Hello all,

We've added a function to Mumsnset so that you can set up a page about yourself that other people will eventually be able to see when they click your name on Talk. We figured this would work more easiliy better than starting a "member profile" thread, though you can of course still do that if you want to. If you go to the "my registration" link above you can get started from there if you'd like to set up a profile. This is of course totally optional, and only for those as want to do it. A number of people have expressed an interest in being able to do that over the months. If you do want to, remember you can answer as many or as few of the questions as you like.

You can set your profile to be "private" so only you can see it, or visible to all mumsnetters. There's also an intermediate level "Mumsnet mates" that lets you choose who can see it. You can set up a list of "mates" by following the "Mumsnet mates" link and typing their talk names into a box.

You can also set up a photo gallery for any pictures you'd to share with other Mumsnetters. For the moment, you can set these to be either public (any registered Mumsnetter could see them) or private to you. We'll add the intermediate level to them over the next day or so.

Anyway, take a look and, as ever, tell us what you think. It's still a work in progress, so we'd appreciate input on what people think works and what doesn't.

I've set up a sample page about me (must be mad). You can see it here .

Best wishes,
Tech

Oh, so MrCSWS has a profile! My DH would sooner die than have an MN profile. Maybe I should make him one just for fun!

ska · 18/01/2007 09:51

i can't work out how to find out where people live, apart from going through everybody's profiles. anybody know how to do this?

JustineMumsnet · 18/01/2007 11:07

Hi ska,
That particular feature - postcode search is coming soon but not available yet. We'll keep you posted.
Best,
MNHQ

MerlinsBeard · 18/01/2007 11:10

is there a way to disable the threads i have been on feature? Its a bit stalkery imo. possibly just me (as i appear to have a diff opinion to the majority )

NotAnOtter · 18/01/2007 11:12

horrors! I cannot imagine why anyone would have faith in that Cameron twit

NotAnOtter · 18/01/2007 11:12

yes i am not keen on that threads i have been on bit

princessmel · 18/01/2007 11:13

I agree about the stalker issue!

Emskilou · 18/01/2007 11:15

I have just set up my profile and agree I dont like the threads I have been on bit, it wasnt there yesterday when I started ( I know I am a bit slow ) its bit scarey, stalker ish!!!

DumbledoresGirl · 18/01/2007 11:20

Sorry, I am slower than slow, but I just took a look at this whole business and I want to know what Mumsnet mates is all about. It smacks of cliquiness but is that just because I have no mates to add? What I actually want to know is, what is the point of it? Is all this explained somewhere?

princessmel · 18/01/2007 11:23

Thats what I thought Dumboldores girl.

I think you pick some 'mates' and then only they can only see your profile. Very cliquey.

princessmel · 18/01/2007 11:23

Sorry wrong sp of your name.

DumbledoresGirl · 18/01/2007 11:27

If that is right, what a load of tosh! If you want to be friends with someone, what is wrong with CATing them or exchanging msn addresses? Why announce to Mumnset Towers that these are your special, bestest fwiendies?

I keep clicking on the profile page only to get irritated by something and decide not to post at all. My current gripe is my old one: that my photos are too large to be uploaded. I have't got a clue what the instructions for downsizing them mean, and I don't have a friend who is a technical whizz.

uwila · 18/01/2007 11:30

mates is so you can identify specific people to see your profile and not the general public.

TECH/Justine, can people see if you have put them or others as a mate? If so, I don't really like that. But, otherwise I think it's fine and not cliquey.

Deffo don't like the threads I'm on. Stalkerish for sure.

DumbledoresGirl · 18/01/2007 11:32

Oh I see, a way of limiting who sees your profile? I suppose that makes sense but it is not something I will bother with - if I ever post a profile.

uwila · 18/01/2007 11:33

Dumbledore, can youoad them into Microsoft Photo Editor (or whatever it's called) and simply downsize them and then save. Smaller pics make smaller files.

KezzaG · 18/01/2007 11:34

DG it is really easy to resize your photos. I am a total dunce with technology but I managed it, and all on my own too.

Just download the software from the link on the photos page. Keep clicking NEXT until it says it has installed. Mine took about a minute to do.

Then go to the picture you want to upload, right click on it, choose resize photo, choose small, and Bobs your uncle.

the picture will save in the file it was already in under the same name but with (small) written next to it.

princessmel · 18/01/2007 11:35

About resizing the photos, I downloaded the power toy thing they mention on the photo page. You just choose to make the pics the smallest option. I think its called pocketsize or something like that.

princessmel · 18/01/2007 11:36

I picked the small option and it still didn't work so I did the bottom option.

Tech · 18/01/2007 11:36

We've put up a couple of fixes....

The photos link is back.

Uwila, no, no-one can see if you've added them to your "mates" list. Only you know that. Though they might figure it out I suppose if they can see your profile and they know someone else can't. Not sure how they would though.

I've also changed the page to not show the "favourite things" bit unless you fill at least one of them in.

We'll look at adding a CAT/CAM link to the bottom of the page. Shouldn't be a very big deal.

Can you please take of the bit about recent threads too tech???

uwila · 18/01/2007 11:38

You are doing a fab job, Tech!

uwila · 18/01/2007 11:42

Astually, TECH, could you make all the categories not appear if they haven't been filled in.

melsy · 18/01/2007 11:47

Is anyone else having problems accessing the site stuff board ? or is it as your updating things tech ?

Also It only gave options for me joining Jan 2004 , but I have threads back from Oct 2003 ??

DumbledoresGirl · 18/01/2007 11:49

Right I have filled in a basic profile and want to know 2 things before I make it public:

  1. Can you get rid of the recent threads I have been on please? I don't see that is important and it looks messy and is not part of my profile. Everything else I can choose to show or not, so why not that bit?

  2. Once I make my profile public, can I change it? Loads of people will want to change child details, jobs, locations etc, and in my case, i know I will want to change it just because I am bored with what I wrote! So is that possible??

uwila · 18/01/2007 11:52
  1. You are not the only one asking for this. I expect tech is working on it.

  2. YEs, chang it as often as you like. I've changed mine a million times already.
