Mumsnet ads

So, as you've noticed we got a new bunch of people supplying us with ads on a kind of loop if we don't sell the space. Probably time for a discussion on what we can live with and what we can't. Especially as I'm at a wedding tomorrow and then on hols for 2 weeks and won't have to be involved .
So tell us who you a) dislike b) can't bear c) veto or you're off.

(Over to you Olivia!)

no greggs

SecondhandRose · 11/08/2006 07:40

You advertise what you like, its nothing to do with us. Sounds like MN needs all the money it can get at the moment. We can just ignore what we don't like.

tigermoth · 11/08/2006 07:51

no formula milk/no political ads - how mumsnet is that!

The ads mentioned so far seem ok to me in the short term - including the ultralase one and the 4x4 one. Review the situation if and when the threat of legal action goes away.

FrannyandZooey · 11/08/2006 07:57

Good choices, Justine, I think you have thought of most things that would get people upset.

Erm, I know it's not very likely, but maybe it's best not to have ads from childcare gurus who might have a new book out? Not thinking of anyone in particular, of course...

rosaparks · 11/08/2006 08:18

ROFL at Custy!

Ladymuck · 11/08/2006 08:29

Hopefully the MN census will help you with getting the right sponsors. Have to say that i seem to use a relatviely high number of your exisiting long-term ads (Boden, White Company etc). Have to say that I miss Amazon, but see why you pulled it. Any chance of Ocado?

Could I also suggest that your shopping page is linked to from the sidebar of the homepage. I do have it bookmarked on one pc but if I try to find it on another I seem to get lost (esp with the Kiddicare shop!)

TheMorningPaperFanClub · 11/08/2006 08:32

I really, truly don't care as long as no nestle/formula mainly because the resulting fall out would give me a headache .
otherwise, I don;t have any particular concerns.

GeorginaA · 11/08/2006 08:36

Not fussed here either really.

Out of taste I don't really like the flashy moving ones (because I feel they become more intrusive that way), but then again if it gets you lots of cash they don't annoy me that much... just if you have a choice of two equally well paying ones - go for the more tasteful one please

I don't think I mind although I can see why people had a problem with formula ads. I wouldn't be thrilled to see McDonalds or Fruit Shoots advertising here but it's not my site and no ad on earth would persuade me to buy them so I guess I should shut up!

Have just clicked through and bought a load of Boden stuff btw.

Have a lovely holiday Justine!

SoupDragon · 11/08/2006 08:52

Stop whinging and get an ad blocker if you don't like them. I don't see any ads at all.

Anything short of missiles and formula milk I guess.

zippitippitoes · 11/08/2006 09:01

I seem to have them blocked too, don't know how..I don't really think it's for me to say, but I will express an antipathy towards online gambling and celebrity endorsed loans, but wouldn't now go as far as to say don't have them because people can choose to a)see them and b)click thru.

Perhaps those could be restricted to the Men's Room, Fio.

Justine, thank you for consulting us about this - it's very much appreciated.

Haven't seen any so far except for P&O, C&G and the 4x4 ad (which made me LOL) but I agree with those who would consider plastic surgery ads to be a no-no. I don't want to come on Mumsnet and be invited to mutilate myself!

(Incidentally, re. the argument that it doesn't matter what you have because if you don't want to see them you can block them, I see what you mean, but on the other hand, some people just don't have the technical ability to block stuff, or else they need to keep unblocking because otherwise the sites they need to use don't work. Also, would you use this argument to mean it's also ok to have formula ads? Just interested.)

nutcracker · 11/08/2006 09:57

I noticed the 4X4 ad yesterday but didn't dare start a thread LOL.

Non of the ads bother me really tbh.

Tutter · 11/08/2006 10:30

couldn't give a hoot

JackieNo · 11/08/2006 10:34

Happy for pretty much anything, as long as it helps MN continue. Quite like having Robbie Williams pop up (so to speak) at the top of the page from time to time.

zippitippitoes · 11/08/2006 10:35

on fios theme not keen on hoodia ..the spam is enough

Lio · 11/08/2006 10:43

Happy hols Justine and well done, I think you've been ace over this whole you-know-what thing.

Ads don't tend to offend as I mostly ignore them, only the cosmetic surgery one has given me the creeps. Don't even care about 4x4s or formula milk, both of which I have an opinion on.

ssd · 11/08/2006 10:47

same as lio as above!

have a very happy holiday Justine and hope you get to relax a bit!

PS thanks for mumsnet!

MarvellouslyMilitantPeachy · 11/08/2006 10:57

They're all fine imo. 4X4's are a bit annoying, but then plenty of M-netters live where 4 X4's are sensible , so why on earth not? (Having bee living in a Somerset village myself until moving here, $ X $'s do ahve a plce, just not on the surburban school run).

Take what you can at this time, I say. And hey, if I could afford laser eye surgery my eyesight and hence myt yping might make sense for once LOL!

I suspect you're looking in from your holiday atm (Naughty!), makesure it's a good one

X

serenity · 11/08/2006 11:07

Not bothered by any of them really. Don't really notice them, tbh most of them are out of my league financially (Boden, White Company etc)

I'd be very uncomfortable with loan ads (like the ones you're bombarded with on Nick Jr!) and with any Gambling/Poker/ Spearmint Rhino type things, but I would be very surprised to see them on here any way.

I still haven't seen the 4x4 or Ultralase ones, out of the two the plastic surgery one bothers me as being a little inappropriate, but then I just won't click on it.
