Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

BeccaMumsnet · 04/08/2015 12:52

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

Changed it back, when?

I've got revolting green as OPs posts & lavender as my posts.

I used to have lavender & pink!

nickelbabe · 06/08/2015 18:53

Mine are the same, diddl - but then I had revolting green for the OP originally.

Has anyone got their correct OP's colour back?

cozietoesie · 06/08/2015 18:54

As I undersrabd it, there are now 2 default colours, nickelbabe - so I doubt it.

cozietoesie · 06/08/2015 18:55

*understand

TheTravellingLemon · 06/08/2015 18:57

Ahh, I'm on the android mobile site.

cozietoesie · 06/08/2015 18:57

PS - unless they had, by coincidence, chosen the same two colours for the same type of posts of course.

Flaperon · 06/08/2015 18:59

I'm afraid I hate the new colours. The green is too bright and too noticeable when looking at MN at work which is why I originally chose grey and blue.

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 19:00

Yes I think mine is coincidence looking at the rest of your posts.

I agree the green is too bright. Hang on I'll try a screenshot experiment thingy.

mathanxiety · 06/08/2015 19:00

Having read a few threads, my eyes are hurting so much from that new, improved green that I have had to root out my glasses.

MardyBra · 06/08/2015 19:00

Oh for fuck's sake. I read the first two pages and switched off the auto thread watching. Does that mean I'm stuck with the lurid green OPs for ever.

After all these years I should have learnt to RTFT.

MardyBra · 06/08/2015 19:05

And why has TIO gone funny with so many replies showing.

Sorry if this has been said before. Am on holiday and just logged on for first time in a few days due to lack of decent wifi. I'm not wading through 560 replies but just wanted to add my general sense of pissed-off-ness to the thread.

cozietoesie · 06/08/2015 19:06

Maybe they should give users the MNHQ blue as a poster default colour and MNHQ can use the green? Their posts would sure stand out. Grin

MardyBra · 06/08/2015 19:07

Oh and MNHQ, you've been talking about topic reform recently. Please don't make lots of arbitrary decisions on that!

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 19:09

Nah we've been asking about TIO but they haven't answered yet.

Okay here is a rough comparison of greens. Left is the current green. Right is where I took a colour pick of the blue for thread headers, pulled the hue along until it was green, it was still a bit bright, so I pulled the saturation down. It looks much better IMO, still noticeable but not as jarring. The HTML code for the colour is #e5fcf6 if of any use :)

Although, admittedly, I believe that green will vanish on laptop screens. That's an issue with colours close to cyan because laptops are usually terribly colour corrected. I can't check because mine's broken :(

MissDemelzaCarne · 06/08/2015 19:16

How can this possibly be described as an "improvement"? Hmm

LittleBearPad · 06/08/2015 19:21

I've lost my pink OPs Sad but at least they've chosen the purple I had for me which means on the mobile view everything looks the same.

I don't understand the green choice. It doesn't work at all well with MN's branding and looks amateurish.

I also don't understand why they've removed the options as on the new iOS apps that's being tested you can choose your colour scheme.

But as MNHQ clearly can't be bothered to respond I shall no doubt continue to be confused.

diddl · 06/08/2015 19:24

I also had pink and purple.
Happy to still have the purple, but the green just clashes!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 06/08/2015 19:28

I don't want 18 posts on my TIO, I don't like the colours, I don't want TIO on TIW (I've opted out now but I can't imagine why anybody would want that option in the first place). It seems like you're just making changes for the sake of it.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, life moves pretty fast, it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

OK so that was your thinking but did you actually ask if people wanted it? And why do the colour change at the same time? These are unrelated changes, surely?

If it's too much having so many colour themes, why not just make a more limited list of choices - but still let people choose - and ditch the rest of the changes. I know it's a general human trait to react badly to change of any sort but I really can't see what you are trying to achieve with this.

emotionsecho · 06/08/2015 19:34

Soup in this instance that quote for me sums up their attitude they have not come back to this thread and answered or addressed any of the questions or comments made by the site users. Other threads that have been started in relation to these issues have a message from MNHQ directing them to this thread for information and answers and there are none. There is a distinct lack of communication and input from MNHQ.

MrsVamos · 06/08/2015 19:49

The lack of communication is probably because the changes are more buggered up than they were with the mobile site when it went live. Took days to communicate and try to sort all the issues out, and some were just left, never to be rectified.

There are threads in AIBU and SS clearly showing that the majority of users in the last couple of days aren't happy with improvements, and mnetters cannot work out why HQ & Tech felt changes needed to be made.

HQ posted on another thread earlier that the blue bar on the mobile site you used to be able to get rid of by tapping the 'x' now has no 'x' to tap and you can't get rid of was being looked into.

Its still there.

Also as stated by another pp, that mnetters are being directed here for answers.

Of which there are none.

Monumental muck up again.

I'm not techy at all, and I'm sure its hard to do all these upgrades etc, while 'live' ? but its just daft to not keep users informed.

MangoBiscuit · 06/08/2015 19:52

Bertie, that pale green shows up just fine on my laptop. Looks much nicer than the weird-retro-bathroom-mint-green that I currently have. Is also not making me feel sicky whilst reading, which is a big bonus.

MangoBiscuit · 06/08/2015 19:54

Bleugh! Just seen the purple. Bad MNHQ, Bad!

MrsVamos · 06/08/2015 19:59

Perhaps Maryz could start her CUNTS thread, and one asking HQ & Tech to please just admit its gone a teeny bit wrong ? Grin

Powaqa · 06/08/2015 20:00

My colours have changed and I haven't even been into customise.

The green is too bright and I find it hard to read, I have eyesight issues and the new green has made it worse
