UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new Hidden Gratitude feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 04/09/2023 10:31

Today we’re launching a new feature called Hidden Gratitude. We’ve had many requests over the years for a like button on Mumsnet but shared concerns that some have expressed about it being a bit reductive and possibly turning discussions into a popularity contest.

Nonetheless, we think it would be nice to be able to thank posters for a particularly helpful or generous post. Hidden Gratitude is an easy way to show appreciation but as the name suggests, there will be no publicly visible 'like' count, only the user who has been given thanks can see it.

All you need to do is hit the “thanks” icon on the post you want to appreciate. The poster will receive a notification which will let them know who has “thanked” them. That’s it!

And, before you ask - at the time of writing we have no plans to introduce a hidden ingratitude button…

I don't mind the idea but I do think labelling it "thanks" is a little weird. When I read a great post on MN, a hidden "like" would be more appropriate as I like the message and think the poster made great points but they haven't done anything for me that requires a thanks IYSWIM.

Sirzy · 04/09/2023 11:06

It’s a shame we have lost the quote button to get this. That would be much more useful.

The quote button's still where it was for me?

I've still got the quote button (on app). But no 'thank you' button.

But I'm literally telling you how I would feel.

It would be disheartening to share deeply emotive things to support people on here, then be met with crickets.

I think on balance people who share deeply emotive thanks will get quite a few thanks.

Look at the hundreds of responses when someone posts something positive like my child said mum for the first time, or a positive pregnancy result or someone's child doing really well in exams.

Yes, removing the report button would have made more sense. Or not having a stealth like button at all.

GarlicGrace · 04/09/2023 11:11

I like it. I often want to 'like' a post but not extend the thread by adding yet another agreement to an already tedious string of same.

On the website, quotes have moved to the three-dot dropdown at top right of the post, @Sirzy.

It is there above your post, the 3 dots.

Yes, I realise that, but it now takes 3 times as long to quote a post, something most people will do more often than they will report threads.

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/09/2023 11:12

Which means you have to scroll up to find it. The most useful thing on here and it is hidden away. Whereas a gratuitous hidden pretend 'like' button just gets in the way.
Please MN could you arrange things in some kind of order of usefulness?

michalwave · 04/09/2023 11:17

The quote button was quite glitchy, often I would hit quote but it wouldn't quote the post or just take me to the post again, meaning I'd have to hit quote again.

I wonder if moving the quote button to behind the 3 dots has made it less glitchy.

Given the barrage of (now deleted) posts last night, I absolutely think the report button is important and commonly used. If anything, it's the save/share button that sees the least use imo.

michalwave · 04/09/2023 11:19

I agree with Connoisseur, the report button should stay where it is.

I never use the 'Add message' or Share buttons.

BananaBender · 04/09/2023 11:19

I like it. I’m constantly wanting to “like” posts on here but couldn’t.

Another forum I’m on introduced like and other reactions a few years ago. Initially I was against it but now I really like it.

WhatapityWapiti · 04/09/2023 11:20

Hello. I like this, thank you. Could someone in this thread please be a dear and thank me for this post? I’d like to check that my email notifications are off and see what a “thanks count” looks like on my post, but I have absolutely nothing thanksworthy to add to any actual threads at this time on a Monday morning.

Though I do have a kitchen tip - buy an emulsifying whisk, they are a game changer!

Fair point!

Maybe quote could replace the reply button then?

I know but I don’t get the logic. Of all the options under the posts quote is surely going to be one of the most commonly used ones? And one of the most useful for understanding the flow of a conversation sometimes. Why hide that one away?

I'm feeling conflicted as the troll who caused mayhem last night is now NightTroll and has liked lots of my posts! Shock

I agree with this - some posts are really funny or well argued or informative. I might want to appreciate them but "Thank you" doesn't always seem appropriate.

WhoPutCrabsticksInMyBedroom · 04/09/2023 11:23

I'm with the first poster.

But agree Thanks is weird. Agree would be better.

Yarnysaurus · 04/09/2023 11:20

Agreed, I’ve literally never used the reply button, I just scroll to the bottom if I’m replying without quoting something. I also think having reply there without quote will lead to confusion about what the reply button does.

TeaAndStrumpets · 04/09/2023 11:25

There should be a button that says "I read your post and rolled my eyes, but out of common courtesy I refrained from replying."

WhatapityWapiti · 04/09/2023 11:25

KevinAndHerKits · 04/09/2023 11:22

But you’re thanking them for making you laugh or see something in a different way, are you not? I think “thanks” covers all bases really.

And thanks to the test thankers who thanked me for my earlier post!

KevinAndHerKits · 04/09/2023 11:26

Yarnysaurus · 04/09/2023 11:20

I agree. Especially because Quote has now disappeared from view, it's not intuitively obvious what Reply does. Having Reply so obvious is also an invitation for people to skip most of the thread and just post immediately without finding out that the cheque has already been paid and cannot be cancelled, which is high on a lot of people's list of things that annoy them.

nettie434 · 04/09/2023 11:32

I like this feature. My only worry is that because I couldn't see if the thanks feature has worked, I might have sent someone lots of thanks unintentionally as I was expecting something to say the thanks had gone.
