Heads up - new MN ios Talk app is shortly to be released into the app store

Hi Folks,
Our new Talk app is now live in the App Store. If you used the old app and didn't delete it then it should auto-update (depending on your settings) but otherwise you can download it from the app store.

This is a obviously a first live version - we plan to keep updating it, adding new features and addressing any user issues, so all feedback is most welcome.

Plus, we are planning to build an Android version too in the next few months - thanks for your patience re that Android users - we'll keep you updated on the progress and will be looking for Android testers in due course.

Hooray, I've been really looking forward to having an app again!

Just downloaded. Looks good. Very contemporary. Wink

@mermaidbutmytailfelloff

Sorry but its a big fat no from me, I can't make the text big enough to see.

PLEASE can you address accessibility issues? I have blathered on about this before several times and am just ignored. Not everyone has perfect sight and those who haven't need customisable text size and contrast.

Hello mermaidbutmytailfelloff,
We have designed with accessibility in mind. The colour choices within the app include a high contrast option and in future we are looking at adding other colour theme options. We’ve also made sure the app works with iOS accessibility functions like voice over and dynamic text size.
Would you mind giving it a go customising your text size and colour? We'd also love to have your input on testing future updates if you'd be up for that.

MissRainbowBrite · 25/09/2015 18:53

I'd love to have the search function back too, I used it lots and it was really useful to be able to refine by date/topic.

ophiotaurus · 25/09/2015 18:56

Can anybody answer about the lines between posts?

CodeComplete · 25/09/2015 19:14

I'm an Android developer in my day job - are you looking for devs or outsourcing to an agency? I would LOVE to work on this app as I've been a lurker on mn for coming up to 10 years. Dream job Grin

Flumplet · 25/09/2015 19:27

Yeah well done mn techers- I been testing the new app and it's been working really well especially these past few weeks, I'm really pleased with it!

trendytoes · 25/09/2015 19:45

Search function pleaseSmile

PolpoPolpo · 25/09/2015 19:58

I've been testing it recently too and love it, much better than the old app. Obviously advanced search would be great but am happy to wait - I'm just happy to have Mumsnet back as the mobile site wasn't loading for me for weeks.

FortyFacedFuckers · 25/09/2015 20:07

I really liked the app when testing so off to download now. Grin

Emochild · 25/09/2015 20:17

HuckfromScandal · 25/09/2015 21:36

Loving the new app.
So user friendly
Thanks mumsnet!!

imnottoofussed · 25/09/2015 21:50

How do I watch a thread on the app?

Simurgh · 25/09/2015 22:05

To the right of the thread title, imnottoofussed. You'll see an arrow there - swipe it to the left as you would do wtih bookmarking a post. It has Watching as one of the options.

tapdancingmum · 25/09/2015 22:13

I am liking the look of it and thank goodness for password cracking tools as I had to sign in and for the life of me could not remember my new password! Grin

Simurgh · 25/09/2015 22:16

I thnk it's a very good App. The only thing it could really do with is some way of getting to PMs, otherwise I'm adjusting to it well and some features such as the pictures are actually better than the main site.

If you're considering a Search function, MNHQ, could you consider a new policy on thread retention to make it an easier prospect? Some 50 threads a page would give AIBU, for example, a thread count of close on 170,000 threads If I'm calculating correctly. How many posts - or words! - they would contain makes my brain hurt and would surely be a pig to search on any system. I think it might be time for a change there.

eurochick · 25/09/2015 22:26

I like the look of it but how do I refresh a page, eg active? I can't work it out.

justcallmethefixer · 25/09/2015 22:49

On the old app if I had read a thread then closed the app it remained a different colour. On the new app when I close and reopen threads I have already looked at are the same as threads I have not yet looked at.

I like knowing which threads I have already opened as hen I know to scroll or not bother clicking
Ps I like how strike throughs now show as I type Smile

WotNoLoobrush · 25/09/2015 22:51

Sorry to pester MNHQ, but as someone has mentioned Android anyway: Please can you give us an idea of when the android app will be available? TIA

MountainDweller · 25/09/2015 23:10

I have been testing too and I love it. Much better than the old app and am grateful that it's easier to read. Mobile site was terrible for me as I'm on an oldish iPad and the pages took forever to load. If I may... One thing I would change about the new app is that if I leave the app by clicking on a link, when I come back the thread I was reading has closed and the app has reverted to active threads. Not too bad finding it again if I've remembered to watch the thread before I leave but still a pain if it's a long thread with lots of scrolling to get back to where I was. And I agree with pp, would like to be able to see previous posts when replying.

justcallmethefixer · 25/09/2015 23:30

The old app didn't seem to have a limit to active convo's, this one seems the same as the mobile site. I preferred to be able to keep scrolling instead of refreshing or looking a topics

PeteTech · 25/09/2015 23:42

Thanks all for the feedback, appreciated. Smile

Obviously the app is still a work in progress, so we're diligently making a note of what people have to say.

MountainDweller Quick tip for you: when replying you should be able to close the "New Post" screen and go back to the thread to have a look. Then when you press "reply" again, what you've written so far should still be there. If not, let us know and we'll look into it.

If you've bookmarked a particular post, you can tap the "show bookmarked post" button at the bottom of the New Post screen to see it without closing (or the OP if you haven't bookmarked). You'll see that button if you tap outside the text box to hide your keyboard.

MrsWembley · 26/09/2015 06:35

What you've just said there, Pete, to Mountain, I did not know that; the bit about closing the new post page entirely, that is, not the show bookmarked post...

TestingGrin

Well, bugger me!Shock

DorothyL · 26/09/2015 06:46

On threads I'm on it just shows the title and number of posts - would be better to show the latest post to see if there's a reply

HellKitty · 26/09/2015 07:59

Loving it!
I like the way 'threads you're on' changes colour with a new comment or after you've caught up. Seriously missed MN, I'm one of those who lives on the phone app so rarely got a go on the website version.

That's not to say I reply when having a poo or anything like that, absolutely never...ever...

imnottoofussed · 26/09/2015 08:53

Thanks simurgh
