What happened yesterday?

I can't find any explanation of why mn was down. With the odd redirect and the history of the site over the summer, it would be rather good to have an explanation please.

I am also wondering what happened. I sent a tweet but no response. It makes me a bit twitchy, this ongoing situation.

WyrdByrd · 22/09/2015 08:49

I'd like to know what's occurring too - partly from a security POV but also out of frustration. I've been a huge MN fan for years but it's so unreliable lately that virtually every time I've tried to get on the site is down Sad.

CloakAndJagger · 22/09/2015 08:50

I should imagine we've not heard anything yet because the site came up in the early hours when most of MNHQ, and U.S., were asleep in bed.

I should imagine a meeting this morning to go over what happened before they post to let us now. It's not even 9am yet. Give them a chance.

GrouchyKiwi · 22/09/2015 08:50

A full English sounds marvellous.

CloakAndJagger · 22/09/2015 08:50

U.S? I meant us.

JustineMumsnet · 22/09/2015 08:51

Hello all,
The problems yesterday were caused by an internal tech error - which resulted in the entire database being erased. That meant we had to restore it from the latest back up, and that took quite a few hours, as it's huge. We may have lost a very small amount of data - i.e. some of the posts just before the database was wiped.

I haven't gone into the ins and outs of it yet as lots of people were up very late last night but it definitely wasn't an outside attack, and we're confident that what allowed the error to happen has been fixed, so it shouldn't happen again.

Many apologies for the outage. I really hope it didn't inconvenience anyone too much.

TheSecondOfHerName · 22/09/2015 08:55

Thank you for the update.

SheGotAllDaMoves · 22/09/2015 08:55

Active posts are still crashing the site. Or for me at least.

ginmakesitallok · 22/09/2015 08:56

Thanks Justine

MissFitt68 · 22/09/2015 08:57

Yeah it's still not working very well. At all

How come other large forums don't have this stuff happen?

margeys · 22/09/2015 09:00

When I came back on this morning, the first thing I saw was a pop up asking me to vote for this as the best website. MN is well designed, but it has to work.

JeffreysMummyisCross · 22/09/2015 09:01

So basically, Jeffrey and chums are constantly monitoring Mumsnet for any outage so that they can hit the Twatter button to claim that they've hacked the site. How pathetic. They must have a serious vitamin D deficiency by now.

noblegiraffe · 22/09/2015 09:05

Omg can you imagine the horror at realising you've just deleted the database Shock

bexcee8 · 22/09/2015 09:13

Least we know why nowSmile
Anyone else not able to use the app since the last security compromise?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/09/2015 09:15

Omg can you imagine the horror at realising you've just deleted the database

Indeed. Grin

Rosebag · 22/09/2015 09:15

Tee hee MrsS I do worry about the Crepey threads addiction that I have developed. I must have tried to log on about 100 times last night. Grin Glad we're back up and running.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/09/2015 09:16

Jeffrey started a new Twitter page...and in one comment made it clear that he was responsible for the outage. Whether the was just jumping on the bandwagon remains to be seen.

LadyStark · 22/09/2015 09:22

Thanks for the update.

In future, you really should provide regular updates on Twitter and/or Facebook. People like information, not being kept in the dark.

Racundra · 22/09/2015 09:23

O RLY missfitt? Have you never had the 'fail whale' then?

NoisyOyster · 22/09/2015 09:24

Poor tech

It's hard enough to restore an iPhone from backup, can't imagine the pain the ass it must be to restore a whole website!

Tirfarthoinn · 22/09/2015 09:26

Hmm, I once lost the entire contents of a memory stick, doesn't quite equal an entire database but it was the end of the world at the time Grin

WhataRacquet · 22/09/2015 09:28

When I got on to the site just now it took me straight to a thread saying "AIBU to get this site shut down for bullying" it was from 2012 I think Confused instead of the home page.

I agree that updates should be posted on Twitter.

HoneyDragon · 22/09/2015 09:29

Oh, now I'm cringing. I have done similar. It was not a good day.

Sgtmajormummy · 22/09/2015 09:33

"Website of the Year", my foot!

MrSlant · 22/09/2015 09:37

Oh god, poor tech, that must have been one of those cold chills all your blood pooling in your feet moments. Here have a nice Brew, we've all done it. Well, not quite on that scale but nevermind Grin.

I read an entire book last night.
