Ok, that's enough now MNHQ

Stop it with the mad deleting.

RebeccaMumsnet · 29/05/2012 16:09

@AnyFucker

I have rarely reported stuff against myself either

And yet, in a stand up argument disagreement (where all are giving as good as they get), mine go almost as soon as I type them

it's a conspiracy, I tells ye

No conspiracy AF, if folks are reporting you but you aren't reporting them, then we are more likely to delete you and not them on the grounds that we won't see their posts unless they are on the same thread or your post is a direct response to them.

We get over 30,000 post per day, we cannot read them all - please report stuff against you and we will take a look.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 29/05/2012 16:10

I'd like to advance report all the people who have, and I assume will continue to tell me I am a terrible parent for going to work when my dd was 4 months old, as clearly I had a choice and should have sold my body in the street as opposed to putting her in a nursery.

so, the way i'm reading the guidelines now is thus; if MNers want a debate in the vain hope of changing a racist/sexist/disablist/any other offensive/disagreeable viewpoint the way to draw attention to the error of that particular poster's way is to report it to MNHQ and they will delete it..like some sort of internet carpet where all the crap is swept under?

SuePBlovesaDiamondJubilee · 29/05/2012 16:11

Indeed she is never far away Grin. I don't think you need to yell, if you want DP.

I agree with Shirl's Fair Game point, cos that's how it feels . Which is maybe why so many prolifics are laying low or not bothering any more, I guess.

ShirleyKnot · 29/05/2012 16:11

Oh YES Rhubarb, excellent point re: Daftpunk. (Although not the bit about her coming back)

I can adhere to the guidelines, I mostly do, but all the while that MN are allowing people who are goading the holy shit out of people while telling regulars to "play nice" I'm afraid that I might slip now and again - although I have learned quite a bit from some of the old MRA trolls as to how to be an absolutely objectionable piece of shit but just skirt up to the deletion line...

nice.

I seemed to have got left off!

AnyFucker · 29/05/2012 16:13

but I don't wanna report stuff, Rebecca

I want the tool's post to stand and I want mine to stand

Hullygully · 29/05/2012 16:13

I appreciate you get 30k posts per daya nd need another 50 staff, but you have to do something about the policy of deleting reported threads WITHOUT CONTEXT as it is this that is obviously causing the trouble.

OP posts:
TheRhubarb · 29/05/2012 16:13

Really AF? Then surely she shouldn't be hard to spot, just search for all the deleted posts! Grin

UnChartered · 29/05/2012 16:14

apols if it was me what done it cardamom

The talk boards feel heavily moderated atm

AnyFucker · 29/05/2012 16:16

precisely, rhubs

but it won't be her posts that are deleted, it will be the ones challenging her or saying "did you used to have a candlewick bedspread be a poster called DaftPunk

that is my whooooole point

Hullygully · 29/05/2012 16:17

Or it will go like this:

I'm not racist but I have noticed a distinct whiff off blacks.
Message deleted by Mumsnet
Message deleted by Mumsnet
Please may I explain that my message was deleted as I pointed out that that could technically be construed as racist
Message deleted by Mumsnet
I think it's because they sweat more
Message deleted by Mumsnet
Please may I explain that my message was deleted as I pointed out that that could technically be construed as racist

That's going to be interesting, isn't it?

OP posts:
TheRhubarb · 29/05/2012 16:17

30,000 reported posts is a lot. I wonder if your system reveals how many reports each poster is making? Because surely it would be in your best interests to single out those posters who are just reporting posts and prevent them from doing so?

I also appreciate that you will no longer have the time to make a full assessment of that post in context so it can often be easier to just delete than to trail through a thread of insults to figure out if the reported one should be allowed to stand.

Perhaps you need more moderators?

ThisWeekonFancyPuffin · 29/05/2012 16:18

It used to be that we were treated like adults who could deal with most things ourselves. It worked, btw, for the last 10 years.

Now it's like we are morons naughty children, who need to be patronisingly pointed to the talk guidelines every five minutes.

ThisWeekonFancyPuffin · 29/05/2012 16:20

I think what MNHQ are saying by repeating the 30,000 post a day point, is that, if something is reported they automatically delete it without reading it looking at context.

RebeccaMumsnet · 29/05/2012 16:20

@AnyFucker

but I don't wanna report stuff, Rebecca

I want the tool's post to stand and I want mine to stand

So you want a site that doesn't delete anything ? Mumsnet has always removed posts that break our guidelines if reported, that hasn't changed since the dawn of time beginning of Mumsnet.

TheRhubarb · 29/05/2012 16:20

DaftPunk, to be fair, gave as good as she got and would probably never report a post against her. But I do remember she came out with some corkers on racism and homophobia which must have excelled the 'report post' count but they were not deleted on the grounds that she had the right to express her opinion no matter how offensive that might be to us.

In fact, didn't Justine get involved with that one at one point? And defended DaftPunk's right to assert herself (but without defending DaftPunk herself?)

Well we are asking for the same rights.

RebeccaMumsnet · 29/05/2012 16:24

@ThisWeekonFancyPuffin

I think what MNHQ are saying by repeating the 30,000 post a day point, is that, if something is reported they automatically delete it without reading it looking at context.

No, not at all.
We read all reports and make a judgement call on each one. Sometimes we get it wrong, sometimes our judgement differs from others but we try our best to be consistent and to answer questions when they arise.

We do reinstate posts from time to time when we have been a bit fat fingered about deletions.

Fiderer · 29/05/2012 16:24

AF: "I want the tool's post to stand and I want mine to stand"

Yep. Me too. I'd rather shite troll posts on Bereavement and similar were deleted as they cause so much unnecessary pain.

As for the rest, why can't we argue and how can we when so many posts are deleted?

AnyFucker · 29/05/2012 16:25

Rebeca, fair enough, but have you read any of the "Classics" threads recently from a couple of years ago ?

you will notice a big difference in what was allowed to stand then, as opposed to now

TantrumsAndBalloons · 29/05/2012 16:27

So if X says something that I think is stupid and I post something like i think you are acting like a twat x will report and it will be deleted but xs post will still be there.

So just imagine, before i am deleted, y reads what I posted, disagrees and tells me I am a twat.

I don't like that so report it.

But before it's deleted z reads these messages, and posts i agree with tantrums, you x are a twat

X doesn't like this either and reports.
Z is deleted.
Do you see what I mean, if everyone reports every teeny tiny thing abd it's actually deleted then all we will have is the ops twattish comment and then an entire page of deletions?!?!

WTAF?

UnChartered · 29/05/2012 16:29

that's the way i get it now too, Tantrums

SecretNutellaFix · 29/05/2012 16:29

Rebecca, with all due respect, I think that there is a trigger happy deleter at HQ and you are not prepared to admit this.

You say that you get 30,000 posts a day. Great!
How many get reported?
How often do you not read the whole of the damn thread, before deleting the whole thing? If the issue is time, why is it that posts stating that someone is lying/ being racist get deleted faster than the original comment? Surely you should be looking at the reasons why that post was made in the first place?

At the moment HQ are the parents. Many of us more established posters would be the elder sibling. The newer people, who are perhaps the more frequent complainers, are the six year old brat who is always whinging to mum and dad that their older sister is being mean to them, when they are just trying to keep them out of trouble. Parents believe brat without investigating first, elder sibling ends up grounded and resentful about Parents and siblings. Parents discover later what actually happened and maybe try a half hearted apology, but by then the damage is done and trust is broken. Older sibling rebels, leading to massive disharmony.

That isn't a recipe for success in parenting. I don't see it being a success for the site. Do you?
