Will MNHQ consider installing a 'Hide Poster' function?

This has been raised a couple of times, just wondering if MNHQ had any plans to make this an option.

Would be nice to hide the couple of Mners who genuinely get me riled up.

Yes, please.

yellowraincoat · 02/01/2012 20:01

Oh me too. It's not the ones I disagree with, it's the ones that I disagree with who are also unutterably unable to have a discussion with passive aggressive BS.

ShowOfHands · 02/01/2012 20:01

No thanks. Just virtually flay them or ignore them. Practise taking the high road. I just don't know how it could work. It would cause a lot of ill feeling.

Kayzr · 02/01/2012 20:03

What if you want to read a thread that the poster you've hidden has posted on?

Would it be strange to read replies to a post you can't see?

Chubfuddler · 02/01/2012 20:03

We've been through why this wouldn't work - you'd have holes in your threads. Surely no one can wind you up that much?

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 02/01/2012 20:04

Don't let the idiots get to you.

yellowraincoat · 02/01/2012 20:05

But if you're fine with holes in your thread, what would the problem be? I'm fine with holes.

Tee2072 · 02/01/2012 20:06

Honestly, it works elsewhere. Delphifors allows you to hide individuals and it works fine.

ShowOfHands · 02/01/2012 20:07

OP: banal question
Respondee 1: Answer
Respondee 2 Identical answer
OP: Thanks respondee 2

Respondee 1 assumes s/he's been hidden, gets upset and kicks a puppy.

Will nobody think of the puppies?

Though if you're a puppy kicker, you deserve to be hidden.

I truly think it's up to us to know how to respond to people with all sorts of opinions. You challenge or you back away and ignore. Just as in rl. You start hiding people and you're hiding away from what is just difference. Even the really awful, vampiric trolls. I'd rather know where they are and what they're saying.

Get0rf · 02/01/2012 20:07

I would rather not see the nonsense.

They are the posters who generally do not engage in conversation anyway, so I cannot imagine there would be much of a gap.

It doesn't really matter - nobody winds me up that much - but others have asked for it many times and it would be rather nice to have.

Most sites I've used have this function, seems to work. It's quite a good deterrent to the weirdy deliberate disruption that seems to happen periodically.

yellowraincoat · 02/01/2012 20:10

That's ok, ShowofHands, I've dealt with enough horrible people in my life up til now. I don't really feel the need to deal with any more.

Get0rf · 02/01/2012 20:10

I am not on any other forums so didn't know that it is a normal fucntion on most sites.

OP posts:
AtYourCervix · 02/01/2012 20:11

would that be hiding threads started by that bad bad poster or just comments? can't see how it would work and it would make converstations ever so disjointed.

Tee2072 · 02/01/2012 20:16

It really doesn't make things disjointed, especially on a non threaded board like MN.

And, show that already happens.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 02/01/2012 20:19

I like an idea that came up on another thread about this about blacking them out (in a way you can to highlight the OP or yourself in a thread), so you could see that they had posted, and you could highlight the content of the post so you could see it, but could easily skim over it and ignore them if you don't.

Shouldn't be to complicated to implement either.

Get0rf · 02/01/2012 20:24

We can hide threads and whole topics, so think hiding indiviuals would be a natural progression.

OP posts:
Get0rf · 02/01/2012 20:25

Lots of poeple who have hidden AIBU say that their MN experience is a lot better now. I think the same could be said if people were able to hide the dunderheads.

I sort of do this mentally already though.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 02/01/2012 20:29

It does seem like a good idea - i read whole threads without really noticing posters names, and it's only when I've read a certain type of comment that I go back and realise that it's this or that person.

CrackerHatsandStetsonsAreCool · 02/01/2012 20:30

There are already holes in threads when MNHQ deletes posts on request. It will just cut out the reporting bit to get that taken away. There are times when I see 'message deleted by mn' and it's obvious to see why when you see who posted the message.

dearprudence · 02/01/2012 20:31

I don't see why it shouldn't be implemented. I wouldn't use it myself, because I want to know what the irritants are saying, but it makes no odds to me if other people are using it.

If they get disjointed threads, that's their look-out.

AnyFuleKno · 02/01/2012 20:35

If you hide a poster, it should block you from seeing any threads where they are the OP, and block them from seeing any where you are the OP.
