Hello. We hope you all already feel you can talk to us at MNHQ anytime - either by starting a thread in Site Stuff or by mailing us or reporting a post.

But we also thought it might be useful/interesting to have a live discussion about how how about we do things re moderation etc...

So, we're hosting our very own MNHQ live webchat!

Please do join us at 1pm on Thursday to ask (more or less) anything you want. And, if you can't make then, do feel free to post a nice question here in advance.

yep, much lighter touch needed IMO.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:04

@MaryZed

Yes, moderation is too heavy. Too many deleted posts for stating facts, whereas passive-aggressive whingy pokey posts stay.

Give me an eg of deletions for stating facts?

We would delete passive aggressive too btw, if it's clear that's what it is - just report it.

SuePurblybilt · 04/10/2012 13:04

What about if we ask for it to stay? Say I am attacked and report it myself saying 'leave them, they're not worf it' - can it stand? As a Terrible Warning?

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 13:04

But Justine - don't you think that leaving other posters to deal with personal attacks demonstrates that we don't tolerate it on MN?

Blatherskite · 04/10/2012 13:05

Please, please, please. please, purleeeessee can we have an Evil Grin Smiley?

I need one

TIA

SuperB0F · 04/10/2012 13:05

Hide Poster button please: not compulsory but would cut down on fights and goading, and reduce your workload.

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 13:05

Yes, Sue - I think that's absolutely how it should work

Sparklingbrook · 04/10/2012 13:05

Has Mumsnet turned out the way you had envisaged when you founded it?

FancyPuffin · 04/10/2012 13:05

Hi Justine and Helen

As we have had so many trolls lately would you consider revisiting my brilliant idea that all members have their joining month and year on their profiles or hoverer thingy (proper technical name), at the moment anyone can opt out.

This would confirm whether someone was a longstanding namechanger or a newbie (not that all newbies are trolls but lots of trolls claim to be namechangers) have confused myself now Hmm

Also can I come to the office and be in charge for a day pretty please Grin

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:05

@Hullygully

Can I have a prefect badge?
Only if it hasn't got my name on it Smile
KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 04/10/2012 13:05

Ok - more serious Q.

Is there anything that can be done about AIBU as I've pretty much given up on it as a topic. There seems to be some self-styled leaders of the topic who seem to rock up on every thread just to be an arse.

I hate it when people trot out a version of "well it is AIBU so what do you expect", because, actually, you can tell someone they are being unreasonable without being an utter cunt about it.

Also, there do seem to be different posting rules, particularly in regard to a couple of the well established posters, where they can piss about across the talk boards putting posters down and derailling threads as much as they want and seem to get away with it because of who they are. It pisses me off.

I'll have you know I've been here since 2002, Puffin

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:06

@SheelaNeGig

I'm going to be asleep. Not because you are boring but because I will be awake all night catching babies.

Anyway.......

  1. Can you please clarify The Rules regarding freds about freds.
  1. When will be be getting a Cake?

Thanks

Freds about freds. Ok, it's fine to start a thread that's connected/inspired by another thread.

What's not fine is to start a thread to insult/mock/trollhunt about posters on another thread or to rehash deleted posts from another thread.

eff off you c is very extreme

fair enough delete that, but now everythign gets deleted.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:07

@TheAngelshavetheOod

I like this one

Who would you really like to get on for a webchat but haven't been able to persuade?

George Osborne. He told me "I'm not stupid" when I asked him. To be fair think he has a point.

But he has promised he'll come. We even shook hands on it. So that should be fun.

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 13:07

Can we have an organogram [corporate speak] for who does what at MNHQ?

MaryZed · 04/10/2012 13:07

Facts like "you are being insulting and abusive". That's a fact, not a personal insult. I have no problem with you deleting "you are a cunt" or "fuck off". But not "your post shows you to be bigoted", when the person is being bigoted, and I have given examples of why s/he is bigoted.

Do you see the difference?

In the old days "you are a cunt" would go but "you are bigoted" or "your opinions are arseways" would stay.

FancyPuffin · 04/10/2012 13:07

I've been here since 1983 Sue It was quieter then.

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 13:08

I hope you washed your hand in Domestos, Justine

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 13:08

what maryz said^^

exactly

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:09

@FunnysInLaJardin

yep, much lighter touch needed IMO.

Actually, as Justine posted not so long ago, deletions have actually gone down, not up:

"Out of interest we've checked the deletions thing and surprisingly the number of deleted messages seems to have dropped not risen year on year - even though traffic is up by more than 40%
(these include messages deleted from deleted threads - so one long thread = 1000 deletions)

Jan 1st 2011 to May 29th 2011: 81884 messages
Jan 1st 2012 to May 29th 2012: 72037 messages"

Yes, I agree, we ought to try and distinguish between these two. It's certainly our intention too. But it's not always easy in the heat of the battle. Will Helen add to this (as she's more often battling than me, these days)
