Why aren’t you banning the far-right agitators?

Deleting their posts but allowing them to keep inciting racial hatred under the same accounts is making the site unusable. Why should we keep reporting them if you’re not going to do anything meaningful about it?

Thanks @BeckyAMumsnet.
I am sure the moderators have a lot on their plates right now trying to weed out the suspect posters. Hopefully things will calm down a bit soon.

Can I make a request about name changing? Would it be possible for new users to be prevented from name changing for a period, or a limit to the frequency at which name changes happen?

I think some posters name change a lot which makes it look like lots of different people hold those views.

If you suspect anything like this, report it to us as we can easily check if someone is abusing name changes.

GoldMedallist · 01/08/2024 12:12

I’m always deregistering, reregistering and I change my name a million times a day. It’s a bit neurotic but I could adjust if it made the site safer overall to remove or restrict those options.

I've had a look at a couple of threads along the lines of what the OP is talking about. I'm not seeing racism. I'm seeing a vital conversation started by sensible, informed posters being shut down with blatantly spurious accusations of racism from the start along with anti-working-class benefits-bashing bigotry from posters who clearly think they're lovely liberal middle-class lefties. But then, on this thread I've been accused of lying (no), being anti-muslim (never mentioned anything of the sort) and having posts deleted (not last time I checked) among other ridiculous lies. So that says a lot about how some people's perceptions are utterly divorced from reality, so it seems with this too.

We really do need to have serious conversations about race, male violence, knife crime and so on. We cannot allow people to be silenced by a few performatively offended posters because it will only make the situation worse. I'm glad mumsnet are providing a platform for it; they have a history of bravery on straightforward issues that certain groups claim are controversial and have shifted national discourse for the better many times. Myself, I fully trust mumsnet to deal with any racist posters as they always have and, indeed, are doing brilliantly now.

If you can't see the racism, with respect you are part of the problem and need to go and do some reading.

I hate the term "educate yourself" but in this case, please do.

Part of the reason you’re not seeing it is because, as MNHQ confirmed here, whenever there is an obvious influx of agitators their posts are deleted and their accounts deactivated.

With respect, this is a load of rubbish. I am a leftie, I am from a working class background, certainly don't benefits bash as my household is in receipt of disability benefits and yet I can still see the racism that has been aired on here since Monday.

You did have your initial ppst about the knife deleted. Sorry, but you fid.

And here we go, like clockwork. A knee-jerk 'educate yourself' (ironic from certain posters) just to try to shut down any opposition. It's not going to work. I'm very educated, thank you. Educated enough to see how this makes enemies of your ideology, educated enough to understand that this pig-headed refusal to face up to the resulting massive problems is ceding the fight to those you say you're against. We will have to have this conversation now: if (general) you wish to withdraw from it and sit in a corner trying to convince yourself how you're so superior to all the racists with their dogwhistles only you can hear etc, it will still go on and probably be better.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 01/08/2024 13:07

Wait - @MNHQ I have had no email saying my post was deleted. The post was about how I attended the official vigil outside the Atkinson in Southport and I mentioned that we found out later a knifeman was arrested literally round the corner. There was nothing offensive or racist in the slightest. Can you please tell me why my post, the post of someone at the vigil, was deleted? Is it because of multiple malicious reports or is it because, as heavily hinted by certain posters, people are so ignorant of the situation that they think I was at the riot that happened about 2 hours and a good 20/30 minutes walk away?

Are you saying there has been no racism spewed on MN since the awful events on Monday? That we have been imagining it all?

PandoraSox · 01/08/2024 13:12

@Alltheprettyseahorses you will need to email MNHQ. @MNHQ goes nowhere and will not get a response.

Also, MNHQ doesn't email posters when their posts are deleted, unless it is to tell them they are in danger of being or are suspended or banned.

DuncinToffee · 01/08/2024 13:12

You don't get an email.

It may have been deleted because it was hearsay, and something that was being spread by various malicious posters on other threads, or because of an implication that it was a non rioters. Can't read it now to see. But thought you would like to know.

There is definitely exaggeration at best and fabrication at worst and I'm bearing the brunt of it myself. Anyway, my only interest on this thread now is to find out why my post about being at the moving and respectful official vigil - where I left flowers - was deleted. Would that go for everyone who stood outside the Atkinson? Are none of us allowed to post?

Tell that to MNHQ who have had to work hard deleting the "exaggerated" and "fabricated" racism and far right misinformation that has been peddled all over the site.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 01/08/2024 13:17

I always thought mumsnet sent an email when posts were deleted. It's pretty sobering to find out that we can't post about being at the official vigil. I haven't got much to say, I couldn't hear a thing, but y'know...

I think all the rest of us have in common is not being white supremacists, we don’t all share a common ideology. We’re not all left wing. People can hear you and their disagreement with your analyses does not mean they are silencing you, they just don’t agree with you.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 01/08/2024 13:22

Just to 'educate' everyone on this thread, I was at an official vigil outside the Atkinson on Lord Street Southport promoted by Sefton Council, with the mayor and others speaking and broadcast on the local news. The riot is something totally different that took place a couple of hours later and about 20/30 mins walk away.

VerySadCase · 01/08/2024 13:22

I'm always curious when posters say that they can't see racism when it's right there in front of them.

Is it that they're incredibly stupid and think that it can't be racism if it doesn't contain an explicit racist slur like the n-word or the p-word?

Or is it that they know it is racist and they just don't care because they are really racist themselves, and they actually quite like having the ability to express their racist views in ways that are less likely to get deleted?

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2024 13:24

There are loads of very racist posts still standing so there was something clear cut that led to your deletion. It may just have been the hearsay element and the timing that other posters, and the rioters themselves, said he was an Asian man with a machete and if not for that there would have been no riots. Many posts about the man with the knife were deleted.
