assumptions about my post, it all removes any faith anyone could possibly have in the allegations of racism from posters on here. And no, I'm not some far! right!! fifth!!! column!!!! agitator!!!!! that the more fevered conspiracy theorists assume probably normal posters to be, I'm just a bog standard left-wing ex-Labour member, Remain-voting poster who joined about 13 years ago.

The Suspect Named thread, Duncin?

I want to cry at the racism (that apparently doesn't exist).

I've known all my life that the far Right doesn't give a toss whether someone was born in the UK or not if their skin colour or religion is what they deem "wrong". What is so depressing about some of the comments on here is the number of people who would probably not consider themselves far Right at all who clearly think the same thing. I'm even hoping that they are all bad actors rather than run of the mill MN members.

That's before we get to the statements of those who don't care if it transpires that he has mental health problems and just want him executed. In one case, without trial.

You reckon?
Antisemitism comes from the far right and the far left. And from Islam too.
The far right are more honest about it, the far left dress it up in codewords and using revised tropes and dogwhistles.

The far left are far scarier than the far right, in my opinion.

What is so scary to you about a radical form of politics that aims to create true universal equality?

There is a real issue with antisemitism. There are a lot of people claiming to be on the left who are falling into the trap of aligning themselves with antisemites and with Islamists. If X is anything to go by there are plenty of useful "Liberal idiots" who think themselves left wing by virtue of not being right of centre. They are so invested into the idea of projecting their credentials of morally virtuous intentions that they have subsumed this into their subjective feeling of 'who' they are. What they say becomes who they are in how they view themselves. It reinforces a sense of moral superiority that they feel to be an essential part of their own subjectivity. These liberals who are of the 'be kind' variety lack critical thinking and at present many are aligning themselves with people they perceive to be oppressed minorities. I would argue that anyone on the ultra left shouldn't ignore the threat that Islam poses to liberalism. Liberalism proposes moral relativism whilst Islam is absolutist, never the twain shall meet. As someone on the left I would welcome anything that undermines capitalism and liberalism. Liberalism offers false concepts of equality and capitalism creates materially the conditions that exploit and create inequality between men and women, rich and poor, us and them. But to hop into bed with one tyranny in order to defeat another is a dangerous thing.

We have a problem with immigration. We shouldn't have, and under the right economic social system we wouldn't have. And if it were not for capitalisms tendency to growth, exploitation and imperialism we would have neither people arriving on boats, or idiot flag wavers rioting. But it is very naive to shut down all debate and to exclude those most effected by mass immigration. These far right clowns, beer swilling, fascist twats, jobless chavs, idiots, knuckle draggers, unwashed, unclean rioting in the streets are the same people liberals are at pains to give charity to, show sympathy for, argue on their behalf and yet they despise them and the very notion of these working class people who have become immiserated (just as the liberal MC have become almost religious in their virtue signaling echo chambers) should have any real equality creates hysteria and fear. The liberals are busy shouting for food banks, about benefits and school dinners. In fact anything that sticks a plaster over the problem and keeps them feeling virtuous. An actual revolution that consigned their sympathetic mithering to history is the very last thing they want.

I have studied political economy and philosophy, and mainstream politics doesn't really interest me. In the last 20 years I have come to the conclusion that: Liberalism is on its death bed, and fighting for the future and equality for all does not rely upon aligning ourselves with any new tyranny. The left does not need to align itself with the interests of religious ideologues, and neither should we overlook the dangers of religious hegemony taking place.

As a side note I am chuckling, we have the far right shouting about the fact no one listens despite the fact they have swallowed the racist ideologies of the far right state. A bunch of fascists rioting and calling for the state to be .......more fascist. Punching police officers whilst demanding the police become less ineffectual. And the fascist state clearing up after itself, a bit like a junkie trying to get clean in the full glare of the the other useful idiots who are standing on the sidelines offering up kind and supportive words whilst inwardly passing moral judgment that the likes of Francis Galton and Hitler himself would endorse.
