UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new Hidden Gratitude feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 04/09/2023 10:31

Today we’re launching a new feature called Hidden Gratitude. We’ve had many requests over the years for a like button on Mumsnet but shared concerns that some have expressed about it being a bit reductive and possibly turning discussions into a popularity contest.

Nonetheless, we think it would be nice to be able to thank posters for a particularly helpful or generous post. Hidden Gratitude is an easy way to show appreciation but as the name suggests, there will be no publicly visible 'like' count, only the user who has been given thanks can see it.

All you need to do is hit the “thanks” icon on the post you want to appreciate. The poster will receive a notification which will let them know who has “thanked” them. That’s it!

And, before you ask - at the time of writing we have no plans to introduce a hidden ingratitude button…

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet I agree that the quote button needs to be shown alongside the other options underneath posts - perhaps 'save' could be moved to be behind the three dots? I'd imagine that fewer people use that than use the quote function.

Stravaig · 05/09/2023 09:58

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet Have clicked Thanks! Can't see anything change at my end.

LaMarschallin · 05/09/2023 10:04

I've just edited a post and realised that now the "Edit" button is hidden behind the three dots too.
Given that that's a relatively new function, quite a few people don't seem to have noticed it (still see posts to correct other posts done within the timeframe of a potential edit), so hiding it seems counterproductive.

I use Save a lot! Would like to be able to save my own posts too.
Agree that Quote needs to be visible though.
I nominate Share for ritual sacrifice to the three dots.
Also Add Message, in favour of Edit being visible.

BIWI · 05/09/2023 10:06

Fair enough @Stravaig! Yes I agree re share - I'd also lose 'add message' altogether, as it's easy enough to go to the end of a thread to do that.

Yes edit and quote would be much more useful on the bar under each post especially as many people like you've noticed don't seem to know the edit feature exists. Both would be infinitely more useful than the save button and the useless reply button which many people especially new users understably assume is a quote button and will reply to that specific post.

That'll be us iOS users who don't have the option!

Great minds! Was just editing my previous post to add this.

Random789 · 05/09/2023 10:09

I hadn't even noticed Save and Share and Add Message! Would never use any of those, and I do use Quote.
Where is the Reply button? Or is that just the Add Message button?

JaneJeffer · 05/09/2023 10:10

What is save for?

Good point. I'd forgotten that I'd seen some people mentioning that.

I think the name depends on how you use MN. I use it predominantly on my mobile but I don't use the app as its about 10 years behind and has none of the new features. This is how the bar looks on my phone.

Calling it Reply makes it seem like you would be responding to that post it's very misleading.

Whinge · 05/09/2023 10:29

I'm on the website and since MN added the thanks button the 3 dots are at the top of a post, they used to be underneath with the other options. So in order to quote or edit a post I have to scroll back up to the top of a post, which is beyond irritating.

I just don't understand why we can't customise what buttons / features we have under posts. I never use the share, add post or save buttons, so why can't I hide them in the 3 dot menu. Confused

It IS beyond irritating , honestly it can't be that hard to update a website in a user friend fashion, a quite option and a like button is hardly state of the art stuff 😭

Hi all - the quote function has always been behind the three dots menu. What's changed is this menu has moved to the top right of posts.

this is awful - I click on quote, and the pop up does not go away

PLeease put quote / edit / report along the bottom, and move save / bookmark to the drop down

The pop is super irritating as you have to click that away too!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/09/2023 10:48

I don't even know what the point of hidden gratitude is- say thank you on the thread which lots of posters already do or send someone a PM.

LaMarschallin · 05/09/2023 11:11

The idea of it being about "gratitude" seems weird to me. It's quite different from liking something because it's witty or you agree strongly or whatever.

Is it just that the idea of a "like" button - even if the response is hidden - causes such strong reactions in some people?

But that's the point, lots of people won't post. I've already found on a thread that 2 people have posted to disagree with me but a couple of people have thanked me.

JaneJeffer · 05/09/2023 11:16

Yes @LaMarschallin it's just a stealth like button so as not to offend the people who won't win a popularity contest Grin

LaMarschallin · 05/09/2023 11:26

JaneJeffer

I suspected as much Smile

It'll be interesting to see how often people mention getting hidden responses if they're getting a visible pasting.
This doesn't mean you, michalwave, as I quite see your point.

I just think this could get just as divisive as visible "likes" because some people will really want to say how many people agreed; some people might be quite irritated that others agree with them secretly but won't post on a thread, and some people might just lie about responses which they couldn't about visible ones.

I am pretty sure that it wasn’t previously necessary to click the x to remove the pop up before typing your post though?

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet do you have a screenshot of how it used to look? Is the bar of options under each post a newish thing?

Seems like using the quote function had become so automatic I'd not even realised it used to be behind 3 dots!

It is definitely way more faffy now though, and would be better placed in the quick links under each post.

TheOhGodOfHangovers · 05/09/2023 12:17

I have the same issue as @Stravaig - on safari on iPad. All up to date. Clicking away on thanks and no idea if anything is happening or not.

I have clicked thanks on your post asking Stravaig to do the same @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet
