Why does the desktop site page keep jumping around?! It's driving me crazy!

I have an adblocker, so I'm guessing it's because of ads. I have no header, the MN logo is still not back (Why not?) but now the fecking page keeps jumping, taking far too long to get into position, so that I think I'm clicking on one thing and then end up clicking on something entirely different as the page jumps down.

I have about 3" of white space at the top of my page (hence thinking it must be something to do with ads) - but WHY must the page JUMP??

The site is becoming hugely frustrating with all this jumping and resultant mis-clicking!

Please do something about it (and bring back the logo, goddammit!)

Hi all

Thanks very much for flagging this, it does sound frustrating!

Please can you let us know what device you're using, and what browser please? We'll then flag to our ads team and ask if there's anything they can do.

Thanks for bearing with us on this one Flowers Brew

Hi all - thanks for posting. There are a few people having this issue on the mobile site.

Could we just ask you all to do a quick test for us? If you disable adblocker, does it still happen? We've had a few people say it stops, in which case we'll need to look into why that's happening. Thanks all.

BeccaMumsnet · 23/02/2016 13:23

Hi all - thanks for posting. We're going to get this info over to Tech and see if we can find out what's going on.

BeccaMumsnet · 25/02/2016 12:20

Hi both - which pages does it happen on for you?

If you disable Adblocker, does it stop?

DawnMumsnet · 29/02/2016 18:33

So sorry to hear this is still a problem for many of you.

We know that our Tech and Ads teams are still trying to address this issue. If anyone hasn't posted to say which device etc. they're using, please list below. At the moment, it seems to be happening across the board though. Sad

Again, we know this is a royal pain and we're really sorry.

DawnMumsnet · 09/04/2016 15:34

Afternoon all,

We're so sorry that this is still a problem for many of you.

We thought this had been resolved last week, but clearly the site's still jumping around so we've asked our Tech team to see what's going wrong again.

We'll get someone to report back as soon as we can.

DawnMumsnet · 26/05/2016 11:33

So sorry that this problem is still ongoing. Sad

Our Tech team are still working on this - we've asked them for another update and will report back as soon as possible.

KatherineMumsnet · 30/06/2016 10:13

We really do apologise for this - we've nudged tech and will come back to you once we have an answer. Thanks so much for your patience!

KatherineMumsnet · 01/07/2016 11:16

Hi again everyone, tech are in talks to see what can be done about the way the site runs, as in the current format there isn't anything they can do to prevent this happening. We really do appreciate your patience, and know this is far from ideal. Bear with us, it won't be immediate, but we are very aware that this a huge irritation for many of you.

Hiya,
The page jumping down after loading what's known as a billboard ad (ie the wide big rectangle at the top of the page) is a pretty standard thing. If you go on the Guardian, Times or Telegraph sites exactly the same thing happens.

We tend to have billboard ads on a fewer pages than those sites do, so it won't happen as often (roughly I'd say about 1 in 5 pages). The speed of our jump is the same as the Guardian's and is slower than the Times and Telegraph's. We can certainly speed it up which might make it less noticeable and you less liable to miss-click, and are happy to give that a try.

It doesn't have anything to do with the font change - it's just that we introduced the new ad format (billboards) at about the same time. We don't have billboards on mobile but I think the jump there happens when you refresh the page - this again is pretty standard - you'd expect to go back to the place you were and the jump is a jump down to the point at which you were viewing when you refreshed.

It seems from this thread that it's more of a problem with an ad blocker - probably it's just more noticeable because the ads don't fill the space. There's not much I can say to that other than the obvious!

We do need to show ads to pay for the running of the site and billboard ads are the current format of choice for advertisers. I'm aware that with sub-optimal connections all display advertising can lengthen page load times but the truth is we can't survive without ads unless we start charging for use (which is a whole other can of worms). We will, I promise, continue to monitor our page load speed and make it a priority to keep optimising it to be as slick as possible.

We'll also trial speeding up the page jump and see if that improves the experience.

Sorry not to be the bearer of better news!

@TondelayaDellaVentamiglia

hah...silkandsteel I felt that comment was just a pat on the head and being told to run along now as the grown up were busy with Important Things

Really? Oh dear, that wasn't the intention. Apologies if that's what it felt like. If it's jumping every page for you then the problem isn't simply the billboard ad (as that doesn't show each time) and must be caused by something else. Can you confirm that it happens whichever type of ad is served - ie whether its a regular sized one (leaderboard), the fat one (billboard) or a wrap around one?

RebeccaMumsnet · 04/07/2016 11:29

Hi all,

Tech has put in a fix to try and help this today, can you let us know how you get on please? Is it still as jumpy?
Any feedback would be great.

ShamTech · 04/07/2016 17:43

Hi all. We found a definite source of the page jumping and have now made a fix. Please do report back here if you're still having issues. Thanks for your patience and help.

ShamTech · 05/07/2016 11:03

As far as I can see, the only remaining thing that makes the page jump is when the large size ad appears at the top of the page. I've recorded this short video to illustrate.

If you are seeing the page jumping around and it's not related to the large ad at the top, I'd be grateful if you could record it somehow (maybe with your phone pointed at your computer screen) and email it through to us.

Thanks

ShamTech · 06/07/2016 16:36

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia thanks for the videos. It looks like your adblocker is switched on which is why you get the blank space at the top of the page and also why the system is confused about what size ad is being served.

Could you please see if you still have this problem on every single page when your adblocker is switched off, as there's not much we can do if it's switched on.

Thanks again for taking the time to record the videos. Much appreciated.
