Hello. We hope you all already feel you can talk to us at MNHQ anytime - either by starting a thread in Site Stuff or by mailing us or reporting a post.

But we also thought it might be useful/interesting to have a live discussion about how how about we do things re moderation etc...

So, we're hosting our very own MNHQ live webchat!

Please do join us at 1pm on Thursday to ask (more or less) anything you want. And, if you can't make then, do feel free to post a nice question here in advance.

He told me "I'm not stupid" when I asked him

Have you looked at the economy lately? I beg to differ.

OrangeandGoldMrsDeVere · 04/10/2012 13:09

Can we have tickers?
BIG ones.
I am serious.
Everybody shut up.

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/10/2012 13:09

OK. I got deleted for calling someone smug. I don't see how that is a personal attack. It is a comment about a persons attitude, but it's not an attack

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:10

@BigStickBIWI

Can we have an organogram [corporate speak] for who does what at MNHQ?

Really?
Ok but not now as they always break my machines [wretched things]

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 13:10

While I do not doubt your marvellous statistics, there are a lot of us oldhands who notice a very different feel and approach.

Why might that be then?

MaryZed · 04/10/2012 13:10

I recognise it's difficult.

But it seems to me that if it is reported (even if it is reported by someone very precious), the default is to delete (for fear of being accused of leaving attacks).

I'd like to see the default to be NOT to delete, only delete in extreme circumstances.

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 13:11

Oh, alright, just tell us who does what!

ChristmasKate · 04/10/2012 13:11

What are your views on locking a thread whilst you are investigating it, thus giving us slow coaches a chance to catch up before it all starts getting deleted, if it needs deleting in the end at all?

That could help with the Fred about the Fred, what happened to.....

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:11

@SheelaNeGig

3. How come I never win competitions?

Aw, I'm sorry. It's all done automatically by some clever robot name-puller-out-of-the-bag. Nothing we can do to get your name to pop out first - although we hope it will soon.

At least you're allowed to enter the comps; MNHQ aren't Sad

MrsdeVere, I would not have directed you here had I known Shock. Tickers, ffs.

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 13:11

I think your answer above to Maryz's, answers my last question.

FancyPuffin · 04/10/2012 13:12

Please please please could you swop it so that fightclub AIBU is deleted in 90 days and _chat, which always has the funny threads stays forever.

BigStickBIWI · 04/10/2012 13:12

I agree re the deletions and it does, sometimes, feel like your mum or your teacher is doing stuff on our behalves, which is actually pretty patronising. Surely an attackee should decide whether or not an attack should be removed?

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:12

Yes, we have actually installed the ability to lock a thread so we can do this. It just doesn't work properly at the moment.

As I found out to my huge embarrassment one Saturday night. Blush

MaryZed · 04/10/2012 13:12

Yes to ChristmasKate's "thread locking".

And leaving threads to be deleted, with explanation at the bottom for 24 hours would stop the fredsaboutfreds.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 13:12

@BigStickBIWI

But Justine - don't you think that leaving other posters to deal with personal attacks demonstrates that we don't tolerate it on MN?

Well it's a fair point. But would self-moderation be consistent? Would newbies and oldies be treated alike? Interestingly we've been chatting to some of the other big forums about how they moderate (money saving expert, AV forums, Pistonheads, The Student Room, the Guardian). Most actually have volunteer, not paid, moderation teams. Certainly made me think Grin.

wisden · 04/10/2012 13:13

ChristmasKate I'm sure they tried that in the last week or so but it didn't work

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/10/2012 13:13

the other issue is that a lot of us 'ole timers' just don't report as we deal with any issues on the thread. Tis how we have been brought up. Some newer member report anything and everything

MrsKwazii · 04/10/2012 13:13

Organogram tickers? Wink

Sparklingbrook · 04/10/2012 13:13

I think a week is plenty for AIBU, never mind 90 days.

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 13:13

I think it would be consistent, the vast majority of us are decent and kindly and step in where necessary.

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 13:14

yy funnys

absolutely

MaryZed · 04/10/2012 13:14

Yup to Funnys - I don't report personal attacks on me. Ever.

Yup to deleting AIBU after 30 days as well.

wisden · 04/10/2012 13:14

x post with HelenMumsnet Grin

Narked · 04/10/2012 13:14

What can we do to make your lives easier in HQ? Aside from discussing nothing but recipes. And not things to do with a mango Wink.
