I don't think I have ever had prune jam. It must exist though mustn't it. A dark conserve for dark times.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/01/2013 13:19

MN really does seem to be drifting to the miserable and humourless these days.
I very rarely come on for advice and support, the couple of times I did I got it.
I come on for a laugh, and Greensleeves thread did just that.
I really think those with no SOH should avoid these type of threads.

LoopsInHoops · 22/01/2013 13:19

Are prunes not just dried plums? Wouldn't it be plum jam?

Absy · 22/01/2013 13:20

I can see how OP is upset - cake is a serious thing, and a joke thread about throwing away perfectly good cake, unthinkable! It's offensive to us suffering people who haven't eaten cake in a while and would kill for some.

seeker · 22/01/2013 13:20

Nowt wrong with joke threads, and letting them stand. My beef was with MNHQ apparently joining in. Which, as can be seen from their reply to me on that thread, they think they shouldn't have either. So all sorted, as far as I can see, and here's to the next one........

Good to see so many names from the past on here, by the way.

Flossiechops · 22/01/2013 13:21

The rules also state that name changing in order to mislead is not allowed either. Mn knew the op had done this and yet it still stood. I really couldn't care less about the thread but what I don't like is that it implies that one rule applies to the clique of regulars and one rule to everybody else.

frasersmummy

WHY do you want other adults to come and tell you what to do?

WHY?

It's never been a grey area before Puddle. This is the first time there has been any sort of mayhem over a joke thread.

Most of the time Mumsnet governs itself and that's what I like about it. We are self-moderating. Most posters knew when a joke thread came around and those who didn't and got taken in, usually saw the funny side in the end when the poster came clean.

Under your definition they should have been banned, but nobody minded and we all shared a laugh and some classic threads were born.

It would be such a shame if that self-moderation were to end now and we were faced with rigid rules that did not allow for humour, community, shared jokes and fun.

It's a shame that some posters can't let this one be. I fail to see what harm it did and I fail to see why they would want Mumsnet to be so rigidly moderated.

As I said before, what on earth has changed?

Hullygully · 22/01/2013 13:22

I have never seen so many prissyknickers tightly bunched together in one place.

You'll all get thrush.

ThereAreNoBirdsHere · 22/01/2013 13:23

One should always make their own prune jam. So sugar levels can be monutored.

Even in dark times one must regulate. (well unless you wash it all down with prune juice. It might all be to regular then)

Slubberdegullion · 22/01/2013 13:23

Loops but prunes are g&t plums aren't they, so prune jam would be plum jam +2 bowel power.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/01/2013 13:24

Flossie, you are allowed to namechange, if you want to talk about something and don't want to be recognised.
MNHQ believed that the Op was very controlling about cake, but it was hardly trolling.

THERhubarb · 22/01/2013 13:24

Flossie, if you were to change your name and start a joke thread it would be allowed to stand.

This is nothing to do with regulars.

This was an unspoken loophole that has stood for the past 12 years and in those 12 years many many posters have changed their names and posted joke threads and not one person has kicked up an almighty fuss about it before.

Regulars and non-regulars have all benefitted from the liberal attitude of MN and now that is under threat because of what?

RandallPinkFloyd · 22/01/2013 13:24

(Can I just add, after TSC's post, that I have no idea what the OP's views on rape are, I'm just going on this thread and a couple of others I've seen.)

frasersmummy · 22/01/2013 13:24

I was deceived and misled. Pulls up prissey knickers. Grin

BitBewildered · 22/01/2013 13:27

but if there is a rule in place that wind-up threads are not allowed then it should be used across the board and not just in an ad-hoc manner

I think the use of judgement is appropriate. I don't see why this can't be done on a thread-by-thread basis. I hope think that if it was a regular poster messing about and people started emotionally investing or being hurt, that the NC-ing OP would immediately make it clear that it was a joke thread. I suppose in this case she thought she was on safe ground, because it was about cake.

IWorshipSatin · 22/01/2013 13:27

Rhubarb - absolutely. So why was the brilliant King Tut thread 'moderated', and indeed a whole heap of other hilarious, harmless threads? Why was the cake thread treated differently?

BIWI · 22/01/2013 13:28

Please don't start the 'regulars' vs 'newbies' again.

ThereAreNoBirdsHere · 22/01/2013 13:28

Ive just name changed and am now wittering on about prunes.

Can someone report me please.
