Update to webchat guest colours

Hi,
This is a heads up that we're soon to introduce a change to the colours used to highlight posts on desktop and mobile.

If you've been around long enough to have the old style customised colours this won't affect you.

For newer users - we needed to add some new web chat guest colours and retire the awful mustard yellow we used in the past on desktop webchats. As a result of that we then needed to update our other colours too.

Thanks all

Thanks!

Powaqa · 13/10/2016 13:56

All my colours are correct on my home PC (Chrome) . Green for Op. Grey for me and Blue for Mumsnet BUT here on my work laptop (using IE) the Mumsnet blue is so washed out as to appear hardly any different from the other posts

I actually read BuzzFeed all last night instead as I couldn't bear the colours in the dark. I can't read desktop on my phone so mumsnet will be limited to when I'm at computer until this is changed back.

Can this please be be directly answered:

Why can't the webchat colours be changed and we still keep custom colours? Why is it one or the other?

Wistful bump. My original custom colours are working fine on the desktop site, but the mobile site is horrific [sax]

GinIsIn · 14/10/2016 15:29

How much longer are the stupid pale pastels going to stick around for? We aren't moaning because we've lost our fancy colour schemes like some kind of flouncing Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, just trying to point out that we CAN'T SEE and that makes the site pretty pointless. Please MN can you just darken the colours so they're actually visible?!

KatherineMumsnet · 14/10/2016 16:41

Hi again, everyone.

The reason why we can't change some colours and not others is because tech would have to spend an awful lot of time maintaining different customisation for mobile, desktop and app. A huge chunk of tech resources would then have to go into checking it all, when they could be building and fixing elsewhere. In an ideal world, they'd all be the same but appreciate getting it right for all with a one-size-fits all is hard and this release ain't that.

That being said - we are going to switch to a darker set of colours (HOORAY). Before we finalise, we'd like to hear your feedback.

Please could you all click on this link, which will take you to a mock-up of the current pale colours next to a darker set. If you then click or tap the bit at the bottom which lists the colours, you can toggle between them.

Hope that makes sense, please do let us know what you think!

Queenbean · 14/10/2016 16:46

The stronger colours are definitely better

BUT

There is quite a range in how strong the colours are just on the "stronger" palette. Please use the ones at the top for main colours and the very strong ones at the bottom for guest posts only

Thank you

Regards

MrsHathaway · 14/10/2016 16:46

The darker colours are definitely better. You can see them even when scrolling briskly.

Thank you for paying attention to our needs!

Queenbean · 14/10/2016 16:46

Ha ha. Forgot I wasn't writing a work email.

Woops. Sorry.

MrsHathaway · 14/10/2016 16:47

That's a point - the special guest colours are very similar to the OP/self/MNHQ colours.

How often do you have more than one guest at a time?

MrsHathaway · 14/10/2016 16:48

"Regards", Queen? You must be livid.

Soubriquet · 14/10/2016 16:48

Yes. Those colours are a lot better

emotionsecho · 14/10/2016 16:49

The dark colours on the first screen would be my choice.

Soubriquet · 14/10/2016 16:49

Just checking that you are aware there are more colours that exist right? Grin

Not just green, orange, blue and purple

Catzpyjamas · 14/10/2016 16:50

I agree with Queenbean. For everyday posts we need the deeper colours.

Please don't make me pink though Hmm!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/10/2016 16:50

The reason why we can't change some colours and not others is because tech would have to spend an awful lot of time maintaining different customisation for mobile, desktop and app.

But, but, but!

I used to have custom colours that were the same across desktop and mobile app. Now I only have desktop colours. All I want is the same (original) colours on desktop and mobile.

I don't think anyone is asking for.different colours on different platforms - surely it is just a matter of changing the stylesheets.

HerSpookyFattyness · 14/10/2016 17:00

The darker colours are better but I miss my colours Sad

Queenbean · 14/10/2016 17:01

I've just come from quite a terse design meeting so yes!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/10/2016 17:12

Those darker colours are better but could you swap around special guest 4 and OP? Grin

SpookyPotato · 14/10/2016 17:18

The darkness is better but the colours are naff.

Didijustgetwinkpointshitcanned · 14/10/2016 17:27

Link won't work for me :(
