Weird behaviour with "back" button in browser - anyone else?

BertieBotts · 04/01/2018 21:45

Over the last few days I've noticed if I'm browsing Active, I'm On or a talk topic and click onto a thread from there, when I press back to return to the list of threads afterwards, it often seems to skip that page and go straight to whatever thread I was reading before that, which is very odd. It doesn't happen every time, but enough for me to notice. I have thought maybe I've clicked back twice by mistake and gone forward again, but it's like the interim page is just deleted from my history as though I never visited it at all.

Is anyone else getting this? It's really strange and disorientating.

I'm on Chrome on Windows 10 on a desktop.

Yep, still happening.

ThePants999 · 22/05/2018 12:51

Happens to me both on mobile Chrome and desktop Chrome.

To confirm, it's pretty much random. I just tried the following:

  1. Go to external site
  2. Follow bookmark to AIBU
  3. Click a thread
  4. Click back

then repeated 3 and 4 with exactly the same thread. On the 7th click of Back, it skipped back to the external site.

I find it very surprising that tech are unable to repro this...

HopeMumsnet · 22/05/2018 13:44

Hi there all,
We're really sorry for the delay in fixing this. What we are hearing is that the only way to move forward with this would be if a lovely London-based MNer would be willing to help by having someone from our Tech team visit and observe them produce the problem on their device. So we're looking for a volunteer, basically... our Techs are all fully house-trained and non-biting if that helps?

PositiveAttitude · 22/05/2018 16:51

I live on the Isle of Wight. Anyone fancy a trip down here?

PositiveAttitude · 23/05/2018 15:08

Come on you lot can we help to get this sorted for all our sanities???!!! Do any of you live closer to London than me?

Tanaqui · 23/05/2018 15:10

I’m in the SE but not London- it is happeneing less, but surely if tech just spend a morning mumsnetting it will happen to one of them?! It’s as if the swipe back can’t tell the difference between one page and two!

Itlante · 23/05/2018 17:47

I don't live in London either unfortunately, but as Tanaqui said, has someone in the tech dept tried spending a morning on MN on their phone? I tried MN on my DH's phone, and it did the same thing, so it must be happening for quite a few people.

CaptainHammer · 23/05/2018 18:03

I’m South but not London either. Agree with Tanaqui/Itlante, I’d have thought tech could see it happening if they spent some time on it.

PiggeryPorcombe · 23/05/2018 18:04

I’m nowhere near London but agree that someone at mnhq just needs to spend all morning on the mobile site and it’s bound to happen.

PositiveAttitude · 23/05/2018 20:18

Its not just the mobile site, either. I am on laptop and it has been happening a lot...... sometimes a lot more than others. There is certainly no pattern to it.

nothingwittyhere · 25/05/2018 21:50

Could this be something to do with the time it takes the webpage to fully load? Eg when I open up a MN topic page it takes longer for the page to fully load than it does for all the threads to display. If I don't "stop" the page loading (clicking on the X in the three dots settings menu) then I get skipping when I try to go back to the topic listing. It's like if I leave the topic listing before it fully loaded it doesn't form part of my history so Back takes me to the page before that? Probably not being very clear! But if that's a factor then someone with fast Internet connection might not experience this?

yawning801 · 31/05/2018 14:44

Still happening for me after about six months... seriously no way around it without going to see a MN-er in action?

PiggeryPorcombe · 31/05/2018 20:25

Yeah still happening here too.

MsHomeSlice · 31/05/2018 20:31

are you going to visit everyone? what a lot of malarkey!

It's still going on with me too, if anything maybe a little less, but when it does it is definitely jumping more pages at once, not consistent

I thought it jumped back to a thread I had not even clicked on the other day, but I cannot be certain as it is so random and inconsistent!

nothingwittyhere · 01/06/2018 10:52

It does it if I don't stop the webpage loading; it stops happening when I force-stop loading the page. I think it happens more on the topic thread pages because of the extra advertising they contain.

Sidge · 01/06/2018 16:46

Still happening....

Despite me using different computers, as well as an iPad. Different browsers - Safari, Chrome.

Leaping around between all different pages, not necessarily the one before.

Catzpyjamas · 01/06/2018 22:28

Happening again for the last few days after being ok for weeks.

ILoveMyDressingGown · 02/06/2018 17:55

This has just happened three times on the trot!

ThatIsNachoCheese · 03/06/2018 03:17

I had a break from mumsnet as this was going my bloody head in so much.
I've come back and I can't believe it's still happening.
Someone needs to spend 1 hour going on active, clicking on a thread and then going back. Keep doing it and it will happen. How has this not been sorted yet?!
I think it's the adverts and them taking too long to load.
Please please please sort it out!

FlissMumsnet · 03/06/2018 20:49

We're so sorry this is such a pita for you all - we genuninely can't seen to replicate the problem so it's hard for Tech to know where the problem stems from.

Any Londoners up for a visit from MNHQ Tech? We'll make them bring their own biscuits....

MsHomeSlice · 03/06/2018 21:48

Nacho..i have the ad blocker and it still does it.

Honestly cannot see why no one at HQ can find out about this...so many people affected yet it cannot be replicated?

MN has always been slow to load ACTiVE so that's why I use the back button, as it is usually quicker I presume similar motivations for the others.

Identify a couple of threads to read, click one, read it, go back select the next, and so on until I've gone through anything that catches my eye then click ACTIVE again, but obv with this glitch it tends to miss out the original load of the ACTIVE page and just to and fro between random threads you have already looked at.

ShowOfHands · 04/06/2018 15:54

I haven't had a problem for a few weeks but it's back to doing it again. I can't use the search function because I read a selected thread from the results and when I click back to read more results, I go back to the search page. Click forward and it skips to the thread I've just read. And repeat ad nauseam.

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 12/06/2018 16:11

It got worse over the weekend and its still happening again today, but intermittently.

I'm using a variety of platforms:
iOS 11.3.1 with Safari on ipad - desktop site
Windows 10, Chrome v 66.0.3359.181 on laptop - deskptop site

ThatIsNachoCheese · 19/06/2018 01:25

Still it continues...

crabb · 19/06/2018 01:30

Happy for you to visit me in Canberra... still happening.
