Hello all,

We've added a function to Mumsnset so that you can set up a page about yourself that other people will eventually be able to see when they click your name on Talk. We figured this would work more easiliy better than starting a "member profile" thread, though you can of course still do that if you want to. If you go to the "my registration" link above you can get started from there if you'd like to set up a profile. This is of course totally optional, and only for those as want to do it. A number of people have expressed an interest in being able to do that over the months. If you do want to, remember you can answer as many or as few of the questions as you like.

You can set your profile to be "private" so only you can see it, or visible to all mumsnetters. There's also an intermediate level "Mumsnet mates" that lets you choose who can see it. You can set up a list of "mates" by following the "Mumsnet mates" link and typing their talk names into a box.

You can also set up a photo gallery for any pictures you'd to share with other Mumsnetters. For the moment, you can set these to be either public (any registered Mumsnetter could see them) or private to you. We'll add the intermediate level to them over the next day or so.

Anyway, take a look and, as ever, tell us what you think. It's still a work in progress, so we'd appreciate input on what people think works and what doesn't.

I've set up a sample page about me (must be mad). You can see it here .

Best wishes,
Tech

No, it's stored under your nickname, so if you become "ImConfidential" for a while and people click that they wouldn't see anything.

You can add a photo. you need to start by clicking the "photos" link at the top and upload them. Once you've done that, you can use one of them on your main profile page.

Cheers,
Tech

I'm just fixing it. they'll be back in a minute or two.....

Tech · 17/01/2007 04:50

Clicking on a name should work now. Also the nickname history is fixed.

If you click the "public details" link again, there should be a select box just under your intro paragraph saying you can choose a picture there. If you do that and save, you should see it on the profile. We should probably make that a bit clearer.

Tech · 17/01/2007 05:11

Hi Sandcastles,
If you try again it should work.

I think it's because your intro paragraph is blank. It thinks the photo "goes with" the intro, so it won't show it. Try typing "hello" or something in there and see if it shows then.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm off to bed now on account of how it's 5:15am here, so won't be around for a few hours. I'll check back later though to see how everyone's getting on.

JustineMumsnet · 17/01/2007 10:49

Thanks for all comments, suggestions and reports of glitches. Tech's still asleep - he was up very late poor love - but I'm sure he'll get right on to it when he surfaces. Please do keep letting us know if there are any other features you'd like to see - this is very much a work in progress.
Cheers,
MNHQ

Morning all,
Thanks for all the very valuable comments.

We've addressed a couple of them, but some will need a change in the underlying code, which we don't like to do during the day as it can bring the site to a crawl. So we'll fix those overnight. Do keep them coming though, we're not ignoring them.

Hobbies should be showing up properly now, by the way.

Cheers,

Hi SaintGeorge,
The problem with the topic lists should be fixed now.

Tech · 17/01/2007 14:45

Some feedback on the problems reported so far....

Resize instructions for Mac and Windows:
I'm still writing them - they should be there by tomorrow.

Not all nicknames recognized by "mates" page: this should be fixed later today

Birthdates of children: that should be OK now.

Keeping having to log in: that is because we have been putting up fixes. Once it settles down, the problem will go away.

Hi,

We've made a few fixes tonight....

You should be able to view people's profiles without having to log in again, as long as you are logged in on Talk. You will still have to log in again separately to edit your own registration details and profile.

The problem where not all nicknames were recognised as valid in the "mates" page is fixed.

There was a problem uploading pictures with spaces in their names, which is also fixed.

Your favourite thread should show up now, along with the last five threads you posted on. That was supposed to be there from the start but I messed up.

Also, what you put in the "what you do" box should be showing up now.

That business with the ticks at the top of the page being remembered to long should be OK now.

Cheers,
Tech

Hi ska,
That particular feature - postcode search is coming soon but not available yet. We'll keep you posted.

We've put up a couple of fixes....

The photos link is back.

Uwila, no, no-one can see if you've added them to your "mates" list. Only you know that. Though they might figure it out I suppose if they can see your profile and they know someone else can't. Not sure how they would though.

I've also changed the page to not show the "favourite things" bit unless you fill at least one of them in.

We'll look at adding a CAT/CAM link to the bottom of the page. Shouldn't be a very big deal.

Tech · 18/01/2007 14:28

Hello CanStarveWillStarve, The short answer unfortunately is that you are out of luck. Having said that, we'll look at adding that option to the edit page. Shouldn't be a big deal to do.

JustineMumsnet · 18/01/2007 17:45

Hi KTeePee,
You don't have to enter anything for postcode and even if you do there is a make visible - yes or no - option.
The aim ultimately is to allow members to find each other locally so long as they wish to be found and to provide local area info (eg attractions, events etc) Providing your postcode will mean that you'll be able to see the stuff relevant to you and not all the other stuff. As ever, though, it's opt-in, you can opt out at any time and as per our privacy policy, we would never, ever pass any of this info on to any third party.
Hope that reassures you,
Best,
MNHQ

Now my chillun (feeling all ante-bellum South today), we are going to make some changes overnight to address some concerns / comments over the last day or so......

  1. The thing that stops you having a nickname less than four characters long will go away. Sorry about that I forgot we had all those 3 character nicknames already.....

  2. The "mumsnet mates" thing will change so that it only applies to pictures. Your profile will be either public or private.

  3. We'll allow you to move your profile from one nickname you have to another (but not both).

  4. We are going to change the link on names so that the profile opens in a separate window and you don't lose your place on the thread.

  5. We are going to put a visual cue on the post header (next to the exclamation point) to say whether or not someone has a public profile that you can click.

  6. We are going to add at CAT link to profiles, and next to the profile link on the post header.

On the privacy settings, there are already some profiles that are set to "mates" visibility. We'll set those back to private, so that people who didn't want them public don't get outed. If you decided to "go public" you can change it over yourself tomorrow or any time.

Regards,
Tech

Tech · 19/01/2007 12:25

private is really just so that people don't see it while you are working on it. If it's private, no-one else can look so there's not a lot of point making it in the first place. The idea was your last step would be to make it public.

JustineMumsnet · 19/01/2007 14:24

Hi KTeePee,
Don't worry! No one but you (and those at MNHQ) can see your registration page - your public profile page doesn't show your postcode.

Tech · 20/01/2007 00:36

Hi,
We didn't get all of this finished today (not cos I was watching big brother or anything no) so we''ll make the changes outlined below tomorrow night instead.

Sorry the updates didn't happen over the weekend. My excuse is below in the form of story of my weekend. I had planned to go up to see my folks in Leeds yesterday on the train and finish stuff off in nice bargain weekend first carriage with free tea and coffee.....

Saturday
8am. Get up. Drive to Forest Hill to pick up a package.
Get stuck on Walworth Road for an hour driving back - roadworks. Get back to Highbury 11 am.
Check internet for trains to Leeds. Engineering work. Will take 4 hours and two changes and a bus. Ponder whether to drive or call whole thing off.
11:15 am. Power in house goes off - this makes decision for me. Set off driving.
Traffic M1 widening Luton blah blah blah. Get to Leeds about 4.
Try to get mum and dad's broadband going. Won't work. Spend two hours on phone with various BT call centre persons who convince me router may be dodgy (it's mine and works in my house but nature has strange ways)

Sunday
Have offered to make Sunday lunch as treat for mother so put beef on. Turn down oven after 20 minutes as instructed by Delia. Go out. Go into Maplins. Sold out of routers. Drive to Comet get another one. Costs 60 quid. Take it home. Doesn't work. Meantime oven has blown out on turning down and house stinks like gas explosion about to happen.
Open all doors and let gale blow through for a few minutes. Relight oven. Fear for future of beef joint.
Another hour on phone with BT, which ends with them saying router must be broken. Hang up in some level of crossness.
Dinner. Actually remarkably OK despite interruption to cooking process.
6:30pm. Set off back to London. Get as far as Sheffield. Have to slow down to 30 mph as there is a SNOW STORM. Think may die any minute.
Traffic comes to a halt at Luton. Not too fussed as am happily screaming along with car stereo.
Get home. Still no power. Dark. Drive to friend's house to borrow a torch.
Get back to house. Fuses all intact. Odd.
Go downstairs to other flat in house. Turns out their circuit breakers went yesterday and when they put all the switches back to "up" they also put up the main on/off switch for my flat. Put it back down and lights come back on.
Go in kitchen. Get wet feet as freezer has deposited ice on floor as water. Food in freezer ruined.

Midnight. Off to bed. May stay there for some time.......
