Afternoon.

Might be helpful to recap/clarify a few things, to start with.

First of all, as we have (blushingly) admitted on the orig thread, we didn't realise it was a windup. We received lots of reports asking us if the OP was a troll, saw it was Greensleeves, boggled a bit at her crappy baking skills and ranty mood, and then posted to reassure folks that she was a regular MNer and we sure she wasn't a troll.

We also then deleted some trollhunty posts. As we would do, in any situation where we believed a genuine poster was being called a troll.

We then left the thread to go on its merry way.

It was only later in the evening that we realised it was a wind-up.

If we'd realised it was a wind-up from the beginning, we wouldn't have posted. And would probably have replied to those reporting to say the OP wasn't a troll but we suspect it was a regular having a bit of a larf.

We are sorry for not being smart enough to have rumbled Greensleeves straightaway. And we're sorry some folks assumed from our post that we were somehow in on the act.

However, we really do think there is a massive difference between a light-hearted, non-malicious wind-up like this and a 'proper' trolling thread. As several posters have pointed out here, there was clearly no intention to be malicious or creepy/pervy/abusive, and no agenda to persuade people to divulge personal info/hand over money etc etc.

And yes, amillionyears, we have removed one phrase from the Talk Guidelines about trolls (the 'for the hell of it' bit) as we realised late last night that it could be misinterpreted as 'for a bit of a joke', when that's not what we meant at all. It was disingenuous of me not to mention that when I quoted the Guidelines on the orig thread this morning - and I do apologise for that.

There are probably some other points on this thread that we should answer. We'll have a look through now.

We'll also be deleting the personal attacks. Whatever your frustrations - and we can see there are plenty! - they're really not on.

@IWorshipSatin

I am confused - with the cake eating thread MNHQ realised (after the fact) that it was a regular on a wind-up, admitted they were taken in by it, but then went on to seemingly endorse it and did not delete it.

Yet the King Tut thread, which was just as amusing (moreso in my opinion) and a lot of people had invested time and energy in, was just deleted without reaching the conclusion that the cake thread was allowed to reach.

(Yes I'm still bitter about the King Tut Denouement being snatched away from me!)

So, genuine question, what's the difference?

There is a difference here, we think.

The 'KingTut' threads were started by a newbie - who said she'd be on MN for a year. Which rang alarm bells with us at MNHQ. There wasn't just one thread full of silliness but thread after thread, pulling more and more posters in. We have no idea what the OP's intention was but, taking into account her lack of posting history, her clear attempt to deceive, and the fact that we know some trolls do specialise in spinning out a seemingly innocuous story over many threads, we thought it was right to delete.

With Greensleeves' thread, we knew who she was and we thought she was just ranting about cakes. We did not 'endorse' her thread, knowing it was a windup. We only realised it was a joke about the same time everyone else did.

And we haven't deleted it because it was a one-off wind-up and it was pretty funny. Even if it makes us at MNHQ look like twits.

@THERhubarb

Bet I don't cocking well get deleted now.

MNHQ you are a bit of an idiot!

Delete me now. Please.

Yes indeed we are. (And I bloody wrote an extended essay about Alfred the Sodding Great at uni.)

And no. Shan't.

Hello

Sorry to hear about the burglary, Hully

I know we've all moved on and are talking about ... things

But just wanted to say:

Please report
We love reports
We love reports about posts that you think are attacking you
We love reports about posts that you think are attacking other posters
We love reports about spam
We love reports about trolls
We love reports about trolls who turn out to be regulars

We just really do love reports.

We do not think reporters are prefects, or sexually frustrated, or PO, or bored. We think they're people who like Mumsnet and want to keep it running reasonably smoothly, and see reporting as a way they can contribute to that.

Just wanted to get that on the record, really.

So, you know, to summarise: please report.

Thanks Thanks
MNHQ x

@KatieScarlett

"Disingenuous" MNHQ?

That's just rude. A non confession of culpability)

(Team Millions on that issue)

Well, it certainly wasn't meant to be rude.

Disingenuous means "not candid". Which was exactly what I was culpable of being. And what I apologised for.

I quoted our Talk Guidelines about trolls, without disclosing that they had been very slightly tweaked last night.
