HelenMumsnet · 03/10/2012 18:27

Hello. We hope you all already feel you can talk to us at MNHQ anytime - either by starting a thread in Site Stuff or by mailing us or reporting a post.

But we also thought it might be useful/interesting to have a live discussion about how how about we do things re moderation etc...

So, we're hosting our very own MNHQ live webchat!

Please do join us at 1pm on Thursday to ask (more or less) anything you want. And, if you can't make then, do feel free to post a nice question here in advance.

HelenMumsnet · 03/10/2012 18:33

@SuperB0F

Blimey, you're brave!

Is this some kind of forfeit you agreed to in lieu of drinking a yard of ale at the meet-up or something?

Ha! Actually, I think I did drink a yard of ale at the meet-up Blush

HelenMumsnet · 03/10/2012 18:56

@Sparklingbrook

Is an hour long enough?

Knew this was a baaaaaaaaad idea...

OliviaPeaceAndLoveMumsnet · 03/10/2012 22:20

@TodaysAGoodDay

Can we get a 'hide topic' button as well as the 'hide thread' one please? I have no interest at all in some subjects, and would love my 100 Active Topic threads all to be interesting to me without me having to hide hundreds a few of them each time.

Ooh I can answer this one - you can already do this.
In customise ^^ choose your topics wisely my friend.
HTH

OliviaPeaceAndLoveMumsnet · 03/10/2012 23:34

@cocolepew

Night shift, is someone actually in HQ or can they work from home? Is there someone watching what's going on all night?

Sleep is for the weak....Grin

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 09:31

Oh, this is going to be fun Smile.

Loathe as I am to clip anyone's wings, can I humbly suggest we focus mainly on the community management side of things if we're going to have any chance of getting questions answered. Either way, those are the things we're going to address first - that's why I've got Helen here - she's head community team honcho, in case anyone didn't know. Am very happy to come back to do more strategy/policy type chat, if I can't get to those questions today.

Now, fearing that this will become a teeny bit unmanageable in terms of volume, I'm going to lock this thread in a bit until it's time for the chat so we can get on with some other stuff

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 09:39

@Hullygully

Justine, is it too late to change your initial post on this to say it's the long awaited comm mngmt discussion?

No indeed - it certainly was inspired by that - and we'll change it.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 12:59

Ok so we are here (well, Helen's in the loo) and very, very conscious we better not be late. So will be firing away almost instantaneously.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:03

@Hullygully

Stop the mad deletions.

Do not delete unless the insulted wants it. Most of us would rather let the insulter's fuckwittery stand.

Ok so let's start with deletions as a few folks have asked about that.

The problem with leaving fuckwittery unless someone asks for it to be removed, is what about they're not looking in - or have disappeared in a cloud of offendedness? I suppose we feel we are trying to promote a culture of reasonably civilised debate - so leaving eff off you C - even if it proves how unreasonable the insulter is, would give the message that that's ok on MN. So no personal attacks is where we've ended up.

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:03

@RatherBeOnThePiste

This is all very interesting, but what I'd actually like to know is Team Hooker or Team Knit?

Team Knit. Although I could be a pathetic sub on the bench of Team Hooker.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:04

@MaryZed

Yes, moderation is too heavy. Too many deleted posts for stating facts, whereas passive-aggressive whingy pokey posts stay.

Give me an eg of deletions for stating facts?

We would delete passive aggressive too btw, if it's clear that's what it is - just report it.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:05

@Hullygully

Can I have a prefect badge?
Only if it hasn't got my name on it Smile

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:06

@SheelaNeGig

I'm going to be asleep. Not because you are boring but because I will be awake all night catching babies.

Anyway.......

  1. Can you please clarify The Rules regarding freds about freds.
  1. When will be be getting a Cake?

Thanks

Freds about freds. Ok, it's fine to start a thread that's connected/inspired by another thread.

What's not fine is to start a thread to insult/mock/trollhunt about posters on another thread or to rehash deleted posts from another thread.

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:06

@SuperB0F

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:07

@TheAngelshavetheOod

I like this one

Who would you really like to get on for a webchat but haven't been able to persuade?

George Osborne. He told me "I'm not stupid" when I asked him. To be fair think he has a point.

But he has promised he'll come. We even shook hands on it. So that should be fun.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:07

@Hullygully

eff off you c is very extreme

fair enough delete that, but now everythign gets deleted.

Like what? Give me examples...

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:09

@FunnysInLaJardin

yep, much lighter touch needed IMO.

Actually, as Justine posted not so long ago, deletions have actually gone down, not up:

"Out of interest we've checked the deletions thing and surprisingly the number of deleted messages seems to have dropped not risen year on year - even though traffic is up by more than 40%
(these include messages deleted from deleted threads - so one long thread = 1000 deletions)

Jan 1st 2011 to May 29th 2011: 81884 messages
Jan 1st 2012 to May 29th 2012: 72037 messages"

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:09

@MaryZed

Facts like "you are being insulting and abusive". That's a fact, not a personal insult. I have no problem with you deleting "you are a cunt" or "fuck off". But not "your post shows you to be bigoted", when the person is being bigoted, and I have given examples of why s/he is bigoted.

Do you see the difference?

In the old days "you are a cunt" would go but "you are bigoted" or "your opinions are arseways" would stay.

Yes, I agree, we ought to try and distinguish between these two. It's certainly our intention too. But it's not always easy in the heat of the battle. Will Helen add to this (as she's more often battling than me, these days)

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:10

@BigStickBIWI

Can we have an organogram [corporate speak] for who does what at MNHQ?

Really?
Ok but not now as they always break my machines [wretched things]

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:11

@SheelaNeGig

3. How come I never win competitions?

Aw, I'm sorry. It's all done automatically by some clever robot name-puller-out-of-the-bag. Nothing we can do to get your name to pop out first - although we hope it will soon.

At least you're allowed to enter the comps; MNHQ aren't Sad

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:12

@ChristmasKate

What are your views on locking a thread whilst you are investigating it, thus giving us slow coaches a chance to catch up before it all starts getting deleted, if it needs deleting in the end at all?

That could help with the Fred about the Fred, what happened to.....

Yes, we have actually installed the ability to lock a thread so we can do this. It just doesn't work properly at the moment.

As I found out to my huge embarrassment one Saturday night. Blush

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:12

@BigStickBIWI

But Justine - don't you think that leaving other posters to deal with personal attacks demonstrates that we don't tolerate it on MN?

Well it's a fair point. But would self-moderation be consistent? Would newbies and oldies be treated alike? Interestingly we've been chatting to some of the other big forums about how they moderate (money saving expert, AV forums, Pistonheads, The Student Room, the Guardian). Most actually have volunteer, not paid, moderation teams. Certainly made me think Grin.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:15

@Iggly

On a more serious note though please can we improve the local pages/boards? I'm a tsarina thingy but didn't get any info on how to update the pages etc. new mums come here looking for info like baby groups etc but end up on nethunsmums as it has much better info.

It's coming, honest. And it's really not far away. We have a new Local Editor, Emma who's busy making loads of improvements. (I'll ask her to get in touch direct.)

Everyone else watch this space!

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:15

@MrsWembley

I think you're all lovely but why can't you have a Christmas bash outside of London? In Bristol, perhaps?

Thank you re loveliness. Aw.

We don't organise the bashes, Christmas or otherwise. We leave that to others much more capable than us. Though we're not averse to coming along and drinking the bar dry

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:17

@FrankWippery

Sadly I'll be at the dentist (really truly sadly) so will miss the fun.

Just wondering, like, what the monthly consumption of gin is with you at MNTowers. Also, does the weekend consumption at least quadruple the weekday total?

Who eats the most biscuits and what are your favourite ones?

Pertinent questions I feel. Ta.

Monthly consumption of gin = shocking.

Weekend consumption of gin = truly shocking.

Chief Biscuit Eater = used to be Justine. But now is probably me. Blush

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:18

@Narked

What can we do to make your lives easier in HQ? Aside from discussing nothing but recipes. And not things to do with a mango Wink.

What a sweet question Smile. Erm, be nice to each other, share stuff, tell everyone how great MN is, buy our books, go the Academy courses (they are fantastic btw), use new Local when it comes, click on ads, report transgressions, fill in surveys, give feedback. Kind of all the stuff you do anyway most of the time.

Oh and shout at us less Grin.
