Hello. We hope you all already feel you can talk to us at MNHQ anytime - either by starting a thread in Site Stuff or by mailing us or reporting a post.

But we also thought it might be useful/interesting to have a live discussion about how how about we do things re moderation etc...

So, we're hosting our very own MNHQ live webchat!

Please do join us at 1pm on Thursday to ask (more or less) anything you want. And, if you can't make then, do feel free to post a nice question here in advance.

Ok My first question was a tad shallow hoping for gossip Blush but seriously, when you first had the thought of MN did you have any idea the direction it would take? Did you hope it would influence women in the way it has or was that something that just developed as the site grew? By that I mean, I had never really thought too deeply about rape myths, MN has opened my eyes, likewise with domestic abuse I am ashamed to say as a child I used to partly blame my mum for being abused, please don't flame me for that but having read so much on MN I realise what a victim blaming approach I had. Did you ever imagine you would have such an influence on people?
What was your original hope for the site? (I know that "hope" isn't the right word but can't think of a better one)

@Hullygully

Justine, is it too late to change your initial post on this to say it's the long awaited comm mngmt discussion?

No indeed - it certainly was inspired by that - and we'll change it.

senua · 04/10/2012 09:40

oh, sorry x-posts

OatyBeatie · 04/10/2012 09:43

Oh bother, if you change the op it will make me look like a numpty for posting off-topic.Grin I thought my question came under the category of "etc.", but clearly this webchat is for issues other than the one I asked about.

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 09:43

Can I have a prefect badge?

MaryZed · 04/10/2012 09:46

Oh, maybe we should be a bit more serious.

I have asked for a "support" section for niche threads - a bit like OTBT but not deleted after a month. I would really like to see that, to stop repetitive bunfights on sensitive threads.

I also think that some of the trolls need to be dealt with a bit differently. I'm not convinced that "ignore and report" is working, because if we ignore innocent newbies get drawn in and the troll has a field day. I know it's difficult for mnhq to prove it's a troll, but I think the suspending of threads was a good idea (pity it didn't work Grin).

I would like to see the topic list drastically reduced - there are some poor people posting in the right topic and being completely ignored Sad, whereas other attention-seeking fuckwits get lots of advice which they usually ignore in aibu.

Finally, I don't suppose it's possible, but does "most active" have to include the threads/topics I've hidden - I keep getting drawn back by Most Active into threads that I should really know to stay out of Blush.

I'm sure I'll think of a few more.

P.S. No to a "like" button. Even a "trial of a like button" or a "choose if you want it like button" or any sort of a like button at all. Ta ever so.

SuePurblybilt · 04/10/2012 12:58

Are we open again? GoodO.

Clunch Quiche over here >>>

Sparklingbrook · 04/10/2012 12:59

Afternoon.

Cinnamonkey · 04/10/2012 12:59

please can you try to promote the local sections a bit. I ended up going over to netmums looking for local info/friends etc, but it made my eyes bleed so I had to leave the site before I could get any useful info. The local sections are a bit tumbleweedy

TheOneWithTheHair · 04/10/2012 12:59

Ooh it's open. Marking my place. :)

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 12:59

Ok so we are here (well, Helen's in the loo) and very, very conscious we better not be late. So will be firing away almost instantaneously.

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 12:59

Hurrah!

Sparklingbrook · 04/10/2012 13:00

Jaffa cake anyone?

SuePurblybilt · 04/10/2012 13:00

Now I was here first so I am clearly the most important.

I just have to think of an intelligent question....

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 13:00

Right then

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 13:00
Sparklingbrook · 04/10/2012 13:00

Ummmmmm

SuePurblybilt · 04/10/2012 13:01

Bullying By Hully. That'll be the subject of my question.

MaryZed · 04/10/2012 13:01

I put my questions ^^ up there.

Non-disappearing alternative to OTBT?

Rearrangement of topics?

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 13:01

Ok, let us debate moderation.

Go back to how it used to be with the much lighter touch.

We are not children.

If people are persistent arseholes, ban or shoot them

MaryZed · 04/10/2012 13:03

Yes, moderation is too heavy. Too many deleted posts for stating facts, whereas passive-aggressive whingy pokey posts stay.

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 13:03

Come on, Justine - type faster!

[impatient]

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 13:03

Am I alone?

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:03

@Hullygully

Stop the mad deletions.

Do not delete unless the insulted wants it. Most of us would rather let the insulter's fuckwittery stand.

Ok so let's start with deletions as a few folks have asked about that.

The problem with leaving fuckwittery unless someone asks for it to be removed, is what about they're not looking in - or have disappeared in a cloud of offendedness? I suppose we feel we are trying to promote a culture of reasonably civilised debate - so leaving eff off you C - even if it proves how unreasonable the insulter is, would give the message that that's ok on MN. So no personal attacks is where we've ended up.

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:03

@RatherBeOnThePiste

This is all very interesting, but what I'd actually like to know is Team Hooker or Team Knit?

Team Knit. Although I could be a pathetic sub on the bench of Team Hooker.
