UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new Hidden Gratitude feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 04/09/2023 10:31

Today we’re launching a new feature called Hidden Gratitude. We’ve had many requests over the years for a like button on Mumsnet but shared concerns that some have expressed about it being a bit reductive and possibly turning discussions into a popularity contest.

Nonetheless, we think it would be nice to be able to thank posters for a particularly helpful or generous post. Hidden Gratitude is an easy way to show appreciation but as the name suggests, there will be no publicly visible 'like' count, only the user who has been given thanks can see it.

All you need to do is hit the “thanks” icon on the post you want to appreciate. The poster will receive a notification which will let them know who has “thanked” them. That’s it!

And, before you ask - at the time of writing we have no plans to introduce a hidden ingratitude button…

An upvote/downvote feature like Reddit’s would be more helpful.

Hell no. I've seen it used almost like bullying over there where up/down is given on the basis of who the poster is. Given the complaints of "cliques" and "vipers" on MN it would be horrific.

Agreed.

It just encourages hive-minds and echo chambers.

The quote function seems to have moved to make way for the hidden appreciation, wth is wrong with just a like button like every other website? Makes quoting really clunky now 🙄

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/09/2023 17:44

I can't even see a Quote option now. There's Reply but that doesn't bring the specific post with you into your comment.

You have to do it via the 3 dots which is a PiTA and a backwards step imo.

i don’t see the point of the reply button so quote would be better there.

You have to click the 3 dots.

Then pick quote from the menu.

Then click X to remove the menu from blocking the text box.

Then you can write your post.

Somewhat faffy for such a widely used function.

Not pleased at losing 'quote' from the easily accessible features in favour of this not very valuable new feature.

Wiii · 04/09/2023 18:26

Mine hasn't got this at all

Hobnobswantshernameback · 04/09/2023 20:08

So the search function is utterly shite and you refuse to fix it but hey have some pointless add on that nobody wanted

WhatapityWapiti · 04/09/2023 20:13

I would suggest replacing “Reply” with “quote”. We already have “Add post” at the bottom of the screen which does exactly the same thing as “Reply” and, to the uninitiated, “Reply” would suggest that it is a way of replying directly to that specific post, (by quoting it) rather than just adding a post to the thread.

WhatapityWapiti · 04/09/2023 20:16

I other words, when we had both “Reply” and “Quote” as options it was obvious that “Reply” did not create a quote. But now that “Quote” is not an obvious second option, it’s confusing. And I agree that “quote” is too useful to hide away behind the ellipsis (not to mention the new ballache of having to close the box before you can post).

Barbiesback · 04/09/2023 20:19

I don't like the feature. MN should be informative and a debate. I don't think it needs to be like IG or FB liking things.

But that’s the beauty of it- those who want such a feature can use it, those who don’t care can ignore it and won’t even know it’s there.

Edited

Since advanced search was reinstated it's not that bad, and not that dissimilar to old advanced search.

BIWI · 04/09/2023 23:18

I was very against the idea of a 'like' button - but I think the idea of a) it being hidden and b) being called 'thanks' is very good, as @Random789 has already outlined.

But I have noticed that despite receiving thanks on several threads today, I haven't had any notifications of this. (I've checked my settings, and they are set to receive notifications). So at the moment I'd only know I'd been thanked if I was reading my previous posts on a thread.

(Mac/Safari/Desktop before you ask!)

⬆️that is how I have to quote as the ellipses dont work for me (safari/iOS 13.7)

DoAWheelie · 05/09/2023 00:02

I'm not a fan of it showing my name off - I'd rather have it be anonymous.

ToastyCrumpets · 05/09/2023 00:10

I want the easy access quote button back somewhere please. Don’t really care about the thanks. And never use the save or share buttons.

Stravaig · 05/09/2023 07:35

@MNHQ I can receive thanks, but not give it!

Nothing happens when I press the button, it doesn't seem to register or change the icon in any way, so I don't know if people are receiving my appreciation, I assume not. (I use MN in website form, via Safari on iOS.)

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 05/09/2023 09:39

@Stravaig could you please thank this post and I'll check?

Hi all - the quote function has always been behind the three dots menu. What's changed is this menu has moved to the top right of posts.

please put it back

its awful where it is

you have to click on 3 dots
then on quote
and then close the pop up window!!!

KitchenSinkLlama · 05/09/2023 09:51

Why don't you improve the functionality of the app first. This is how most people access sites - particularly as most people use their phone rather than a laptop for day to day browsing.

You seem stuck in the early 2000's MN.

JaneJeffer · 05/09/2023 09:52

I'd quite like to be back in the early 2000's @KitchenSinkLlama Sad
