Hello. We hope you all already feel you can talk to us at MNHQ anytime - either by starting a thread in Site Stuff or by mailing us or reporting a post.

But we also thought it might be useful/interesting to have a live discussion about how how about we do things re moderation etc...

So, we're hosting our very own MNHQ live webchat!

Please do join us at 1pm on Thursday to ask (more or less) anything you want. And, if you can't make then, do feel free to post a nice question here in advance.

so have I got this right probably not we can say "you are sounding like a bigot/racist/twat etc but we cant say "you are a bigot/racist/twat etc?

is that right?

TantrumsAndBalloons · 04/10/2012 14:24

tbh honest, sometimes twat is the only appropriate word ;)

MaryZed · 04/10/2012 14:25

So can we say "your posts on this thread are ridiculous" if they are then?

Because that is causing the problem. You say we can, but if we do, we are deleted.

For example, Funnys' "you sound smug to me" and my "your opinions are bigoted", and similar.

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:26

@FunnysInLaJardin

thats what I used to love most about MN, the self moderation, because if you were actually being a nob you could be sure someone would come along and tell you. All very satisfactory.

Whereas a simple 'you sound smug to me' was enough to get deleted t'other day.

Anyhoo I think that point has now been made over 1000 times, so I'll leave it Ricky

By self-moderation, we don't mean to say that you folks are the moderators and can tell people they are nobs. We mean that when one person posts a load of nonsense, in your opinion, you are quite free to post your different and opposing opinion.

So, Christ this is exhausting. I'm almost feeling sorry for the politicos now. Almost.

Thanks to all for your contributions - on this chat but of course, more widely - and for making this place what it is (whatever that is Wink).

ps We will be back!

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 14:27

I think it is easiest to err on the side of caution and that's what happens, that's why stuff gets deleted by caution-minded fingers.

MaryZed · 04/10/2012 14:27

Have a lovely nap, Justine (and Helen).

Or some Gin

Smile

Your post on this thread are ridiculous = fine. not deletable.

"You sound smug to me" = not so fine. "Your posts/argument sounds smug" is fine, depending on the context of course.

ie you can attack the opinion but not the poster/person.

OP posts:
TantrumsAndBalloons · 04/10/2012 14:28

so, would you have to say "you sound like your opinions are bigoted" or "you sound like you are smug"?

head explodes with the effort

Can I just say I was deleted yesterday for calling myself names. That was amusing

FancyPuffin · 04/10/2012 14:28

Thanks Justine and Helen

SheelaNeGig · 04/10/2012 14:28

Wjo is your favourite?

And look i am awale. Can i have a gold star please.

FrankWippery · 04/10/2012 14:28

Yes I think there are Helen, but sometimes, you know....

I think 'you are a....' is perhaps a bit much mostly, but when someone is being an absolute arse about something, I'm not sure that the odd 'You are a twat in this context...' is necessarily a bad thing.

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 04/10/2012 14:28

Ignored again...

Now I know I'm on the OTW list.

SheelaNeGig · 04/10/2012 14:29

And why do long threads do the weird delayed phone thongy.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 04/10/2012 14:29

You have a whole category of your own SBD

Blatherskite · 04/10/2012 14:29

Poor old Justine and the other MNHQers can't even say "thanks, the webchat was fun but we'll be off now" like most webchat suckers guests do as we know they're all still sitting there :)

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 14:30

A BRILLIANT IDEA

How about deleting NASTY personal attacks?

eg: You are a right cunt = not ideal

God you sound smug = fine.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:30

@Blatherskite

So true Smile
Mind you I reckon everyone looks back on, don't you?

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/10/2012 14:30

well Helen I suppose that's what I meant really about being called a nob. Perhaps not literally but if you posted a load of nonsense then you would get pulled up on it. I appreciate that actual name calling is not on.

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:31

Thanks. It's been real but I will collapse without my lunchtime biscuit and gin quota, so we must go.

Do please mail us anytime on [email protected] or report a post if you'd like to keep arguing the toss about deletions you have any other Qs.

OP posts:
FrankWippery · 04/10/2012 14:31

Arf Blathers!

Excellent webchat though, thank you. I think we should have one every few weeks or so; it's good to have lots of questions being answered in one place.

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 14:32

If someone says:

People on sickness benefits are scrounging bastards with big tellies

They deserve to be told they are arses, not just countered with

Well, actually I think they aren't

It doesn't cut the mustard.

Hullygully · 04/10/2012 14:32

Oh yes

You said we could have these regularly

I made a note

TantrumsAndBalloons · 04/10/2012 14:33

Yes but in context. Cos you can call someone a cunt on a less serious thread, joking around.
And that was deleted yesterday too.

It was a joke I hope

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:34

What's so hard about saying "your post makes you sound like an arse and here's why" and then proceed to demolish with powerful argument?
