Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

Horrible font - far too pale and hard to read here. Thought I'd done something odd with my zoom settings.

Will be useless on the iPad instead of the laptop (I use the normal desktop site on iPad not the app as its easier for me to read).

RNIB recommend you use Arial 12pt by the way as the clearest font for anyone with sight issues.

It is a truly horrible font, and by screwing with the line-height you've made it even worse, changing fonts is a silly thing to do. The font is your brand.

Sorry I also think the font is too hard to read, and I'm not sure why. It felt so weird to read that I have switched to my phone (and I usually much prefer the desktop version). It's interesting to see that other people who get migraines are having the same issues.

kelper · 16/03/2016 11:50

I thought id done something to the computer until i spotted this thread....
Im going to go against the grain and say i quite like this font, It's how id like my handwriting to be....

OhGoveUckYourself · 16/03/2016 11:50

Oh God! First Goodreads and now Mumsnet have the trendy font and blindingly white background. After a few minutes the glare gives me a headache. I suppose it will mean I spend a lot less time on here. Sad

msrisotto · 16/03/2016 11:50

Does anyone else get the top third - half of the page completely blank?
It's like the page starts at half way down. It was like this for me before the change btw, but only on this website, no others. I use chrome.

BluePancakes · 16/03/2016 11:51

Not sure it's a head's-up when it's already happened? Hmm

Don't like the massive advert that confronted me when I first clicked on this site. made me think I was back on NMs

Might have to admit DH was right obviously NOT to his face and install an adblocker.

And agree with the others, I don't like the new font much.

I don't really know why it is so hard to read (and unpleasant) but it is!

I am currently using an iPad mini and have never had these issues before. Turning off now.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 11:52

Msrisotto, do you have an adblocker? That would be why the top 1/3 of the page is blank.

Oh look, I LOATHE the font in this message box, WHY is it so much bigger and paler and ridiculous? Why can't it just look like the bloody post font?

Samcro · 16/03/2016 11:52

please tell me that it isn't going to stay all odd like this . it is horrid and very hard to read.

littlewoollypervert · 16/03/2016 11:53

New font is a bit fuzzy/not as crisp as it was BUT only on the white background - it's actually very nice when it's got a colour behind it. Horrible while typing a post though - it's like a typewriter where the ribbon is running out of ink (yes I'm old and remember typewriters)

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 11:53

It just looks so MESSY now!! All these different fonts, different sizes, different thicknesses - argh!!

todgerthedodger · 16/03/2016 11:54

The font needs to be darker. It is a bugger to read.

msrisotto · 16/03/2016 11:54

I really don't know how to install an ad blocker but it seems likely that somehow, ads are being blocked!

BreconBeBuggered · 16/03/2016 11:54

At least the jumping-down pages have stopped. But I think I'll follow the Budget on Twitter now, as I'm getting a bit headachey reading this.

Nanny0gg · 16/03/2016 11:55

Dreadful font! Really difficult to read (old gimmer here)

^^This.

A serif font would be better for the amount of text you have to read, It's a nice font, but not for this. (See any newspaper page to compare)

It's also not dark enough.

Roussette · 16/03/2016 11:56

Glad I found this thread as I went outside to cut a bush down, came back and everything was different!

Not worried, seems OK to me, everyone hates change and within 24 hours you I wont remember what it used to be like.

Background doesn't seem whiter to me but perhaps that is my eyes. Typing box is less easy to read but fine.

Now toddling off to look for a drop down box that I can't find.... Confused

jellybean2000 · 16/03/2016 11:56

Was this tested before being rolled out?

Samcro · 16/03/2016 11:56

what Nanny said. I can barely read this

ouryve · 16/03/2016 11:57

Well, it' not an improvement in readability for me. It all blurs into one. And the text in this here reply box is ridiculously faint

jazzandh · 16/03/2016 11:57

Yes, I am having to try very hard to read this...too much of an effort! TIO almost impossible to decipher at a glance.
