Why does the desktop site page keep jumping around?! It's driving me crazy!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 22/02/2016 15:44

I have an adblocker, so I'm guessing it's because of ads. I have no header, the MN logo is still not back (Why not?) but now the fecking page keeps jumping, taking far too long to get into position, so that I think I'm clicking on one thing and then end up clicking on something entirely different as the page jumps down.

I have about 3" of white space at the top of my page (hence thinking it must be something to do with ads) - but WHY must the page JUMP??

The site is becoming hugely frustrating with all this jumping and resultant mis-clicking!

Please do something about it (and bring back the logo, goddammit!)

I'm using a different laptop, and Chrome rather than Safari, and it's still happening ...

Mummylin · 01/06/2016 23:14

Been happening for me today too. It's bloody annoying when you click on the wrong thing. iPad, Safari, iOS latest edition

plasticboxesrock · 14/06/2016 21:00

Really annoying still, hurts my eyes

BitOutOfPractice · 14/06/2016 21:30

Still happening to me. I go to click "last page" and it's jumped so I click "refresh" instead. Rinse and repeat. Very annoying

BIWI · 15/06/2016 00:05

It seems to be something to do with the size of the ad at the top of the page.

If you can't accommodate this without making the site jump around, then please, please, please reduce the size.

I know that we all accept suffer ads so that the site remains free for users, but it does sometimes feel that the needs of advertisers is more important than the needs of the users.

shitchef · 15/06/2016 12:05

I've come to the conclusion that I either have to have the ads and everything takes so long to load that I give up OR I have an adblocker and get the jumpiness. I'm reaching the point where I'd rather chuck a tenner in MN's direction every so often than get these tech issues all the time. I don't actually mind the ads, tend to just ignore them but MNHQ seems really crap on the technical side of things and the ads seem to interfere constantly with the usability of the site.

BIWI · 15/06/2016 12:40

Even without adblocker it jumps around Sad

shitchef · 15/06/2016 13:06

Oh yes mine did too but I figured that faster loading + jumping was better than snail speed loading + jumping! Should just cut down on MN really, maybe after the EU ref.... Grin

BIWI · 27/06/2016 13:15

PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE SORT THIS OUT!

Honestly, it's really getting beyond a joke how long this is taking to deal with.

plasticboxesrock · 29/06/2016 17:40

Yes, it's really annoying.
MNHQ please can we have an update, it's a month since the last time you commented on this thread. Thanks.

nothruroad · 29/06/2016 22:53

This is a huge issue today. I'm using a laptop and chrome and it's jumping every time. This combined with needing to log in every time I switch tabs is making the site practically unusable at the moment. Is there nothing that can be done about these issues?

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 29/06/2016 22:56

yup...still going on here too, always,

it's a pita.

KatherineMumsnet · 30/06/2016 10:13

We really do apologise for this - we've nudged tech and will come back to you once we have an answer. Thanks so much for your patience!

SilkandSteel · 30/06/2016 12:44

Agreed!! Fed up to the back teeth with it and the endless promises to resolve and ........ still it happens!

KatherineMumsnet · 01/07/2016 11:16

Hi again everyone, tech are in talks to see what can be done about the way the site runs, as in the current format there isn't anything they can do to prevent this happening. We really do appreciate your patience, and know this is far from ideal. Bear with us, it won't be immediate, but we are very aware that this a huge irritation for many of you.

JustineMumsnet · 01/07/2016 15:06

Hiya,
The page jumping down after loading what's known as a billboard ad (ie the wide big rectangle at the top of the page) is a pretty standard thing. If you go on the Guardian, Times or Telegraph sites exactly the same thing happens.

We tend to have billboard ads on a fewer pages than those sites do, so it won't happen as often (roughly I'd say about 1 in 5 pages). The speed of our jump is the same as the Guardian's and is slower than the Times and Telegraph's. We can certainly speed it up which might make it less noticeable and you less liable to miss-click, and are happy to give that a try.

It doesn't have anything to do with the font change - it's just that we introduced the new ad format (billboards) at about the same time. We don't have billboards on mobile but I think the jump there happens when you refresh the page - this again is pretty standard - you'd expect to go back to the place you were and the jump is a jump down to the point at which you were viewing when you refreshed.

It seems from this thread that it's more of a problem with an ad blocker - probably it's just more noticeable because the ads don't fill the space. There's not much I can say to that other than the obvious!

We do need to show ads to pay for the running of the site and billboard ads are the current format of choice for advertisers. I'm aware that with sub-optimal connections all display advertising can lengthen page load times but the truth is we can't survive without ads unless we start charging for use (which is a whole other can of worms). We will, I promise, continue to monitor our page load speed and make it a priority to keep optimising it to be as slick as possible.

We'll also trial speeding up the page jump and see if that improves the experience.

Sorry not to be the bearer of better news!

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 01/07/2016 19:30

it's most certainly not 1 in 5 for me, it is every page on MN, and I absolutely do not see it anywhere else.

but hey, I am no ITexpert.

SilkandSteel · 01/07/2016 20:25

Yep, every page without fail. DOES NOT happen on any other website, only mumsnet. Frankly feel like we've been fobbed off Angry

alwaysme22 · 01/07/2016 20:29

It's every page for me too, I don't use an ad blocker either.

It's an absolute pain, literally :(

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 01/07/2016 20:37

hah...silkandsteel I felt that comment was just a pat on the head and being told to run along now as the grown up were busy with Important Things

Really? Oh dear, that wasn't the intention. Apologies if that's what it felt like. If it's jumping every page for you then the problem isn't simply the billboard ad (as that doesn't show each time) and must be caused by something else. Can you confirm that it happens whichever type of ad is served - ie whether its a regular sized one (leaderboard), the fat one (billboard) or a wrap around one?

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 01/07/2016 21:19

it jumps on every page I open

if i click the thread header, the topic, talk, discussion of the day, threads I am on...even clicking on the last person to comment which loads the last page...that jumps too

am on a laptop with google chrome if that helps, I do have an ad blocker, and am not unloading it as then I get the ad noises/video/youtube chatter on odd occcasions

but it is each click i make, wait for it to load, wait for it to jump, scroll to choice of thing...lather/rinse/jump/repeat

plasticboxesrock · 01/07/2016 22:07

It jumps on every page for me too. I use an ad blocker partly because the sorts of ads I've seen in mn in the past just piss me off quite frankly and also, I just hate ads.
If you can do anything at all to improve the situation I'd be grateful. Using the app in an iPad is nowhere near as good as the desktop site especially since the settings function is broken and still not fixed and I do not really understand why they are so different in any case. The jumping gives me a headache, pisses me off and makes me want not to bother.

BIWI · 01/07/2016 22:49

I'm sorry Justine, but have you read the thread? Lots of us have said that it jumps with or without ad blocker.

I have absolutely no problem with you taking advertising, and I doubt that the vast majority of us would say that you shouldn't. But if it's about taking money at the expense of a smooth user experience, then that really is worrying. Because that's about you not caring about the people who use your site. And, please don't forget, the people who generate user content for you.

Not good enough.

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 02/07/2016 07:27

Jumps on every page I open too. With or without ad blocker. And not on any other sites. Really really annoying. It's a very slow jump, too, so you are just about to click when you think something should be, as you've assumed it's ok, and then it moves.

Now today, the topic lists are coming in a big long list (the way it sometimes does when it's really slow internet connection, so it's even harder to find what you want, scrolling through it all, and then it moves. I'd almost got used to clicking on 'eBay' to get 'chat', or 'style and beauty' to get 'secondary education' or whatever, but that's a stupid way to run a site. And doesn't work with the long list anyway!
