Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

What is this threads I'm watching fresh hell? Why am I watching everything? I'm not Big Brother. FFS. I HATE CHANGE.

Hassled · 16/08/2015 21:05

I ventured in to Customise and things changed just because I looked at them. I fucking hate this tinkering with stuff that's not broken malarkey - am well hacked off.

I won't go near "Customise" after the comments on here.

I LIKE my Mumsnet Classoc appearance and my colour settings.

Hassled · 16/08/2015 21:26

And these bloody great big social media buttons are pissing EVERYWHERE - it's probably only moments before I Pinterest some shite thread because the cat has jogged my arm. And I don't even use Pinterest.

MAKE IT ALL GO AWAY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Trending's back. Change and decay in all around I see. Sad

Charis1 · 16/08/2015 22:23

"Trending's back. Change and decay in all around I see" it is absolutly cringe-worthy, isn't it.

TalkingintheDark · 16/08/2015 23:18

Yes, also very disappointed to see "trending" back again. FFS.

mathanxiety · 16/08/2015 23:20

Not only is Trending back, but my Discussions of the Day lineup hasn't changed for three days now.

Fiderer · 17/08/2015 07:56

I didn't lose Classic but the big social media media buttons appeared after I went in to Customise to unclick "Automatically watch threads I'm on."

And I've been back in since to check - and in Classic there is no option to remove social media. Wouldn't mind if they were somewhere else below the posting box but being right above it they hit me BANG in the eye every time I get to the end of the thread.

I get why they've been added but I don't understand why there are 15 options in Classic but not for the irritating buttons.

Fiderer · 17/08/2015 08:09

Meant to add, I opted out of the s-media in Classic before, when s-media was introduced. Can't be hard to re-install the option, surely?

Is Classic that different from New these days? In the screenshots above it looks very similar.

I realise that there's a principle involved! Wink

Fiderer · 17/08/2015 11:38

I think if they did want to do away with Classic, they would have. The "Muted for work" & other view (wasn't there one?) have gone.

I see no reason why the opt-out for social media option is available on New but not Classic. If anything it should be the other way around - the Newers being more likely to use it than us Classic gimmers Grin

I'm thinking of starting another futile thread about the bloody drop-down menus. Plaited pregnant woman and deranged-looking spaghetti dog et al.
They stop me MNing on my Kindle because if I swipe one by mistake it fills most of the screen and swiping again often brings me to the section when I don't bloody want Pregnancy. Or Education - I come on here to avoid thinking about that one.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/08/2015 14:28

What now??!! we won't be able to use Classics? Shock
why? what the actual fuck?Angry
is that bloody Jeffrey's final revenge?

MNHQ

if it ain't broken don't fix it so don't bloody mess with Classics!

BertieBotts · 22/08/2015 19:55

Not Classics, Classic. Mumsnet skin. Not a board. Don't worry!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/08/2015 07:51

phew...thanks Bertie
I don't know what mumsnet skin isConfused

BertieBotts · 23/08/2015 13:27

A skin is like a different look for a forum, different colours, fonts etc.
