For the love of the wee man please do something about the ads

HQ. Please. Make a decision about the ads. Either make them less intrusive or give us an option to pay a sub and get rid of them.

I'm on laptop, mobile on phone and sometimes Ipad. They make the site unusable and I'm going to be investigating an adblock today.

I am sure that is not what you want - I understand the need for ads to generate revenue, but when they are so intrusive that they interfere with the ability to use the site then you've gone a bit too far in the wrong direction.

Also, I wouldn't buy anything that is advertised like that, in an intrusive ad that pisses me off, because instead of thinking fluffy warm thoughts about the product being advertised, I'm thinking "FUCK THE FUCK OFF YOU ANNOYING TWAT" which I am sure is not the intention of the advertiser.

The most effective way to deal with the ad in the middle of threads is to scroll past it? Cor hq, you could say the most effective way to deal with it would be to click on the x in the top corner of the page and sign off from mumsnet if that's what you think about user experience.

unavita · 24/05/2017 12:35

my eyelashes have fallen off 😕

unavita · 24/05/2017 12:35

Ah soz not ad related 😳

OR IS IT

WomblingThree · 24/05/2017 12:40

Can someone technical explain how ads for American companies make MN any money. If I see an advert for swimming pools or an airport hotel in California, there's zero chance I'm going to click on it, so what's the point?

Stormtreader · 24/05/2017 12:48

I assume its because the companies are paying per advert shown, not paying on clickthrough.

Unfortunately MN are shooting themselves in the foot - there is a maximum amount of annoyance users will tolerate before they decide its too much, people are already getting to that point by installing adblockers and not using the site from their phone. These people generate zero revenue.

The solution is to either adjust back to a reasonable level, or to continue escalating to try and mitigate the losses, which leads to more people blocking, which leads to more escalation....

Thanks, I didn't think of that Grin

LineysRun · 24/05/2017 12:52

I sense we are being told to get tae fuck, if I'm being honest

unavita · 24/05/2017 12:53

It's creepily well tailored, not random ads, am flying from Gatwick to Oakland and was looking at car hire.

For the love of the wee man please do something about the ads
LineysRun · 24/05/2017 13:12

Was just reading a very emotional mid-thread post from a woman about her crippling depression. The huge mid-thread advert directly underneath of a grinning man selling tat was a tad jarring.

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 24/05/2017 13:32

I sense we are being told to get tae fuck,
yes this sadly Sad
and saying "Mwah ha ha ha - we could put bigger even more intrusive adverts on the site though" ..really, really misses the point.

Snap8TheCat · 24/05/2017 13:53

I said they wouldn't care. Seen and been on too many of these threads.

DryHeave · 24/05/2017 14:17

What I don't get is that every link is skimmed, there's massive ads, every hosted web chat and product review programme is expensive (I've seen the rate card).

I would understand if Mumsnet said "yeah, we're a business and we want to make a tasty profit". That'd be fine and then people would not feel guilty insttalling AdBlockers. But to act like it's all just covering costs seems disingenuous.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 24/05/2017 14:31

@AmIAWeed I think I love you!

My screen atm...

AmIAWeed · 24/05/2017 14:48

AllRoads I love you to
Your screen looks terrible - it's hard enough to follow an enlarged page but impossible when content is overlapping like that.

On the bright side, Google get it. In February they announced a change in ranking that means companies who insist on pop ups and annoying ads wont rank as well. Yay Google webmasters.googleblog.com/2016/08/helping-users-easily-access-content-on.html

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 24/05/2017 14:56

Oh, I'm on a GS7.

lucydogz · 24/05/2017 14:59

Anyone else find it odd that mn post several times to say 'what are you talking about' and asking for screen shots. Then it's like ' oh, THOSE ads. Suck it up ladies, and, while you're at it, take a flying jump'.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 24/05/2017 15:01

it's not nearly so bad if you use the desktop site on your mobile - I'm only getting the top banner, and the ads in boxes at the right hand side. Plus if you scroll the screen a bit, you can't see any of them.

Am using an adblocker on the PC though, as the skim links really annoyed me.

brexitstolemyfuture · 24/05/2017 15:05

But to act like it's all just covering costs seems disingenuous.

Totally agree. They make a fortune on basically a message board.

I do think they have high outgoings, but most of the content they create isn't anything unique or good and they are reliant on people volenteering.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 24/05/2017 15:06

Can someone explain the increased use of data to this dumbass please? Will it affect me using my wifi at home?

LineysRun · 24/05/2017 15:11

AllRoads, some phone contracts have data limits, so when you're not connected to WiFi, you have a set amount of G3 or G4 access. Or summat.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 24/05/2017 15:17

Oh phew! Thank you!

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 24/05/2017 15:19

On the bright side, I can explore Ironbrisge museams, apparantly! Or "see what I can study"! Think google have picked up on the VI comment and are doing a sadistic Jim Bowen on me? "Now let's look at what you COULD have seen-" 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Highalert · 24/05/2017 15:20

I never thought of scrolling past the big fuck off Ad in the middle of the page.

MN gets more and more like a click bait Advertisement site every day.

AmIAWeed · 24/05/2017 15:22

LineysRun is right, most home WiFi doesn't have a cap, but mobile data providers do. Rich content, so videos, images, ads that flash and change take up more data to download - made worse by videos auto starting! For this reason someone may come to Mumsnet to read that chat text and it uses the same data as streaming a YouTube video or Netflix for example because of the ads on the page
