New member profile facility

Hello all,

We've added a function to Mumsnset so that you can set up a page about yourself that other people will eventually be able to see when they click your name on Talk. We figured this would work more easiliy better than starting a "member profile" thread, though you can of course still do that if you want to. If you go to the "my registration" link above you can get started from there if you'd like to set up a profile. This is of course totally optional, and only for those as want to do it. A number of people have expressed an interest in being able to do that over the months. If you do want to, remember you can answer as many or as few of the questions as you like.

You can set your profile to be "private" so only you can see it, or visible to all mumsnetters. There's also an intermediate level "Mumsnet mates" that lets you choose who can see it. You can set up a list of "mates" by following the "Mumsnet mates" link and typing their talk names into a box.

You can also set up a photo gallery for any pictures you'd to share with other Mumsnetters. For the moment, you can set these to be either public (any registered Mumsnetter could see them) or private to you. We'll add the intermediate level to them over the next day or so.

Anyway, take a look and, as ever, tell us what you think. It's still a work in progress, so we'd appreciate input on what people think works and what doesn't.

I've set up a sample page about me (must be mad). You can see it here .

Best wishes,
Tech

I cant tell you how pleased I am that someone is worse than me with technology. And I mean that in the nicest way DG

sandcastles · 18/01/2007 12:29

right, it wont appear as a usable file on your desktop or menu.

Go into your pictures
highlight a pic
right click
in the menu that appears you should see Resize pictures (is 4th on my menu)
click on this
you will get a box with diff resize options
Click advanced
custom
Enter your dimentions in each of the boxes
(I used 200 x 200)
It will resize & copy IT WILL NOT AFFECT THE ORIGINAL COPY
Use the new pic which will have the same name, but the word CUSTOM after it for MNet

sandcastles · 18/01/2007 12:31

I found small was still too big. So O played around & the custom 200x200 works a treat.

DumbledoresGirl · 18/01/2007 12:31

Thanks all - especially for Kezza's accolade of being worse with technology than you!

I have finally got a picture up. Please look at it and enjoy it - just to make the effort of the last half hour worthwhile!

princessmel · 18/01/2007 12:32

Yeay, you did it! Well done.

It looks the same sort of day as today.

DumbledoresGirl · 18/01/2007 12:33

It was much worse, believe me!

CanStarveWillStarve · 18/01/2007 14:19

TECH - I've been asking the same question since yesterday, but you keep ignoring me . What happens if we change our name and do want our profile to come with us. How do we do that?

Tech · 18/01/2007 14:28

Hello CanStarveWillStarve, The short answer unfortunately is that you are out of luck. Having said that, we'll look at adding that option to the edit page. Shouldn't be a big deal to do.

Thank you tech. You're a very nice man, despite what others say .

uwila · 18/01/2007 14:53

Hey! In tech's defense I think he did answer this yesterday.

What the point of changing your name if your profile is to follow you????

DumbledoresGirl · 18/01/2007 14:59

Of course, if we are going to be really picky, I would say that the problem with this facility is that you post pictures and get no feedback so you have no idea if anyone has seen them yet. So it would be nice to have the ability to respond to people's profiles and say things like "Oh what a gorgeous family you have!" or "Gosh I never knew you lived in x-shire, so do I, let's meet up!" Comments would have to be attributable, and anyone writing rude things could be reported and hopefully banned!

CanStarveWillStarve · 18/01/2007 15:14

Uwila - I regularly change my name. I'm best known as CantSleepWontSleep, but like to vary it a bit (always keeping the initials CSWS) depending on what dd's issues of the day are! Just think about Halloween and Christmas time when most of us change names - we'd all lose our profiles then.

CanStarveWillStarve · 18/01/2007 15:15

DG - they'll be able to do that via the CAT/CAM facility that tech said he'll put a link to on the profile page.

uwila · 18/01/2007 15:38

Isn't multiple personalities a form of schitzaphrenia (probably spelled that wrong)

CanStarveWillStarve · 18/01/2007 15:49

You talking to me?

Or me?

No, it must be me.

uwila · 18/01/2007 16:07

I'm talking to all of you.

KTeePee · 18/01/2007 17:15

Don't know if this has already been mentioned but I am concerned about the new version of "My Registration". There is a bit now where your post code is entered and people can see which other MNetters are in their area - but it defaults to allow this rather than being something you can agree to - and it doesn't seem to let you not allow it...

Personally I think this is not on - I don't necessarily want people to know where I live and perhaps then be able to work out who I am in RL.

Anybody else feel the same?

KTeePee · 18/01/2007 17:27

Has no-one else noticed this then?

saltire · 18/01/2007 17:29

I can't figure out how to do the children bit. I just want it to say that i have children, not their names or ages, but it seems to have defaulted to " has no children" and i cannot figure out how to change

DumbledoresGirl · 18/01/2007 17:41

I don't want to appear stalkerish, but I did notice your childless status yesterday saltire, and was a bit surprised by it!

DumbledoresGirl · 18/01/2007 17:43

KTeePee, I haven't tried registering as I am registered already (obviously!) but I would not be happy to be obliged to reveal my postcode.

Hi KTeePee,
You don't have to enter anything for postcode and even if you do there is a make visible - yes or no - option.
The aim ultimately is to allow members to find each other locally so long as they wish to be found and to provide local area info (eg attractions, events etc) Providing your postcode will mean that you'll be able to see the stuff relevant to you and not all the other stuff. As ever, though, it's opt-in, you can opt out at any time and as per our privacy policy, we would never, ever pass any of this info on to any third party.
Hope that reassures you,
Best,
MNHQ

JustineMumsnet · 18/01/2007 17:46

Saltire - will alert tech!

saltire · 18/01/2007 18:00

Thanks Justine.
It's ok DG, i don't think you're stalkerish at all. I must admit to clicking on a few names, just to see what people have said, some are quite funny.
