Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

Well thank feck for that - they may be nasty colours, but at least OP and my own posts are now different colours, and I remain free to tackle the complex issue of whether to watch a thread all on my sodding own .

This load of cock up took up a disproportionate amount of my grumpy headspace over the past 24 hours. I had even started scratching around for a replacement time wasting forum upon which to bestow my pearls of wisdom.

I have enough RL bollocks without change on here too!

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 17:25

YAY separate colours! Thank you :)

green is still a teensy bit bright...

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 17:27

But the grey/lilac (hard to tell) is nice. Perfect.

magimedi · 06/08/2015 17:29

Can someone please tell me where you find the page that tells you which version of Mumsnet you are using?

I thought it was on customise, but it doesn't seem to be there any more.

ConcreteElephant · 06/08/2015 17:38

Thank you ever so for the return to two different colours.

I don't want to be demanding (these colours are better than no colours) but if you are open to feedback on the colour choices then the green appears garish against the blue/grey/purple tones of the rest of the site.

I used to have the lavender colour and steel I think? My choice obviously but it did sit nicely.

It is in customise magi , I just went on there to untick the boxes for emails and watched threads. It should tell you at the start of the page . There are two little circles. The one by whatever you are using is shaded in

mummylin2495 · 06/08/2015 17:49

Oh maybe as Maryz says , that if you are already on new you can't change. I like classic ( don't like change )

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/08/2015 17:53

Yep, I was on new and just looked in customise and option to revert to classic is now gone.

Since they changed my colours anyway ( aaaaaargggh, the GREEN) I have opted out of the 'add every thread to my watched' thingy

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/08/2015 18:03

Also, just posted on the other thread that I've discovered that the colours look v different depending which device is being used.

On my ipad, using desktop via Safari, I have violent green and pale washed out mauve

On my phone, using mobile site via safari, the green is v v muted and more grey than green, mauve is pinker.

THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO PCK OUR OWN COLOURS, THEY LOOK VERY DIFFERENT DEPENDING ON DEVICE, OPERATING SYSTEM AND WHETHER USING DESKTOP, MOBILE SITE OR (presumably) THE APP

Jux · 06/08/2015 18:13

I remember feeding Techs biscuits and gin. They were shackled iirc. Didn't stop them enjoying themselves: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/food_and_recipes/703965-The-most-dangerous-cake-recipe

And we always hated changes to the site, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/food_and_recipes/703965-The-most-dangerous-cake-recipe and www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/851455-AIBU-to-hate-the-new-format for examples.

However, the pink you have now saddled me with makes me want to vomit, and the green is vile and hurts my eyes.

I want my lovely dark green back, and I want it NOW!!!!! Stop pissing about, you lot.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 06/08/2015 18:20

Why on earth would anybody want threads they're on added to threads they're watching? You're not getting rid of 'threads I'm on', are you? Hmm

Who on earth could possibly like the new colour scheme? It's vile and losing the ability to customise colours will have worsened the accessibility of the site for lots of people.

AuntieStella · 06/08/2015 18:21

I deliberately didn't fiddle with my settings, because I wanted to keep the colours I had chosen.

But they've now gone.

I hate the colours imposed on me.

Not impressed.

AmberFool · 06/08/2015 18:30

Why have my colours gone? Sad My beautiful pastel colours for OP's posts and my posts. I HATE the green. Changes should be not choice limiting.

TheTravellingLemon · 06/08/2015 18:33

Mine is all still the same pastels, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I just don't get why.

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 18:35

anyone with simages left today, can you do a screenshot of what your colours look like to you?

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 18:36

ah GrinGrinGrinGrin

I'm nickel again!!!!!!!
my colour is nickel again!!!!

which is weird, because i've literally jsut posted on a thread where my colour was olive green.... Confused

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/08/2015 18:36

It seems to depend which device you are using Lemon. Atleast, it does for me.

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 18:41

nickel again.

emotionsecho · 06/08/2015 18:45

MNHQ are determinedly ignoring the points raised on this thread and clearly aren't prepared to enter into a discussion. Attitude seems to be "You'll get what you're given and be grateful.' Like all organisations they steadfastly refuse to admit they might have got it wrong and reverse the changes.

cozietoesie · 06/08/2015 18:46

Same colour as mine, nickelbabe - from that picture, I make it a paleish purple.

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 18:47

to be fair, they have changed the colours back to our chosen colours

and this green is nicer than the green i had before...

Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming
nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 18:48

paleish purple, i suppose it is at some angles Grin

SoupDragon · 06/08/2015 18:49

Attitude seems to be "You'll get what you're given and be grateful.'

That is really unfair. In general they take far more notice of what "we" want than any other site and often ask and listen to opinions about stuff like advertisers and it's also how we ended up with so many options such as "MN Classic" in the first place.

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 18:50

Oh interesting. They have changed them back yes (or it's coincidence) but they aren't exactly the same shades. The purple is paler and less saturated (and I like it) and the green is brighter (a smidge too bright as it jars when I open a new thread).
