Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Mayz, is your iPad landscape or portrait when you come here? I always use mine landscape, and tbh, it seems to be fine, everything reasonably sized. When I have it portrait-wise things are tiny and horrid.

Iggi999 · 30/03/2016 14:27

I agree AnneEyhtMeyer, it's like the opposite of a reasonable adjustment.

CoteDAzur · 30/03/2016 14:44

979 posts and MNHQ are still insisting with this illegible font & layout.

WHY?

feellikeahugefailure · 30/03/2016 14:45

It does seem different to me. I'm fine with how it is now.

What are the changes HQ have made since people first complained?

Scone1nSixtySeconds · 30/03/2016 20:04

As long as the iPad is horizontal and the screen brightness is on minimum I can read the site ok.

Tried on the laptop (safari on OS X) and gave up.

prettybird · 30/03/2016 20:15

Usually access MN via the app so it's taken me a while to assess this change on the laptop.

Using Chrome and it is definitely harder to read - font is much more spindly and spidery. Some of that could be the fact that my screen doesn't gave brilliant resolution (a 6 year old Dell laptop) but previously I didn't have problems, nor do I have problems with legibility on any other website that I use Hmm

CoteDAzur · 30/03/2016 20:16

I'm on laptop (Safari) and TIO font is ridiculously tiny. I have to zoom in to read the page every time.

Why MNHQ? Why are you doing this to us?

There is no other website with such antsy writing. What has gotten into you? Shock

I've only really stayed for the telly threads, Mary. I don't care about the lack of bold. The site looks a mess.

The next time MNHQ step into a thread and remind people this site is supposed to make life easier for parents I'll have to step in and add "unless they have sight problems, then they can bugger off".

MrsJamin · 30/03/2016 21:25

I can't see italicised font. At all! Have reported a post and explained what computer/browser I"m using.

WhoKnowsWhereTheChocolateGoes · 30/03/2016 21:40

I have to say it's fine for me now, despite my middle aged monovision contact lenses, I guess my eyes have adjusted. I use it on a Mac (Safari) and three Windows laptops (2x Chrome, 1xIE), no adjustments made by me.

But I am not impressed that it's still causing problems for other people and their concerns are not apparently being listened to.

rumbleinthrjungle · 01/04/2016 09:01

Checking in to see what happened re the font test I participated in last week as nothing has happened.

Please MNHQ say this isn't going to be a case of just leaving it as it is until everyone gives up?

cirrusblue · 01/04/2016 11:32

I emailed Mumsnet yesterday to ask what is going on. No reply as yet. I really hope it isn't going to be a war of attrition, as rumble says, with them just carrying on as it is and us as the casualties who don't matter much to them if we have to give up.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/04/2016 17:46

All the sections - Threads I'm On, I'm Watching etc - are fine now - easily legible - apart from Active, which hasn't changed.

I can see real improvements, both on the PC and on the iPad - hopefully they will roll across the whole site soon.

Itinerary · 01/04/2016 18:20

It's OK on the laptop but still spindly on the PC. Both Windows, both Firefox.

SwedishEdith · 01/04/2016 20:01

Has it changed again? Suddenly seems smaller.

cozietoesie · 01/04/2016 21:31

Maryz

Unless MNHQ have fixed the glitch very recently, you can go past 1,000 by using the app to post.

Just sayin'. Wink

cozietoesie · 01/04/2016 21:33

PS - although I would always have assumed that staffers had special 'override' powers anyway. Grin

If you were using the app, you'd have to put up with them changing the colour of post headers, though. (Well the test version at the moment but it sounds rather like a done deal for the 'real thing'.)

Have you changed to New yet by the way? Wink

cardoon · 02/04/2016 07:31

Come on MNHQ, talk to us!

cozietoesie · 02/04/2016 08:24

I think you've likely had all the response you're going to get, l'm afraid. Smile

cozietoesie · 02/04/2016 08:25

And just to remind MNHQ about the post 1,000 messages glitch?Grin
