Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

I changed the font when I was enjoying posting on the St Patrick's Day thread & got a headache before any Jameson had been consumed.

feellikeahugefailure · 24/03/2016 12:44

SO has the font changed? I've switched to the mobile site. on my laptop

bigbuttons · 24/03/2016 12:53

found it, thank youSmile

trufflesnout · 24/03/2016 18:11

Nothing has changed for me. It's still Roboto in bold-as-shit everywhere.

Iggi999 · 24/03/2016 20:39

I don't know how to use a font changer and I don't see why I should have to learn. I've no problems on other sites. Just use a decent font mumsnet please.

RockUnit · 24/03/2016 21:55

I agree Iggi.

Shelby1981 · 26/03/2016 16:20

Trending just disappeared!! But then came back after some minutes.....what's going on?

bluebell34567 · 27/03/2016 02:27

Previous font was much better. This font puts me off.

openthecurtains · 29/03/2016 09:58

I still can't use this. I come back every couple of days to check if it's got better but I leave within 5 mins as I'm squinting. On the plus side, I'm wasting a LOT less time here but I miss it. I'm not even clicking on Mumsnet if it comes up on a google search for something as it's not worth the headache.

cirrusblue · 29/03/2016 10:24

Mumsnet HQ - are you still working on alternative fonts? I don't think any of the results from the testing last week were really satisfactory, were they? I appreciate you took the Easter break off, but it would be good to hear what progress/plans you are making, as the current font is so hard to read, especially in blocks of text. I can barely spend any time on here now, which I do miss a lot.
If there was the option to have the original font back that would be ideal.

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 29/03/2016 15:25

i haven't changed the font, what i've done is set MN to always open in 110%. I can't read it any smaller than that.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/03/2016 16:02

cirrusblue has put it very well :) I tend to be only on here now when I'm on my pc and can change the font, I'm on other platforms much less, which is a shame as when I'm on my pc, it generally means I'm working.

RockUnit · 29/03/2016 16:19

It looks more spindly again.

Thurlow · 29/03/2016 16:21

Am I the only one who likes the new font?

It would be interesting to hear who doesn't mind it. Not that I mean to denigrate anyone who is having problems with it, and MN definitely need to address that, but I do wonder how many people are actually ok with it?

Lweji · 29/03/2016 16:32

It's ok for me. I still feel that the font on the threads is slightly too small, but otherwise it's fine.

cardoon · 29/03/2016 18:13

Are we all seeing the same thing?

I was having terrible trouble with the font a few days ago (feeling sick, dizzy and cross-eyed) but it all seems OK now!

Why is MNHQ being so quiet?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 29/03/2016 18:34

To be honest it is besides the point if people like the font if people with visual impairments can't read it. I don't like the way a lovely old building in my home town now has an ugly metal ramp outside it, but I appreciate that making the building accessible is the only consideration that matters.

I could not use the new design because my astigmatism meant the new layout was unclear and gave me eye pain and headaches within minutes.

I have had to use Font Changer to make the site legible. It now looks like a 15 year old has set up a website for a school project, with random letters (a c after Mumsnet at the top for example) and things misaligned and some functionality missing, but it is now legible to me.

As MNHQ don't seem to mind making their site illegible to many visually impaired people I have two options - stop using their site or make adjustments like using ad blocker and font changer. I have chosen the second option for now, but if I were a new user I wouldn't stay.

I honestly thought that MNHQ would have swapped back as soon as they realised the effect on visually impaired people. It has been quite an eye-opener (excuse the pun) that they haven't.

RockUnit · 29/03/2016 18:44

I don't just dislike the spindly font, I find it hard to read.

I have no idea what Font Changer is, and have never had to use it before on any website, ever.

I discovered Font Changer through this thread, RockUnit. I too have never had cause to use it on any website before now.

In a nutshell, it allows you to choose the font you want a website to be in. I googled it and now Mumsnet is in Verdana, which is clear and easy to read.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 29/03/2016 19:11

I agree, Maryz. I think it is a done deal. Sad

Does font changer not work for you?
