Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

I don't mind the other changes, but the font is terrible, please put it back to how it was.

almondpoisson · 16/03/2016 12:10

I was adjusting my screen angle then assumed it was because I wasn't wearing my spectacles
Now relieved not my eyes. As you were.

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 12:11

@ThumbWitchesAbroad

Just seen the 2 new blue buttons on the left. As a laptop user, can I just say that the writing on those is all but illegible. Thin purple on solid blue = pretty much invisible.

And the thin purple anywhere is not very visible for that matter either.

That definitely doesn't sound right Thumbwitches - should be white on blue. Are you still getting that if you refresh and if so, can you tell us what browser?

"It's Bad" - Michael Jackson
"I can't read [the font] very well" - Sammy Davis Jr
"It was a mistake" - Roger Taylor from Queen

Some big name quotes to add to the thread.

Mummylin · 16/03/2016 12:12

It's a terrible decision for the people who already struggle to read the print.

almondpoisson · 16/03/2016 12:13

I agree re. the font. Kind of stretched and glare-y blurry
(maybe that's my eyes..)

fredfredgeorgejnrsnr · 16/03/2016 12:13

It's interesting that google do not use roboto in places where there's lots of text to read, so not in gmail or google search. That's specifically because it's not a great font for those purposes.

almondpoisson · 16/03/2016 12:14

The ones on the left are okay for me (white on blue)

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 12:14

No, definitely purple writing on solid blue, just for the 2 new buttons that apparently say Active and I'm On (if I get up really close and squint)

Browser = chrome, I'm still supposedly using MN Classic, on the laptop, using Windows 7.

I've just backspaced numerous times to get back to a cached page of the old style - SO MUCH NICER!!

Don't understand why you've changed the bolding of things either.

Sparklingbrook · 16/03/2016 12:15

I can hide trending on the laptop- yay!!

Was anyone asked their opinion before the change of font?

Seeline · 16/03/2016 12:15

I now have a headache from squinting at the screen even though I am wearing my glasses
The acres of whiteness don't help
And the paleness of the text

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/03/2016 12:15

I am struggling with the new font too - I already have to use glasses to use the PC - and it's worst on my Threads I'm On page - it is well-nigh unreadable.

Even now, looking at the dialogue I'm typing, the font is unclear - it's as if it's too thin for me to see it properly.

What was wrong with the old font?

ScrambledSmegs · 16/03/2016 12:16

I like it. I can use the desktop site on my tablet now, and that makes me happy.

It's the little things Flowers

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 12:16

Also, in TIO, the number of new messages (up to 18 of course) is in a HUGE font in comparison with the title of the thread (acceptable size) and the messages (too small to read)

almondpoisson · 16/03/2016 12:16

cough Grin

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 16/03/2016 12:17

I'm quite excited that I need to use the desktop later now! DHs book may have to wait Wink

iseenodust · 16/03/2016 12:18

Didn't realise I was struggling to read the new font apart from the comment above but have just been off to BTmail and it was an 'and breathe' moment.

MrsNutella · 16/03/2016 12:18

Ahhhhh I wondered for a bit what had happened I didn't think it was really my new contact lenses I don't like the font very much either. I have to make a squinty face to get everything to sit still that could be the new contact lenses

Otherwise, I suppose I could write only in bold from now on. That would help, wouldn't it?

Mummylin · 16/03/2016 12:18

Why do you have to change things that aren't broken and has worked perfectly well before, could you not have given us a trial and then asked what we thought before you changed the font. It's really awful. Too light and too thin.

Nanny0gg · 16/03/2016 12:20

That would help, wouldn't it?

I actually think it's even harder to read in bold!

Mummylin · 16/03/2016 12:21

That's much better nannyogg

feellikeahugefailure · 16/03/2016 12:21

I love it. Much clearer and modern,

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2016 12:22

What was it before it was Roboto (which sucks) then? I'm not au fait with all the font names, just know what I like and what I don't.

perfumedlife · 16/03/2016 12:22

Horrible. It's hard work trying to read more than a few sentences.

AuntieStella · 16/03/2016 12:23

I don't like it.

Can there be an option to select font, so we can all be happy?

How many people actually said that the differing fonts between app and desktop was a problem for them?

Why didn't everyone get a chance to comment?
