'wallowing in someone else's grief for no helpful purpose'

exactly. That's what makes me want to pull my toenails out.

(note still no helpful tips for RL ghouls other than screaming banshee violence)

pagwatch · 10/09/2007 14:05

Exactly - tried to post in moderate terms or to disagree with tone and content but any reasonable expressions get totally ignored. Find some of the comments beyond vile but I became frustrated that ignoring did make it all go unchallenged and the more vociferous posters were starting to feel that they had a moral majority.
I am relatively new but have stopped telling friends about mumsnet - too . This thread is a blessing.

donnie · 10/09/2007 14:29

is haychee actually wolfgirl?

also, forgive me if this has already been posted today but everyone should read Max Hasting's piece in today's Guardian and then shut up on this subject forevermore.FFS.

Hi BecauseImWorthIt,
There's something called Fair Use in copyright law - which allows published work can be selectively quoted. See here.

But thinking about it, we should perhaps drop the Guardian Reader's Editor a line and suggest their quotes were not representative...

donnie · 10/09/2007 14:34

yes Justine - do it.

ruty · 10/09/2007 14:41

yes please Justine.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 10/09/2007 14:51

Yes please Justine.

I might write to the guardian meself actually, as well

AbRoller · 10/09/2007 15:45

Well I don't know where I fit in so I'm not signing in case I'm not allowed having already posted on several mm threads but this is how I feel....

This is not a parenting website as far as I know (don't mind being corrected) but a website for parents. Being a parent is not the only role we serve in our existance(sp?), we are also partners, friends, sisters, colleagues etc so to limit our conversations to parenting topics only would see a lot of people leaving IMO.

There are many things discussed here that have nothing to do with parenting...the bumsex thread for instance(last time I checked, that's the wrong hole if you want to become a parent!). Lots of people had no problem chatting on that thread however others found it distasteful and made their feelings known on the thread. Fine.

The bullshit over the last few days has been unreal....Yes you have a right to discuss whatever you want but you can't whinge like a twat when someone comes along and says they don't like it. If you have the right to discuss, others have the right to make their objections known and in light of the very sad situation on which all this is based it is not surprising many people felt it unnecessary and saddening that the discussion turned into a witch hunt.

The constant, repetitive drivel of one or two became a discussion not about the original topic but about oneupmanship, winning ffs! Whilst I'm all for free speech I am bemused by MNHQ's decission(sp?) to wrist slap only one side. Surely if free speech is allowed then it is allowed for all?

I have no problem with people wanting to discuss whatever they want on here but I can choose to join in or let my abhorrance be known whatever the case may be can I not?

I don't mind the recent threads about what's in the news, it is after all in the news and a topic heading in the list above but I do mind the morbid and upsetting content in the face of absolutely NO FUCKING EVIDENCE just speculation and speculation that seems to arouse a sick satisfaction for some.

I have huge interest in forensic science and I like to read non-fiction crime but only that which has been proven. Nothing has been proven in the MMC search and yet people are talking about a body and how it could be disposed of - that's disgusting and very very sad. No more searching for a little girl who has gone missing just a hunger for gossip and a hunt for a scapegoat.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 10/09/2007 15:54

Of course you can sign Abs.

I've posted on some of the MM threads (in the same manner you have).

I've added my name because I want to disassociate myself from the more extreme postings, and to show my support to aitch and MB, who feel that their tacitness has, up until now, gone unnoticed. It has been a case of actions havent spoken louder than words until now.

have cut and pasted after reading the opening comments. I am guessing this is a thread to demonstrate to journo types who quote from here that we aren't a bunch of mis-informed, gory-seeking sickos??
I have too posted on McCann threads, but have avoided the posts/threads from the idle and bored. Bit like just stepping round dog poo.

Blandmum · 10/09/2007 16:11

haychee you asked me the following. your comments are in '' and mine come after, for ease I'm broken it up into chunks

'By haychee on Sun 09-Sep-07 22:42:32
Its discovering others views opinions and thoughts on an issue close to all our hearts. I wanted to explore it further because my dh is against them and i am for them. '

How many times do people really need to read 'I think they did it' or 'I disagree'. If your dh already disagreesm, you already get that debate at home. How much real information, as opposed to speculation do you need?

'It doesnt do anybody any good i agree, but is worthy of discussing given light of the recent developments.'

What is worthy of discussion/ Nothing has been proved?

' It is all about a mum accused of harming her own child, on a parents website it seems perfectly reasonable to be discussed here. '

But what possible help can there be to anyone on this board by speculating the means by which the potential 'deed' could have been done? We don't even know what, if anything was 'done'. Who does it help....no-one? If you want to solve crimes play cludo, don't play mind games over a real life situation which has the potential to hurt real life people.

'I do agree the detialing to such a degree was disgusting, but then there alot of news events that are disgusting, but we cant control that. Unfortunately none of us know what has exactly happened, hopefully time will tell us all. But my view is, that nothing is impossible, anything may of happened. It may turn out they are guilty, what do any of us know for sure - nothing!'

But the fact that people can be disgusting is hardly new! Who needs to be reminded that people can be vile? How does that help the family and friends of this poor child, or the police or anyone? And I didn't notice any of the posters on that thread who were 'pro' discussion complaining over the vileness, everone who was pro was having a fine old time. There wew some note worthy exceptions like MalloryTowers and MaEdam, and they were being slapped down my the Ghouls.

'I want to apologise again as i always do, i was involved in the thread yesterday and allowed the hideous descriptions to pass me by. I was furious over the "poopants" incident and the bumping that ensued. I had had a drink (small but very effective as im useless at drinking) and i said somethings that im now ashamed of. It appears MB that you are infact a well grounded person who has alot of respect on here. Therefore, i am a little astounded that you havnt been aboe to hear me correctly all day & night. '

well that is all well and good, but to be quite honest I don't give a shit how long people have been posting, if they act like an arse, they are acting like an arse. This isn;t about newbies and old hands (much as some people would like to paint it that way) You shouldn't have slapped anyone down as you did me, new or old poster

'I think you are doing the right thing, you wanted it known, that you all disapproved at the highest level and were told you could not sabotage threads the way that one was. This thread has done what you wanted it to. You have disassociated yourselves form the mm threads as you do not want to be percieved as having them same hideous views.

I however, strongly believe there is no good that can come from burying your head in the sand. Life is full of grim twists and turns, none of us like it but thats the way it is.'

Well I'm glad you think this was the right thing for me to do, its nice that we agree on something. you didn't seem to thank that in your earlier posts on this thread

But one point should be made clear. none of us are burying our heads in the sand, we are all aware of what is happenening in this case, how could anyone with ears or eyes not know? But there is a world of a difference between knowing what is happeneing and wallowing in shit.

I think that at best your championing of these threads is misguded; your gloating about having 'won' was one of the least palitable things I've seen a poster do, you lacked style IMHO. And if you dine with the devil, take a loooooooooooooong spoon. Those posters were vile and had wallowed in the shit, I'd make sure none of it rubbed off on you, if I were you.

morningpaper · 10/09/2007 16:15

I've felt from the beginning that the McCann thing brings out such AWFUL sides in people (including me) that we should have asked people to avoid anything apart from speculation... I know it's natural to want to discuss it on a parenting site, but the stuff that is being written here about it is EXACTLY the same as the stuff being written about it on the Daily Mirror talkboards. Speculation about tabloid gossip seems to anti-what MN is about, I think it would have probably been an awful precedent but none of us (including me again) are really grown-up enough to discuss it (if anything needs to be discussed) in a mature and reasonable manner.

morningpaper · 10/09/2007 16:16

avoid anything APART from speculation FFS

I mean avoid anything that is touching on speculation

thank goodness someone is saying what I've been thinking.

Thank you aitch etc for saying what I have been feeling so well.
I have refused to read any threads, as I hear enough on the news in the morning to let me know what is going on, and refuse to enter into the whole media circus that has come about from something so utterly terrible.

Please can I sign up? Very late in the day. I am quite new to MN and found last Friday's MM thread eye-poppingly awful to read. People need to step back from the PC and go and do something else, frankly. It was the worst kind of distasteful ghoulish tittle-tattle imaginable. Thanks for this thread.

SpacePuppy · 10/09/2007 16:38

Spacepuppy

To be honest I've stepped away from this site for some time because of the trend of discussing other people, which I don't know and to be honest did not contribute to enriching myself whatsoever. I've been back for 2 weeks now, but am not sure if it is worth it.

I leave you with this:

"Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people."
-- Eleanor Roosevelt
