Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

ugh, Blush not bluch - nothing to do with shoes, glue or the Napoleonic war Blush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/03/2016 20:32

I've also just done the survey. Agree that both test fonts are worse than the current one, but there was nowhere for me to say that I didn't like any of the 3!

JessicaMumsnet · 22/03/2016 20:46

Hi Athelstane and Remus, thanks for taking part in the test, we've amended the survey to give people more space to explain their response to that question. If you've already completed the survey already would you mind emailing us your thoughts?

Thank you Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/03/2016 20:51

Just as I've said here, Jessica. This one is the best of the three, and 6 was by far the worst, but I'm still not liking this one much and have to have frequent breaks from it.

I think one of my biggest problems is there's so much white space and the font is quite light, so it's getting lost.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 22/03/2016 21:00

Thanks, Jess.

This is slightly better than stage6 (I thought stage4 was by far the worst), but the same comments apply to this one as to stage6 - it's fuzzy, blurry, seems patchy (small l's are near invisible), and makes me squint. The words seem to float above the background.

Having said that, I've been looking more closely at all the fonts on all the websites and it turns out I hate all of them. I may not be the best respondent.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/03/2016 09:32

I'd like to add another 'argh' to the two test fonts. Both awful. I do appreciate the opportunity to try them out - thank you. All 3 versions are useless for me I'm afraid.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 23/03/2016 10:37

Are you going to extend this thread if/when it hits 1000 posts, MNHQ? Or start another one?

Still waiting for TIO to be sorted, it's still giving me pain. :(

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 23/03/2016 10:37

Oh and I know it's already been mentioned, but this really has NOT been a "wee (it's not that big) update" - it's been a fiasco.

bigbuttons · 23/03/2016 18:30

What IS the bloody point of this thread? Nothing has changed. Why put it up? I HATE what has happened to the site.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/03/2016 19:14

I thought the two test fonts were OK - 6 was better than 4 - but I couldn't see what they looked like in TIO - which is where the problem is worst for me, so I can't judge whether either test font would sort my problem for me.

And I agree with ThumbWitch - it hasn't been a 'wee change' - it's been a fiasco.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 24/03/2016 04:25

bigbuttons - they did change one thing on request - the font size in the message box, which helped enormously.

The rest though...

bigbuttons · 24/03/2016 06:40

So , there i no longer the facility to personalise which topics you want to to see/not see and all that?

I can't find any of it any more.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2016 07:06

So , there i no longer the facility to personalise which topics you want to to see/not see and all that?

Customise is on the menu that comes up when you click the 'V in a circle' next to the big Talk heading up at the top.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 24/03/2016 07:08

It's still there Bigbuttons - up at the top of the page, where Talk is in big letters, there is a circle next to it with a down arrow tip in it. Click on that, Customise and various other things are in there.

Despite me swearing I would never go into Customise again, in case things changed that I didn't want to, I have just been to have a look for you and changed NOTHING myself - down the bottom of the Customise page, the option to hide topics is still available, BUT MNHQ TAKE NOTE - the button is blue and purple. I think blue writing on a purple button. Possibly the other way around (you'd think I could remember, it was only a minute or so ago) but I'm fairly sure it was blue writing on a purple button, which, guess what! is ILLEGIBLE. Same as the purple writing on the blue buttons on the side were, before those were changed to white writing on blue.

I just cannot fathom what any of the Techs/design team/MNHQ were thinking to put purple and blue together on a button. It is unreadable.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2016 07:14

It is blue on purple - I imagine as it is an "already visited link"

There's another error on the customise page... The style name I think.

Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...
SoupDragon · 24/03/2016 07:16

As an aside, it annoys me immensely that you can't make the menus disappear by clicking elsewhere on the screen. You have to click the button again.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 24/03/2016 07:26

Absolutely agree with that Soupy - what with the page still jumping around too, I keep accidentally clicking on "My Mumsnet" or whatever at the top, and yes, took me ages (ok, not ages ) to work out that I had to click on the My Mumsnet button again to get rid of it!

Like I said - fiasco. :(

SoupDragon · 24/03/2016 07:31

I think the menu thing came in when they changed the whole top of the page design before.

Fiderer · 24/03/2016 08:10

I reported there only being one style in Customise, no change still.

I don't have an arrow next to Talk, used to but now it's "c" and when I click on it it becomes a "z". That's handy for posters who don't know it used to be an arrow. Click on random single letters Hmm

CoteDAzur · 24/03/2016 09:28

Just checking back in to say that things have not improved for me at all.

The font in Threads I'm On is still too faint and line spacing still too tight. It is very unpleasant to read, which I am sure was not your intention when these 'improvements' were done.

MNHQ - It's shit. Please change it back. Or at least thicken the font & widen the spacing between the lines.

RockUnit · 24/03/2016 09:35

The font is still hard to read. It was so much better before!

Roussette · 24/03/2016 09:47

See.... on my "I'm on" it's big, clear and easy to read. Also "sort by" dropdown box has got really big type in it. To me, there's been big changes since this was first rolled out, everything is bigger and clearer.

I just wonder if different posters are seeing different due to something, don't know what, -I'm not techy enough!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 24/03/2016 10:00

Would you just clarify what system you're on please, Roussette? Just so the techs (and the rest of us) know why you've got it right on yours and we haven't? Thanks :)

Roussette · 24/03/2016 10:12

Yes.... Google Chrome on Asus laptop.

I'm not trying to be annoying but yes, all is fine, and I'd even go as far as to say it is better than before. Clearer, neater, more intuitive etc. To start with there was spindly writing, not on threads, but on TIO and 'threads I'm watching', but now it is all very readable and type is bold, not spaced out, no very white background etc. Also the typing box is exactly the same font and clarity as what is on the thread.
