Will MNHQ consider installing a 'Hide Poster' function?

This has been raised a couple of times, just wondering if MNHQ had any plans to make this an option.

Would be nice to hide the couple of Mners who genuinely get me riled up.

Grin I'd be paranoid Grin I already bloody hate those stupid 'I hate an MNer but I'm not going to tell you who, but I will hint, here's the hints' threads, with everyone going oh yes, I know who you mean, I hate them too. Oh I don't know, pm me...

Always think it's me.

A Hide Poster function would finish me off Grin [sad bastard emoticon]

BrikSchittHaus · 02/01/2012 22:36

because posters would be able to hide you without you knowing. it just seems really snidey and nasty imo

But surely, we do that with the numpties anyway? I certainly don't waste my energy challenging the nonsense, however I would prefer not to be subjected to it.

90% of this site is amazing, fun and so supportive, tis the 10% I would want to filter.

I think it would be especially useful on the quite painful and personal support threads where you get apologists for rape or abuse, and they just destroy the poster who is asking for help. Or dickhead misogynists derailing the feminism threads, that way the individual has the right to read or ignore.

ps yep am partial to a bit of fforde, the man is very witty. Took me ages to cotton on to Braxton Hicks! Smile

scottishmummy · 02/01/2012 22:36

well it's hypothetical given mnhq saying no

Get0rf · 02/01/2012 22:36

I hate the thought of off-site calling to arms and all that shite.

I have no idea re narnia gate, thank christ.

NB anyone being a real gobshite ought to be reported anyhoo

Sevenfold · 02/01/2012 22:38

I think it is a bad idea, I have one poster who imo talks utter shit, but I like to read it to remind me that I must be a good person compared to them.
if I hid her, I wouldn't get the chance.
I justw ish mn hq would deal quicker with the haters.

scottishmummy · 02/01/2012 22:40

I was on feminism section and someone put a call out for her pal to sort me.all o I wish soandso was here to tell you how it is.....tada! big gob pal turned up 15min later to pile in.most amusing

the eyre affair is one of my favourite books of all time, have you visited his site? bonkers!!

back to the matter, ime, some twat comes onto a thread being deliberatly offensive, they get called on it. they are told they are being a twat and argued with. imagine if said twat was hidden by all the sensible, nice posters? imagine if, for example, DP was hidden by every poster who argued and told her that her posts were unacceptable. she would probably still be here, spouting the same shite.

Get0rf · 02/01/2012 22:41

I love the word gobshite. Can only say it mentally with a Jim Royle accent.

ps, v sorry for typos, bloody painkillers making fingers clumsy.

Hullygully · 02/01/2012 22:42

I need more information.

Like exactly who you want to hide, Gerrof.

MaryZed · 02/01/2012 22:42

It's funny, GetOrf, I would probably have been in favour of this a couple of years ago.

Then I was on two threads in quick succession where I realised that the person being particularly nasty was someone I would have hidden (and therefore not seen, contradicted and reported). Which bothered me a bit. Because the op was new, and would have been very upset if everyone had let her posts stand.

I do think quicker deletions of known trouble makers would be useful though

Get0rf · 02/01/2012 22:42

Good point re DP.

Mind you it's all a moo point now.

gobshite is indeed a great word, as is plonker.

wannaBe · 02/01/2012 22:44

I am on another site where this function exists and I speak from experience when I say that it doesn't work and that it leads to threads becoming disjointed.

Also, I think there's a real danger of offensive posts being left to stand as mn hq can just say "well if you don't like it just hide the poster" instead of deleting.

Hullygully · 02/01/2012 22:45

Do their names begin with a T and an F?

Or an R?

Or is it H?

Get0rf · 02/01/2012 22:46

Hmm, yes

MaryZed · 02/01/2012 22:46

We can't use plonker in this house Sad. Apparently (according to my teenagers) it is very rude (worse than dick, apparently on a par with cunt, and twat in the hierarchy of offensive words).

LoremIpsum · 02/01/2012 22:47

The gobshites who said they were going to actively disrupt the feminism board and drive users away were reported. It didn't seem to help.

I think a hide poster button is more in the spirit of self moderation, which is the thing that makes MN so good. Instead of reporting and calling in admin, you just choose to ignore.

Lissielou, if the rallying behaviour already happens I don't see an ignore poster function making it worse. MN is so big it would be very difficult o send someone to Coventry, much easier to bully by attacking. The ignore feature doesn't seem to be used that way elsewhere, and rallying etc happens everywhere, so not sure why it would be here.

Get0rf · 02/01/2012 22:47

Plonker is rude? Christ.

I said that a TV show was complete gash the other day, dd looked at me in horror. Apparently that is really, really rude.
