I can't find any explanation of why mn was down. With the odd redirect and the history of the site over the summer, it would be rather good to have an explanation please.

I've just cleared my cache and can get onto AIBU now. This is how to do it on Firefox:

Firefox

1 From the History menu, select Clear Recent History. ...
2 From the Time range to clear: drop-down menu, select the desired range; to clear your entire cache, select Everything.
3 Next to "Details", click the down arrow to choose which elements of the history to clear; to clear your entire cache, select all items.

For the last step I deselected everything but cache and that worked.

Brilliant! thanks QueenStromba - and for the crib sheet Smile

@ouryve

What I'm more curious about is, why is there not the usual banner saying "MNHQ have commented on this thread"?

That's sorted now ourvye

The site appeared to go down again this morning. Is this related to your move to DSC's CMS or has that already happened?

Given the length of time the restore took, is it time to reconsider your policy on archiving threads? Most of the data you've restored will never be viewed by anyone again.

I doubt the problem was someone accidentally deleting the whole database and probably more about managing this much data on what I also suspect is a very ancient platform.

PseudoBadger · 22/09/2015 10:33

"Omg can you imagine the horror at realising you've just deleted the database"

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 22/09/2015 10:33

I've just cleared my caches and I can now access AIBU Smile.

rumbleinthrjungle · 22/09/2015 10:34

I can access everything fine from iPad but laptop is still showing the mumsnet is down screen. Have cleared cache, hasn't helped.

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 22/09/2015 10:39

same here. I just cleared my cache and it hasn't helped

LadyStark · 22/09/2015 10:41

Appreciate there may have not been much to say but given recent hacking issues regular reassurance to your users has huge value. Also, your last post was it should be up soon and then when people are checking 5/6 hours later they don't always know if it's still a site problem as opposed to a local user problem.

It doesn't take long to send a tweet with either a more accurate update - we will be back in the morning/whenever or assure people it's an internal tech issue that you're working hard to resolve.

If you create a void it will be filled - in this instance by Dadsec taking credit for it on Twitter.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 22/09/2015 10:44

I had to restart my laptop before I was able to get anything other than the mumsnet is down screen only restarted because I was doing something else, restarts and here you all are and have been for hours

rumbleinthrjungle · 22/09/2015 10:44

To add: can open everything on iPad but it's buggy, slow and keeps losing the page and needing to be reloaded.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/09/2015 10:44

LadyStark, indeed, Jeffrey clearly got a kick out of that last night..!

rumble, could you look at the url at the top of the page you're on on the laptop? Does it still read www.mumsnet.com/tempproblem.html ?

If so, could you try deleting the /tempproblem.html bit and hitting refresh again?

It may be that you have a window open from yesterday. If that's the case, and it still contains the temp problem url, whenever you refresh it, it's just going to refresh that url IYSWIM. If you delete the extension, you should hopefully get the live version of the site, from which you'll be able to access everything.

Have a go and let me know?

Point taken, LadyStark. What happened last night was that we thought from about 7pm that things were just about to restart, but the goalposts kept moving. We didn't update, as we honestly thought we were within striking distance, so an update seemed redundant. Given Jeffrey, we ought to have kept more of a running commentary; you're right. Sorry for that.

rumbleinthrjungle · 22/09/2015 10:51

That's the url Sarah, however every time I delete the temp problem section and refresh it goes straight back to temp problem again. Have deleted all browsing histories and re started. Explorer is the browser if that helps.

SarahMumsnet · 22/09/2015 10:52

thanks rumble - and rats. Will get tech on it!

rumbleinthrjungle · 22/09/2015 10:54

Thanks Sarah Brew

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/09/2015 10:54

Well, I was getting the Site Down page ntil half an hour ago, so was unaware it had been up and runnng for hours!

A message on Twitter/fb when it went back on would have been helpful

Hey there - I have BrunoTech back again. He says: can you try opening a private window? Here's how:

Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button.

In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.

Click the Tools button, point to Safety, and then click InPrivate Browsing.

If you can see Mumsnet as it should be in a private window, then the issue is with your browser not having cleared the cache/cookies fully; it could be that you've only cleared the cache for the last hour, for example (there are a number of different timeframes available). In that case, could you go into settings, change the length of time over which the cache is cleared, and try again?

rumbleinthrjungle · 22/09/2015 11:11

I can see MN thatvway so it is a cache issue. Sigh. However no amount of clearing history seems to work and no times settings are apparent. Thanks for the help.

tribpot · 22/09/2015 11:14

Incidentally, I got in, read the post from Justine and then returned to the same URL about half an hour later and saw the holding page. Same machine and browser.

NorbertDentressangle · 22/09/2015 11:19

Clearing the cache on my laptop (Chrome) has worked and I can now see Active Convos.

This has also resolved the problem on my phone without me doing anything to it.

BoffinMum · 22/09/2015 11:36

If you could tweet the odd chirpy thing once an hour (not necessarily even talking about tech) during outages it would be very reassuring for the MN addict community. It felt like a black hole yesterday. I imagined this alternative universe where you had just evaporated and that was it. Nothingness.

Thanks,
Boff xx

HoHeyChick · 22/09/2015 11:40

I would also like to know

MrsUltracrepidarian · 22/09/2015 11:51

Well that don't emnd well.
Using the in private has lost all the stuff I need for other, more useful logins like google.
Thanks a lot Hmm
