Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

OK. I'm going in. If anything else goes to shit, I know who to blame...

cozietoesie · 10/08/2015 14:15

I think you know in your heart of hearts, eh?

Maybe start a book on the date?

cozietoesie · 10/08/2015 14:17

Well you can blame Bore and Maryz. Are you taking life support? Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/08/2015 14:18

TVM Amy

Another glitch I have noticed is if you click any of the links beneath 'In The News' on the right there >>>
you get 'page could not be opened server not working' message and have to use back button to get back.

And Maryz is a v naughty girl Grin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/08/2015 14:18

Nope. Still no option to get rid of the bogie. Angry

Bakeoffcake · 10/08/2015 14:19

Cozie I don't know what I'm onBlush
but at the moment all the threads are ticked with "watch this thread" but if I don't post on it it doesn't watch the thread.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/08/2015 14:20

Nothing has changed since I last went in, so I had no need to tinker again - thankfully nothing has changed merely by me looking at it so I'm no worse off.

Just no better either.

Bake, try clicking 'watch this thread' at the bottom, where it has start, watch, flip, hide, refresh

cozietoesie · 10/08/2015 14:25

Thumb inside Customise?

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/08/2015 14:26

Ha ha, you lot! just cos you're too wussy to go in yourselves :P

Bakeoffcake · 10/08/2015 14:38

Thank you Maryz and Bore. That's what I aways used to do but had forgotten about it. I need a new brain! Grin

cozietoesie · 10/08/2015 14:47

Not at all, Thumb. I've already been in to Customise and fixed things. Smile

(Already a New user though.)

Charis1 · 11/08/2015 07:41

don't want to plough through 30 pages so this may have already been said repeatedly, but it is very easy to stop all those emails going into your inbox by going into your email account and setting it to class anything from mumsnet as junk.

My account was totally overwelmed, but it has all gone now.

the only problem will be if I need to search my "junk" for something, as it now has hundreds of emails from mumsnet in it. But if it becomes an issue will just set the account to delete anything from mumsnet completely, as soon as it arrives.

SoupDragon · 11/08/2015 07:50

Or you can just opt out. I don't get 100s of emails.

Charis1 · 11/08/2015 09:25

opting out didn't work

SoupDragon · 11/08/2015 11:09

Must have worked for me.

prettybird · 15/08/2015 15:06

Really DON'T understand why threads you post on are now being added to "Threads I'm watching"? What's the point - except to clutter up hreads I'm watching with lots of extra threads? Confused

"Threads I'm on" means that you are able to threads you post on (d'uuuh Hmm). "Threads I'm watching" is for interesting threads which you HAVEN'T got around to posting on yet and may never do so

LittleBearPad · 15/08/2015 19:24

That has been asked many times Pretty with absolutely no response from MNHQ. It's very frustrating.

prettybird · 15/08/2015 20:09

I realised it had: but having just had to take time clearing out my "Threads I'm watching" so that I could actually see the "Threads I'm watching" HmmConfused, I thought I'd add my frustration Angry

LittleBearPad · 16/08/2015 00:27

I'm sorry pretty I think my own frustration at mnhq ignoring the many questions on that point came out and I didn't phrase my post very well. Sorry for any apparent grumpiness. It wasn't directed at you.
