Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

I can read nickelbabe's bold capitals just fine. Maybe we should all post in that.

nickelbabe · 21/03/2016 10:57

looking at some of the earlier threads, I've increased my page zoom to 120%, which is okay, because i'm not straining my eyes to read the very thin scrawl.

Otherwise, I've just looked at the top of the page where the menus etc are, and I've worked out why it looks so fucking awful - it looks like my DH's computer, where as he's got a really old OS, his fonts look really pixelated on the internet because he can't change his screen resolution to match current resolutions.

I know that it's not my computer because my computer is showign a good resolution on every other page and every other programme i've got open.

I'm on the very latest firefox release, because i only re-installed it 3 days ago.
that's firefox 43.0.1
(on vista if that makes a difference)

You just need to change the font back - I know you want some cohesion between desktop and modile sites, but really, that's NOT what people want, and that's not what's best for the website (or ANY website)
that's why facebook looks different on the mobile and on the desktop, and it's why you should too (and every website)
mobile sites should be quick, easy to load,,easy to navigate and have simple lines and simple links.
desktop sites should provide the full functionality, including more content and more bits to tweak or to find.
that's how it should be.
mobiles are for on the go, when you just want to read the threads or find something quickly. when you want to browse and when you want to just surf.
desktops are for when you want to do more and more and more (you know like proper work (avoidance)

This thin font works on mobiles generally because they're smallerand the resolution is less, and so it needs a font that has less "volume" to it - that's as least complicated as possible.
on a desktop, you need a bullkier and more substantial font, because it's a bigger area to fill and because it needs to be like that.

so, when i'm producing something for my church, i choose a different font for printing as for website, and I'd use a different font when I wanted the words to be smaller as i would for bigger words.

nickelbabe · 21/03/2016 11:01

me Soupy ?
I can't help it - I can't stand change, especially without warning (serves me right for sticking to most active and not reading site threads until something goes wrong)

Change should only be done when it actually serves a positive purpose.

and i don't think that this change is a "teeny" chnage like the title says.

QueenElizardbeth · 21/03/2016 11:01

When you're producing something for your church, do you swear at people in big bold capital letters too? Or just on here?

I'm a bit surprised that you feel it's necessary - I've known you on here for years and never seen you post like that.

nickelbabe · 21/03/2016 11:02

okay "wee (it's really not that big)"

QueenElizardbeth · 21/03/2016 11:03

Oh you can't help it

well that's alright then

nickelbabe · 21/03/2016 11:04

have you not?! Shock

the big bold capital letters is because i've been spending too much time onfacebook wherethe only way of bolding is to use capitals.
that's a bad habit.

But, yes, I've used strong language and raging bolding lots of times.

nickelbabe · 21/03/2016 11:04

anyway, it's more strongly worded than my mood is.

QueenElizardbeth · 21/03/2016 11:08

ok then Hmm

claig · 21/03/2016 11:09

nickelbabe, I admire your restraint considering the abysmal font situation

nickelbabe · 21/03/2016 11:09

the front page has a sensible font - that's readable at 100%

When looked at at 100% (laptop, Chrome) the actual thread looks like a minor part of the page, small and lots of white. This makes the ads stand out more. That doesn't help the advertisers though, because once I've increased the size enough to comfortably read for longer than 10 minutes the ads are gone, because I make the screen text-width.

MTPurse · 21/03/2016 12:36

Had a lovely weekend MNetting from the mobile site on my tablet but now its a weekday I am back to having to use desktop and it really is still hard on the eyes.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/03/2016 12:36

Just for "fun", I reduced the size to 100% (I've been using MN at 110% for ages because I'm starting to have troubles reading smaller type) - and oh yes it's so much worse!

I'm quite happy with the thread at 110% (and happy to leave it at that size) but why in the name of all things holy have you not addressed the bloody ridiculousness of TIO properly yet?? It's barely legible at 110%, and fairly illegible without a magnifying glass at 100%!
I'm sure it has improved slightly since this thread began, because I don't get such a fecking headache off TIO now; but it's nowhere near good enough yet - so come on, WHAT is taking the time?

Do you really think we're all going to develop super-sight just so you can leave it this way? Hmm

I'm sorry you can't stand change Nickel but I still think all the OTT swearing in your post was unnecessarily rude and aggressive.

Pretty much everyone hates the font and it's even made some physically ill with headaches but they've managed to express that without being rude.

Not rtft nor looked at it on the desktop when when I advance searched over the weekend otbt was returning results.

RockUnit · 21/03/2016 13:09

Still finding the new font hard to read.

Roussette · 21/03/2016 13:14

It's been improved massively. No more spindly font on "last 15 minutes"

It also seems darker. I have no problem with it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/03/2016 13:17

We were told that this would be looked at again in a few days if we were still finding it difficult. it is more than a few days now and we've not had any feedback. I'm not surprised people are feeling frustrated.

paxillin · 21/03/2016 13:20

It's really bad news for the advertisers, even without ad-blockers. People zoom in so much the ads fall off the site.

QueenElizardbeth · 21/03/2016 13:20

If that's restrained, I'd be interested to see what let it rip looks like...

seriously - everyone has roughly the same circumstances apart from those with a VI etc and most people have been polite and tried to be constructive.

So I don't really understand why screaming in bold capitals is thought of as 'restrained'. I must be missing something.

However...I guess there's not much point going on about it.

JessicaMumsnet · 21/03/2016 13:23

Hello,
Just checking in to let everyone know that we are working on addressing the display of the font on TIO/TIW which isn't right for some people on some browsers.

We'll also be experimenting with a larger version for threads and thank you to all who volunteered over the weekend to help us with testing.

ApocalypseSlough · 21/03/2016 13:23

Yep otbt still shows in advanced search
