Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Well. I was not expecting that. It really doesn't look like MN now; more as if I'm dreaming and have strayed into unfamiliar territory.

I don't mind minor design changes but my eyes aren't fond of the streeeetched text at all. It looks fine, if a little faded, as I'm writing but the rest of the thread looks as if it's been on the rack.

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:37

@Maryz

I have a pre-change thread open, and it's much easier to read. I dunno, maybe I'll get used to it.

Justine, I only have adblocker on the desktop because of the kids and all the sodding links they click on. So I see all your beeyootyfull ads on my laptop, ipad and phone, you'll be happy to know Grin

Well that's something I suppose - thank you Smile

I like the font, but when previewing TIO it is really small.

GrouchyKiwi · 16/03/2016 11:37

Agree that the font is too narrow (though strangely not in the box when typing replies). Height is good, though. Is there a wide version of the font? I do think it's good as is for section headers, etc.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 16/03/2016 11:38

the font size in the blue bar with the posters name is better, much easier to read. Or the size in the box as i'm typing here, that's not so squished.

Will take a bit of getting used to the whiteness though, but i think I'll come to like it it, it's very uncluttered

WorraLiberty · 16/03/2016 11:38

I'm on desktop, using my lappy, Maryz

When I click on TIO, the font in the list is a bit too small.

But otherwise everything else is bigger.

moonbells · 16/03/2016 11:38

If you make the letters smaller on the browser then it's a bit more bearable but if you are even slightly short-sighted then the letters fuzz out too much, especially on a high-res display. I think the lines are only 1 pixel wide on mine. Most of the accessibility tests assume you have 20/20 vision... They need to be bolder (previews message) oh yes much better!

Make it BOLD please!

PinotEgregio · 16/03/2016 11:39

I thought I'd been pinged to some faux-Mumsnet phishing site at first.

I hate change Sad

I'm sure I'll get used to it... eventually.

Thurlow · 16/03/2016 11:39

Like this - the font is weeny!

Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...
moonbells · 16/03/2016 11:39

(Sorry I should say lines are 1 pix wide on the adding message box. They are wider on the actual posts)

WorraLiberty · 16/03/2016 11:39

Oh and no change in whiteness for me?

Ninjagogo · 16/03/2016 11:39

Verdict: harder for my optically challenged eyes to read, type looks fainter and more stretched out. Will get used to it though.

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:39

@Thurlow

I like the font, but when previewing TIO it is really small.

Thanks for pointing that out Thurlow - I agree - and we'll change it.

Aaargh change!

I quite like the new font and everything is nice and clear and clean looking. I thought I'd been switched to the mobile thing by accident so I'm relieved it's a site update and I don't have to worry about how the hell to alter things

jellybean2000 · 16/03/2016 11:40

Bleugh to the new font.

FreshsatsumaforDd · 16/03/2016 11:41

Don't like the font change. Much harder to read!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 11:41

Damn skippy the new font change is unwelcome! It SUCKS!!

Thurlow · 16/03/2016 11:42

Ta!

seafoodeatit · 16/03/2016 11:42

I like the change, it came on quite suddenly though! it's a nice surprise :)

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 11:43

To be more precise - yes the font in TIO is too small and hard to see.
The font in this message box is bigger but annoying.
The font in the posted messages is OK I suppose. But I don't like it. But it's ok.

MTPurse · 16/03/2016 11:44

Is there any way we could have an option to change back to the 'other' old way?

I am going to have to log off as my eyes really can not cope with the font and I'm on the verge of an aura migraine. (no exaggeration).

squoosh · 16/03/2016 11:44

It's so wispy!

Shelby1981 · 16/03/2016 11:44

new font is so hard to read, I've only read a few pages and am starting to get a headache. I don't have poor eyesight either, only very slightly short sighted and I have my glasses on

Sad been spending hours on mums net since becoming pregnant, but I guess it'll be no more.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 16/03/2016 11:45

Changes like this tend to enrage the great and powerful internet god. It's never a good idea to do that.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 11:45

Just seen the 2 new blue buttons on the left. As a laptop user, can I just say that the writing on those is all but illegible. Thin purple on solid blue = pretty much invisible.

And the thin purple anywhere is not very visible for that matter either.
